Well I tell you I do not come to waist time. I could do that playing a video game. I came to learn more about Catholics. I do this being a LCMS member. Though I was baptised a RC. I was removed from the church at a young age and then raised non denom. I don’t know If I am taking the long way back to being a RC or even if I will get there, but I do know I want to learn more and discuss why are positions are different at this point.

I can teach you more about the Catholic faith - what is your question? Is it about the differences? About final authority? - cuz that is the main difference, that will forever separate Catholics from Protestants. Care to learn more? Send me a message! 👍

Lets start with some of the differences. I have read the RC catechism so I am familliar some what. Can we start with papal infalibility?👍

What would you like to know?

Is the pope infallible? Certainly not. Only God is. 👍

But as Catholics we are to believe that when he speaks “from the chair of St. Peter” that his declarations are prophetic - that is infallible. This is what the Catholic Church teaches.

Now it would be unfair for me to give you only one side of the debate. But for the Protestant perspective I suggest that you read - James White and Eric Svendsen. They are the popular Protestant apologists - and should be considered. This way we can let the Protestants speak for themselves. I sure hate it when Catholics are not allowed to speak for ourselves - so I have enough respect to point people to the horses mouth when it comes to Protestant teaching on certain subjects. 😉

Here is a good website as well - so you can do some first-hand research (which is always the most accurate).

It should come as no surprise when you start a thread entitled "tell me I’m wrong, but …and then insult an entire class of people. Look at the threads: they are composed of those who attack Roman Catholicism, but mostly they are threads started by Catholics asking non-Catholics insulting questions.

I came here because I was assured I could discuss doctrine here, in an interfaith setting. Instead all I find is argument over whose faith is correct and whose is not. Nothing interfaith about that and it solves nothing.

Then the answers are mostly worse. “They” want answers, “they want” this or that. I’m not some alien. I am a Christian, an Episcopalian, and part of a catholic church. I didn’t come here to learn about Catholicism, I was one for 30 years, I’ve been an Anglican for 20. I don’t come to convert anyone. I come to discuss mutual areas of interest and places where we can work together. Apparently that’s not really possible, because all I see is “We wrote the bible, and We are the True church.” This stuff, even if believed does zero to either enhance one’s position or to foster dialog.
you have no patience, it seems… you came here wanting this and wanting that… Now you come across like you cannot accept things here on the forums as they are… you want things to change to better suit you. Well… all of us want things to improve on the forums (like rude-ness…)… but you seem particularly impatient and lacking in real concern…

Which doesn’t surprise me… You got impatient with the true Church… and left…

Once a person has done that… well… no wonder you seem to be lacking in Christian charity… and/or patience or whatever… (at least here on the forums…)…

Is there any doctrin biblical or traditional that states this. In the Tratise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope. “We will show from the Gospel that the Roman bishop is not above other bishops and pastors by divine right.” Philip Melanchthon, Tr7. Luke 22:24-27 Christ bans lordship among apostles. John 20:21 Christ sends forthe disciples in equality without distinction. Galations 2:7-10 St. Paul aferms that he was neither ordained nor confirmed by Peter. I will not go as far as calling the pope the antichrist. As that is not how I feel about it. Let me know what you think.

If man is never infallible…

i guess we can throw out St. Paul, St. Matthew and St. Luke and St. John then…

In fact, while we’re at it, why don’ we just throw out Christianity altogether…

Life would be a lot easier then, don’t you think???

Welcome to the world of religion! :rotfl:

Mankind has been fighting over religion from the dawn of time and probably always will, until Christ comes back that is. It’s funny how people seem to be able to discuss just about any topic reasonably and rationally except religion and politics. Senisitive areas!

Like yourself, I used to believe that through dialogue we could all come to an understanding I got a rude awakening. Incidently, I live in Northern Ireland! I think the Taize community has it right. They all just get on with practicing their respective faiths, no one tries to convert anyone else, they don’t discuss anything, but come together for morning and evening prayer.
I think your right, they are very touchy here, I am not sure catholics want any truth

truth be told, most humans don’t…

but Catholics face it regardless… not like we have a choice… in the end…

you mean you actually put your trust in mere humans?? Hmmm… not good…

dont know who Taize is… but without discussion, even arguments… nothing really gets accomplished…

You want a perfect world where people don’t argue??

do everything Jesus says and then die…

No it’s not good. I believe I said in my post I got a rude awakening.

I grew out of wanting a perfect world where people don’t argue a long time ago. As you say, I will need to die to see that world which is the easy bit. The bit about doing everything Jesus says is the difficult bit!

Taize is a town in France. The community there was set up by Roger Schultz, (apologies if I have spelt this wrong), who I believe was Anglican. He was stabbed to death by a Romanian woman during evening prayer about three years ago. He was in his seventies. There was a bit of a hoo ha because he received the Eucharist from Pope Benedictat the funeral of Jean Paul II. Apparently however there are certain conditions under which someone who is not Catholic but professes a belief in the Eucharist can receive it, although I personally don’t know what they are. His intention in establishing the community in Taize was to serve as a sign to the world that people of different denominations can live peaceably together. I think there is another town in Eastern Europe that follows a similar ethos of respect for views that are not your own and people don’t argue about it. I remember someone once said to me, ‘win an arguement, loose a friend.’ It took some time for the Catholic Church to sanction Catholic monastries being set up there but they eventually did, in the sixties I think, and Roger Schultz is very much respected by Catholics.

I agree arguing is bad. Our life though is just a stepping stone to the after life. Do you feel a duty to evangelize others to insure they get to heaven. I am not stating Protestants don’t get to heaven. Any religion has some people that do not try to live a righteous life. Isn’t it better to try and teach them then get along and let them perhaps go to Hell?

i have lost many a “friend” because i got strong in my Catholic faith & had the audacity to speak to them about what i was learning (etc)…

Some friends… who ditch you when you start loving Jesus more… Maybe they were jealous…

that’s my position… Tell people the truth (in love) and if they don’t accept it… then argue 😃 (i’m kidding… *)…

the Bible says not to have anything to do with… well, waht we would call heretics and those who engage in “disorderly” behavior… To me, rejecting the Ctholic faith, even when you know its right… is disorderly behavior… (duh)*

Yes, I do feel a duty to evangelize to others. However, I feel that not all methods of ‘evangelizing’ are good one’s and in actual fact, discredit our faith. I am a big believer in evangelizing by living out my faith. That’s why I mentioned Taize as people live out their respective faiths there. If people aren’t moved by that, they will not be moved by clever arguement or debate. If you are good at argueing or debating, you may get your point over but it can have the adverse effect of making others resentful, even if your right, and therefore they will not accept what you say. Mother Theresa is one of many who I believe moved others by living her faith.

I do believe in teaching others however, they have to want to be taught. If they have no desire to be taught, there’s not a lot we as humans can do other than pray for God to create that desire. It is ultimately God who draws people and the only true conversion is one that is Spirit inspired. We do not have the power ourselves ‘save’ people from hell, it is God who does that. What we where called to do is state what we believe, if we are asked to, and live our faith which is greater than giving people a different set of ‘rules’ or religious tenet to live by. I’ve reached the point now where if people want to argue with me I simply say, ‘that is what I believe’ and won’t engage any further. Yes, I will state why I believe it if asked, however if what I say is rejected, I walk away. I heard a very good Priest describe this way of evangelizing in a nice way. He said that when you say something to someone, you place your words between that person and yourself, then leave them to decide whether or not they want to pick it up if that makes sense.

i think that people are always too worried about looking “nice”… sometimes in evangelizing, we have to say things that are not so nice… because t hose things are true… For example, i was pretty “old” before i heard some “uncomfortalbe sounding” scirputes… like the one where Jesus says that the road to eternal lifei s “narrow & there are few who find it” and that many will try to enter heaven but won’t be able…

frankly, i am sick & tired of everyone trying to “nice” up God’s word. God is holy… & we are to be holy in order to enter into Heaven where no impure thing will enter (Rev 21:27)… There is another part of the NT that says that if a person sins, he is of the devil…

God doesn’t play with words like people do… he doesn’t sugar-coat things… so why do humans??? Not everyone like sugar-coating anyway… (for one thing, sugar [white] is about the unhealthiest thing u can eat…) How appropos…

If people dont accept the Word unless it is put perfectly nicely… they probably will not accept it anyway…
