Tell us about your devotion to a rather unknown saint/blessed

I don’t think anyone has posted yet about Servant of God Elisabeth Leseur.

Elisabeth was a married woman and lived a life of suffering. Her husband Felix was an atheist and mocked her and tried to turn her away from God for years. She also endured many years of physical sufferings, including cancers and infertility, and ultimately died from breast cancer at age 48 in 1914. After her death, Felix found her diary in which she detailed her request for sufferings if they would be used to “purchase” Felix’s conversion. Before she died she had told Felix she was confident he would one day become a priest, which he obviously scoffed at.

Felix went on to become not only a Catholic, but a priest! Several years later, Archbishop Fulton Sheen attended a retreat under the direction of Felix. Sheen repeated Elisabeth and Felix’s story in many of his presentations, focusing on the role that spouses play in the sanctification of each other.

Elisabeth has been described as a married St. Therese of Liseux.

Elisabeth’s diary is so beautiful, I definitely urge everyone to read it if you can! ❤️
 
If you’re interested in reading about the life of a possible “up and coming” young saint in the Catholic Church… here is a link. His name is Mattie J.T. Stepanek.

I first learned of this holy young man, watching “The World Over” with Raymond Arroyo (EWTN). He lived a very short life, of heroic virtue. I have already asked Mattie for his intercession, for my mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease. God bless! 🙂

I have developed a devotion in the last year to Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko of Poland. Father Jerzy was a courageous Catholic priest who supported the Solidarity movement and opposed the communist regime. The monthly Masses he said in support of the motherland were faithfully attended by hundreds. Because he was constantly threatened, he was offerred a position in Rome. But he refused to leave his flock and stop speaking against the communist regime that was intent on stripping Poland of it’s Catholicism and culture. In the fall on 1984 he was kidnapped while driving home after saying Mass in a neighboring town. He was severely beaten and tortured and then tied up and thrown alive off a bridge into an icy river. He was only 37 years old at the time of his death. He was beautified by Pope Benedict in 2010. His mother, bless her heart, is still alive and was able to attend his Beautification ceremony.

I never really heard that her canonization was controversial. Saint John Vianney had spoken much about her in his various books.

My guess is that there are far more Saints (“not”) listed in liturgical calendars than are in namesake.

I’ve read, there is no actual proof of her existence. Details of her life were revealed by private revelation, and you know, our beloved Church’s stance on those.

St John Vianney would sometimes beg St Philomena to not perform a miracle. He hated the attention.

I guess I’m just trying to fathom by the limited faculty of logic as to why this young teen is known in the Catholic Church as a Saint by many. She does have quite a devote following.

Because, miracles keep happening. She hasn’t stopped helping us.

I have several saints that I include in my daily prayers.St.Anne,St.Anthony of Padua,St.Gerard,St Dymphna,St.Lucy,St.Jude,St.Monica.Of the lot,I suppose St.Dymphna would be the least well known.

Do saints actually perform miracles?
 
The Blessed Mother (is she really a saint or is she actually higher than the saints?) and St. Therese Liseux (sp). I’m currently having an eye problem that my doctor assures me isn’t very serious, but I plan to pray to St. Clare of Assisi, who was a patroness of eye problems. I also greatly admire St. Francis of Assisi for his love of animals, but I don’t pray to him.
 
Of course the greatest saint…Our Blessed Mother.Also,St Lucy is a patron saint of eye disease,didn’t know about St.Clare:)
 
Along the same ideas of this thread I bought a wonderful children’s book called “Once Upon a Time Saints” written by Ethel Pochocki. It is a nook of saint stories, she prefers lesser known saints and tells the more legendary stories of thier lives to capture the imagination. It is a perfect read aloud book for kids.
One story is about St. Comgall who was able to speak to animals.

yes. I had a tough time getting my hands on a St. Dymphna medal. I had to look all over.

On my last visit to a local Cistercian Monastery I pick up my “new” saintly friend called

Saint Raphael Arnaiz Baron–Blessed Pope John Paul proposed him as a saint for youth.Since he died of severe diabetes I would suggest that he would be a good heavenly help to those who struggle with this health issue.

Yes,Mattie touched my heart also.I would say that his mother is a living “saint”! Well,all that Mattie needs to do is to answer your prayers and those of others ;as a proof of his holiness.At the moment Mattie is in the list of “could be saints” but I am glad that you mentioned him never-the-less,as my heart tells me that he is in Heaven.Here is a link of Mattie from his mothers’ perpective–God Bless you and all mothers.

Hello everyone!

I like St. Gemma Galgani and St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows; two saints from the Passionists. For the blesseds, I really like Blessed Maria Sagrario of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity. Both of these Blesseds are Discalced Carmelites.
I consider these saints and blesseds as part of my patron saints along with those who are much known.
