Teresa Heinz is dropping the 'Kerry' from her last name

Poor John, just when you thought it couldn’t get worse for him. :o

Probably just another marriage of convenience like Bill and Hilary.

A campaign convenience is no more. According to The Washington Times, **Teresa Heinz, **the erstwhile **Teresa Heinz Kerry, **has stopped using the last name of her husband, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, last year’s Democrat presidential nominee.

Mrs Heinz-Kerry used Heinz in most of her previous iterations. I guess as candidate’s wife she wanted to try to put for the image of dutiful wife. Sitting out here in the cheap seats I see what he gets from HER but I do not understand what she gets from HIM. Imagine LIVING with that annoying voice every day of your life. Listening to him was like fingernails on a chalkboard. And yes I know Pres Bush tends to mangle the language but his tone and inflection is simply more pleasant listening.

As much as I am no fan of the Kerrys politically, I kind of think it’s mean spirited to cast aspersions on their marriage. We are called to love the sinner while hating the sin, so I may hate the ideas they espouse but I don’t hate them or wish them ill in any aspect of their lives. We should not put much thought towards this gossip that’s circulating through the media…it’s really way far below us as Catholics.

I haven’t seen any gossip about the state of their marriage. I think it looked like a political move to add Kerry to her name while campaigning, just as Hillary Rodham added Clinton when Bill was campaigning. Now the campaign is over she’s going back to using Heinz as she did previously. I don’t see the discussion revolving around our opinions of the quality of their marriage although I realize speculating on the reasons they married in the first place might be a bit tacky. Sorry.

Is this a Catholic Forum? I haven’t heard such negativity since I last conversed with some people from a “born again” church. They denounced Catholicism with as much vehemence as I see here for Ms. Heinz actions.

If she chooses to use her own name, what of it. I never took my husband’s last name. According to the Bible, the man is to go to the women’s family. I never understood the taking of a man’s last name.

I have established my professional, academic and charitable life under my given name. I would be distressed to find so many people having nothing better to do than to heap dispersions upon my choice.

Perhaps, I have joined the wrong group. I was looking to commune with those who followed the ways of Christ.

Is Heinz her maiden name, or the name of her first husband?

I can see retaining one’s maiden name, especially for professional purposes. However retaining the first husband’s name in the second marriage would be strange.

I was just noting the article link that was posted which is positively ripe with innuendo, winks winks, and nudge, nudges. I find it so interesting that you can be a media darling one day (strong woman who is also a dutiful, loving wife) and the next day be raked over the coals (Heinz drops Kerry). Just goes to show you how fickle the media can be. I guess this is what you get when you choose to be a media darling instead of one of God’s darling children.

Do you have children? Who’s last name do they have? By having a father or a mother with a different last name, it gives the IMPRESSION that the parents are living out of wedlock and the children are illegimitate. Granted, such a misunderstanding can be easily explained but why created the doubt in people’s mind’s in the first place?

For professional reasons, my wife continues to use her maiden name but legally (driver’s license, etc.), she has taken on my last name symbolizing that we are one family.

**Since you make the accusation of vehemence, please point it out. I see some discussion and some jokes, but little, if any, vehemence. Except, that is, in your post denouncing the rest of us. :confused: **

Sorry you feel this way Mary, but this “In The News” forum has a lot of castoffs and hangers-on from the old Politics forum and this crowd tends to be a bit more rough and tumble than the more religiously aligned forums, like Apologetics, Spirituality, or Family Life. Since many of the topics discussed here have an ideological bent, people tend to be a little more heated than the other places.

According to what bible? I see that the man leaves his mother and father, but I see no place where he joins his wife’s family. Where did you get this silly notion?

I’ll have to agree, if Mary was truely following the ways of Christ, and His Church, she would have taken her husband’s last name. I agree with the dissent this would cause amongst the family. It can be explained away, but eventually everyonen will get tired of explainin’ and it will breed resentment.
