I hope other teens and adults could say what they think about a 14 year old girl hanging at myspace.com. I have tons of friends who do it but my mom says its a sin cuz its evil and theres sexy pictures and girls wearing skimpy underwear and kissing each other and stuff. I told her they are just joking around when they do that stuff but she doesnt care. Is it really a sin if I just go there and look and chat with friends and not any of the other stuff?

Help!

 Aly!

Going to myspace to chat with friends is perfectly fine. Just be very very careful. I have a myspace. Most of my friends on there are family members or friends from school. I don’t have any slutty pics on my profile. Just ignore the slutty stuff. You’lll be fine as long as you keep your profile clean and you are really careful about who you talk to.

Dear Aly,
It could be dangerous. People have been stalked, etc from Myspace.
If your mother says not to go there, I recommend that you not do it. She has your safety at heart; she is probably the person who loves and understands you more than anyone in the world, so it’s a good idea to listen to her.
God bless.

Im totally sure that there is nothing wrong with it and I am always super careful. My mom wont listen though and keeps saying there is some place like myspace.com for “good” teens but nobody i know knows it.

I use facebook…only your friends (whom you approve) can look at your profile…much safer in my opinion

I’m mother of a very level-headed 15 yo daughter. I trust her entirely. I do not trust a few of her friends. She is on myspace under the condition that it’s set to private and I am included as one of her friends so her dad and I can look at it sometimes. We will NEVER post ANYTHING (comments etc.) in her space but we have insisted on the right to look at it from time to time. We will also NEVER respond to a request from one of her friends to be one of their friends (unless we ask her first). She claims that I’m being unfair but since it’s the only way she’ll be able to have a myspace is with me as a friend, that’s the way it is.

Teens out there, am I being fair to her?

My Space is not evil but some of the folks on there are evil.

Going there to look and chat with friends is not, in and of itself a sin, for me, HOWEVER, for YOU, who would be going against your mom’s wishes it could be a sin of disobedience. What do you think?

Try a safer place that your mom approves of.

Not ONE person on these boards cares about you as much as your mother does, cherish her because she won’t live forever and the two of you can have some of the best times of your lives right now.

I have an account there, but I’m 29 years old. If I had kids, they would be allowed MySpace accounts at the age of 18.

I use myspace strictly to keep in touch with friends that I have in the “real world” (old classmates, coworkers, and so on), but I’m past the age where my parents have authority to restrict my internet access, and I’m also at a point in my life where I don’t see my friends every day at school anymore, like I did in high school.

So here’s what: Do what your mom says. Even if you think she’s crazy and she doesn’t understand you.

Why? She is clearly trying to take care of you, and like someone else said earlier, no other human being on this earth is going to care as much about protecting you as your mother. Since you really can live without myspace (really, it’s true! Try it for awhile!), find other ways to chat with your friends for the next four years, till you turn 18 and move out. Then when you are living on your own as an adult, you can use your own judgement about myspace.

I would be careful and just make sure you don’t have anyone on your friend’s list that you don’t personally know and also never give out your information. In fact, if I were in high school and a girl, I would not post my school. However, I think myspace is great for the good things it has to offer such as keeping in contact with people. I do get tired of being bombarded with all the porn advertizements and the see my webcam naked pictures pages. Or the funniest is the oh I ready your profile and I think you mighty like my site or something. Well, I state that I am a practicing Catholic on my profile and stuff so I laugh when I see that.

Hi, Aly, welcome to the Forums!

As a parent I am very leery of MySpace. I had to take away my son’s online privileges because he fell in with bad influences on AOL Chat and Windows Messanger.

You’ve heard the expression “Trust, but verify”? Suggest to your mother that she could install a keylogger that would let her see where you go online and what you’re typing.

I know this probably sounds like a horrible idea to you but it could reassure your mom – and keep you honest when you’re tempted to check out something she wouldn’t like.

MySpace is fun and since it is the most popular it can be hard not to go there.

Just be careful as there are a bunch of weirdos who go to MySpace just because it is public. I would keep your page clean and just invite friends. There are some other people on these forums who use MySpace.

Now if your mom doesn’t want you to do it, you shouldn’t do it or just show her your page so that she will let you. If you have nothing to be ashamed of on your page then show it to her, and let her glance at it once in a while if she goes along with it.

It is not a sin to just go there and chat, but it is a sin to disobey your parents, as we are to honor them. So just let her know and tell her you don’t want to disobey her.

God Bless

I couldn’t agree more. Obedience is much more pleasing to God. Even Jesus Himself had to obey His Mother Virgin Mary and Father David when He was young - that is an obvious example for us all.

Myspace and other alike services are just an invisible traps - The father you stay away from it, the better you will be. I guess it is hard for many young people (even adults) to see this until when they have kids of their own and are worried about their kids being online.

Aly,

As an older sister of many teen siblings, I would first say what a few posters have said - obey your mom :). She has your best interests at heart, and honestly, her concern is well-founded. You don’t want to ruin a relationship with your mom over something that is not necessary for you to grow up normally and live. If you’re looking at myspace when she has told you not to, it is a sin because of disobedience. Believe it or not, parents are wiser than we will ever think as teens. If I had listened to my mom many, many times throughout my teenage years, instead of considering her ignorant, it would have saved my soul from a whole lot of sin, and it would have kept me from making even worse decisions in my life down the road. I’ve tried to get my younger siblings to understand this, because, looking back, I can see all the times she was right and even if she wasn’t, it wouldn’t have hurt me in the least to just obey. My mom doesn’t let any of my teen siblings to have a myspace. When you’re out on your own, you can then do what you want.🙂

Also, myspace is not bad in and of itself, but it does have a lot of bad content on it. Having pictures of girls wearing skimpy clothing and kissing eachother is not good. These girls may just be joking around, but it doesn’t make it any less dirty. How many of these girls are leading teen guys (and others) to lust? And if these guys are lusting and possibly sinning in other areas, they could have a tendency to objectify girls - make them feel like a piece of meat, instead of treating them with the upmost respect. When you come to the time where you are dating, especially when you’re at the age of marrying, you’ll find that good men are not always so easy to find. Why? Because they’ve been caught up in what society says is “cool” such as immodest pictures of girls. They haven’t been taught or lived chaste lives and then they treat you like you’re not worth anything. You can do your part, by not looking at these things, and if you are friends with girls who do this, to lead by example and possibly talk to them about dressing modestly. Would you rather be called “beautiful” and have a guy look you in the eyes when he’s saying it, or called “hot” and staring at your chest as if you’re not a real person? Those kinds of pictures are going to get the “you’re so hot” where as the girls who dress modestly are going to have a guy who respects her and loves her, who thinks she’s beautiful and not just because she is on the outside. The guy who respects a girl is going to want to walk to the ends of the earth and back for her, whereas the guy who just likes a girl’s body is going to take what he can get from her and then leave.

I’ve been on both sides of the tracks, and am now married to a man who loves the fact that I dress modestly. He tells me every day that I am beautiful and how much he loves me more each day. He showers me with compliments and makes me dinner when I’m tired, or massages my swollen feet (because I’m pregnant). He watches chick flicks with me and plays board games and would rather spend time doing those things than the things he loves (computer games and action movies) because he’s spending time with me.

So, basically, what I’m saying is that, while myspace is not bad, it does promote many bad things that lead to even greater bad things, which you may not see right now. Believe me, it’s worth it to spend your time elsewhere :). Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. U are super cool. I just got a new computer (MY OWN!) for christmas which is why I can ask questions and it is TOTALLY COOL. My biggest thing is that my mom doesn’t let me do ANYTHING. After my dad died she like got totally wierd and is like always freakin out about me and my friends and sex. She told me i cant go to myspace.com cant wear skimpy underwear that NOBODY except me EVEN SEES and then threw away a bunch of thongs that i bought. She said THAT is why I cant go to myspsace!!! I dont get it. I’m 14!!! If Im not doing anything wrong why cant I live like everybody else? I know i should obey her but she has gottin so wierd that it is REALLY hard to obey and LIVE my life.

Ugh!

😦 Aly!

I’ve got a myspace and I enjoy keeping in contact with friends, etc. I’m a bit older though - 26. There is quite a bit of immodest stuff on there though and it can be a real struggle to stay away from it or avoid seeing it inadvertantly.

Since your mom has told you not to be on there, I would recommend not being on there. It never turns out for the better when one disobeys their parents.

this is one of the places my mom said i should go. i tried like twice and its just boring and none of my friends r there so its like chatting with people i dont even know at all. r there better ones?

Aly,
I’ve read a thread about you wanting to masturbate and I’m thinking your mom has a reason to want to be protective of you. You’re curious, I’m assuming, about all kinds of things. If your mom is telling you not to do something, listen to her. She knows you better than we do here. I think you’re asking us to tell you it’s ok when there’s more to your story than what you’re telling us.
Just my :twocents: . Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, Aly. I will pray for you that you find direction in life.

I guess it would be super cool if somebody else was tellin me that Im right and my mom is wrong and i guess I just think that Im a pretty normal girl who cant do ANYTHING since my dad died!!. I mean Ive had a myspace for like a year and dont have any dirty stuff on it or even links to friends. I just go there to chat with my friends. The masterbating thing is like something totaly different and freaks me out cuz tons of people says its wrong but cant say why. I mean i know my friends do it sometimes. I know boys do it all the time. I know lotsa other people do it and i just dont see how it can hurt me or anybody else. THIS my mom definitely does NOT know about!! I would die and she would kill me.

 LOL -Aly!

I don’t know of any specifically Christian places like this. But, this could be a good opportunity to make some new friends. I found myspace really boring the first several times I was on it because I didn’t know anyone and didn’t know how to find anyone. So I just started talking to people and then it got fun.
