I agree arguing is bad. Our life though is just a stepping stone to the after life. Do you feel a duty to evangelize others to insure they get to heaven. I am not stating Protestants don’t get to heaven. Any religion has some people that do not try to live a righteous life. Isn’t it better to try and teach them then get along and let them perhaps go to Hell?
Yes, I do feel a duty to evangelize to others. However, I feel that not all methods of ‘evangelizing’ are good one’s and in actual fact, discredit our faith. I am a big believer in evangelizing by living out my faith. That’s why I mentioned Taize as people live out their respective faiths there. If people aren’t moved by that, they will not be moved by clever arguement or debate. If you are good at argueing or debating, you may get your point over but it can have the adverse effect of making others resentful, even if your right, and therefore they will not accept what you say. Mother Theresa is one of many who I believe moved others by living her faith.
I do believe in teaching others however, they have to want to be taught. If they have no desire to be taught, there’s not a lot we as humans can do other than pray for God to create that desire. It is ultimately God who draws people and the only true conversion is one that is Spirit inspired. We do not have the power ourselves ‘save’ people from hell, it is God who does that. What we where called to do is state what we believe, if we are asked to, and live our faith which is greater than giving people a different set of ‘rules’ or religious tenet to live by. I’ve reached the point now where if people want to argue with me I simply say, ‘that is what I believe’ and won’t engage any further. Yes, I will state why I believe it if asked, however if what I say is rejected, I walk away. I heard a very good Priest describe this way of evangelizing in a nice way. He said that when you say something to someone, you place your words between that person and yourself, then leave them to decide whether or not they want to pick it up if that makes sense.
