Have you considered speaking to a Catholic priest about your situation? You might benefit from spiritual direction. You can talk to a priest, Brother, Sister, or Deacon about religious life. Discerning is difficult enough, and it’s hard to do it alone. Sure, this forum could help you, but it would be even better to find someone who you can talk to personally. No, I’m from the Philippines. I’ve emailed them before, last year. Just asking for help because I don’t know how to discern properly. I don’t even know the word “discern” and many other things regarding religious life. I don’t know who I am going to talk to so my last resort (which took all of my courage) is to just email them.
Then I found this forum, and is such a blessing to be here.![]()
I’ll look up orders in the Philippines, if you would like, but I think you need to figure out the different spiritualities in the Church, and where you fit in. These are some really important questions to ask yourself, when you feel it’s time:
-What spirituality am I drawn to? (Carmelite, Benedictine, Dominican, etc.)
-Am I drawn to the cloister, or to a balance of active and contemplative life?
-Am I called in my country, or is God gently tugging at my heart to look at an order out of the country?
-Am I called to be a missionary?
-What do I feel called to devote my life to? Just prayer? Or perhaps, healthcare, teaching, parish work, evangelization, etc?
If you have a little trouble discerning (which means searching or thinking about) between the spiritualities, there are some books that you could read about the different kinds. Also, if you are not sure about what you should do, it might benefit you to take a Myers-Briggs Personality Test. I took one when I started college, and I was amazed with the results.
