Im struggling to understand the need for a ‘go fund me’ campaign in the first place.

The article says ’ A crowdfunding page was set up on Monday to cover getting him into a new school and living expenses, and raised more than $2,000’.

Getting into a new school wouldn’t cost anything. He also lives at home with his mother, so his ‘living expenses’ are exactly the same as they were whilst he was attending school.

I believe the money was to help pay for a private, maybe religious school setting.

So maybe it is for a private education, homeschooling, tutors and then possible starting college as he seemed concerned he would not get a recommendation? I wonder if the school he was kicked out was a religious one, article does not say but it seems they have adopted a new gender series?

Still not making much sense as a plan.

The boy himself said he was ‘‘concerned that being barred from his old school could affect him getting into another one, particularly if a prospective new school requires a previous academic reference’’

Private schools have far more stringent selection criteria than local state schools - firstly, he would need to display some higher level of academic skill to even begin their consideration. Secondly, why would the school want to invite a pupil who does not follow behavioural codes of conduct? Coupled with the fact none of the 6 private schools in his area are religious, he is extremely unlikely to have them overlook those two hurdles.

A religious state school is a more likely option, but has zero cost involved. He cant very well bribe himself into a place.

I don’t know about bribing himself into a school. Usually GOFundMe have a set amount they want to attain and sometimes it go above. They were at $2000 so unsure what they had hope to get.

Does not seem unreasonable to me if he gets some money. The catholic schools may be required by the state to put forth the same agenda. Possible he felt better trying to an education else where, private tutors and and onto college, trying to go with his life. Maybe the family wants to move.

That is my feeling also. Maybe the money would help him apply for a visa to study in the US.

I noticed that the Youtuber the boy gave a phone interview to and who set up the ‘go fund me’ account is American, and I wonder if that is causing the use of the word ‘collage’ to get lost in translation.

The youtuber’s quote was that the fund was partly set up to provide ‘tuition for collage’.

In the UK, the word ‘collage’ is used to describe part of the secondary school system that caters for pupils aged 16-18. This is entirely free of charge all over the UK, unless your particular school is a private school’.

In the US, ‘collage’ is used to refer to what the UK calls university. Scotland (unlike other parts of the UK) also provides university entirely free of charge.

My understanding is that he was kicked out for expressing his view that there are only 2 genders. Was he kicked out before this incident for posting about teachers?

From the “Fundly”:

Hi everyone, I’ve set up this page to help Murray get a headstart on life and achieve his goals and dreams. I’m happy to report he has found a college to attend but he will be needing help with transportation costs and other miscellaneous expenses. You can read more about the ongoing saga here: Thanks A Lot, You Guys to everyone that has been so supportive, I will upload a new video later tonight when I am able to, giving all the latest updates.

From the boy’s own telling of the story:

Murray said that, after the exchange went viral, his mum called to say the school had been in contact and “they were not happy”.

''During a meeting with Murray and his mum he said the school “emphasised that I wasn’t getting into trouble for what I said but for recording a teacher, which is fair enough because its a known rule not to record your teacher.”

He said they suspended him for one week and told him he would have “strict rules on his phone use” from that point on.’

He himself admits he broke a ‘known’ rule.

And that has to do with his expulsion or the fact that his page was shut down, how? Talk about an irrelevant detail.

So initially he got one week suspension for his posting, fair enough, but then that was not enough so they bounced him out before he was finished.

How was he going to share what the teacher said in class to him about gender if he did not initially post it on media?

According to the boy, the suspension was increased to an expulsion once it had been taken ‘higher up the school’. Possibly the Head of 6th/his year group tutor issued the initial suspension and then this was later scaled up by the Head Teacher - but without any further details, that is just my assumption rather than a known fact. He is past the age of compulsory schooling, so his attendance at the school was at the discretion of both parties, they are not obligated in any way to allow him to finish if he breaks conduct rules.

There are ways of sharing the exchange without posting on social media. He could have spoken to the Head Teacher directly about his concerns/the teachers conduct, invited a discussion about the exchange on social media without the video. How else were issues publicised before everyone had a smart phone to record everything?

This all sounds very nice but if the policy of the school is that there are many genders and that is how it is to be taught, one cannot go against it in any form. Time for him to move on to college.

On a much sober note…
The priest scandal in Boston broke because of news media articles. Talking to the hierarchy did not help.

I want to start a GoFundMe and hopefully it’ll be successful too. Don’t worry I’ll be ethical about it.

Its not the policy of the school per say, it is a value that has been embedded into the Scottish schooling system. The new collage he is attending will have to abide by the same values of inclusivity. I believe the only ones exempt from such a national curriculum would be private schools.
