Science doesn’t recognise an intangible entity which has free will, the power of abstract reasoning, beliefs, emotions, values, ideals, principles, goals, rights and obligations.
Science is based on at least two
metaphysical assumptions: the validity of reason and the intelligibility of the universe. Science does not and cannot explain itself. Philosophy is a systematic approach to study not only science but other aspects of reality.
If they are only concepts which don’t exist objectively they can be ignored with impunity. We cannot ignore them. They are simply different types of subjective experience which we are very dependent on them. Why we can ignore them if they are not objective?
The existence of sceptics, cynics, nihilists and criminals prove that we can - and many people do - ignore beliefs, emotions, values, ideals, principles, goals, rights and obligations with impunity. In other words they “get away with it”.
Materialism does not and cannot explain itself because it is a theory produced by the mind. The main alternative to materialism is dualism which recognises the reality of both mind and matter but other theories are idealism and solipsism.
Dualism has it is own problems: (1) Interaction problem, (2) it doesn’t explain what mind is, (3) it doesn’t explain what the attributes of mind are? etc.
Every theory of reality has its problems but materialism is self-destructive because it claims to explain itself whereas dualism does not fall into that trap. It is presumptuous to believe we can explain everything including our own power to explain everything!
Solipsism is not a serious system of thought in my opinion.
Idealism also does not explain what mind really is hence it cannot explain what the attributes of mind are too…
I agree with you.
