Well, I promised to raise my kids as Catholics, which means to instruct them in the faith. Ultimately, they will decide to accept it or not as they become adults.
So, since every child is different, you as the parent need to decide what is most likely to work with your child to help them truly understand the faith. Some will harden their hearts and become more stubborn at perceived pressure, some will be grateful for more information and effort from you. Your call to make.
Your daughter has asked some legitimate questions. She needs to get the- sorry it just works- Catholic Answers. It is hard to understand why there is so much evil, pain, and suffering in this world with our Loving God. I would advise getting her some good Catholic books on the subject, St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, etc.
Christ suffered on the cross, how could God expect that of his own Son? Becuase it was the way provide the gift of salvation to all mankind. Why did that have to involve pain? I don’t know. But Christ’s Love for us is not demonstrated by His Glory, it is apparent to us in the sacrifices He was willing to make for us. The pain He was willing to endure is a greater testimony to His love for mankind than His words or His transfiguration.
A lot of suffering and evil are the choices of men. A consquence of God creating beings with free will vice biological robots with no choice in the matter, just programmed to act in a certain way.
For the 12 year old man of science. Catholicism and Science both explain the existence of the universe in the same way-- it sprang into being in an instant. Nothing became something.
A good book for him to read would be Dinesh D’souzas “Life After Death”. It points to some of the things science has posited and even accepted on faith, not direct evidence. Multiple universes and dark matter for example.
