And they say liberals are the ones who drag Trump into everything.
Only dragging President Trump into this thread to highlight the disingenuous outrage by the feminist et all,re his comments of nearl 12years ago.Yet they flocked to the Shades of Grey book like a bunch of lustful women, with no self control.

Yeah, I tend to think that the stronger argument for avoiding this stuff is that it’s bad art, not that it contains nudity or whatever.

Exactly. Unfortunately, life imitates art, and sometimes vice versa (according to Oscar Wilde). Like I said though, I don’t plan on seeing it.

I’m not sure that “I’m not seeing that movie because I’m not interested” is the same as boycotting. I’m not seeing Pixar movies unless I’m babysitting my nephews, not because they offend me and I think they should be taken out of theaters, but because I don’t have small children and I’m not really interested. I just think “boycott” in the context of Fifty Shades of Grey is a little overly dramatic. It’s just a cheesy movie with horrible reviews aimed at women who want something “spicy.” We should really just let it go.

I just don’t think kids are going to see this as particularly interesting or dangerous. Virtually every 16-21 year old today has a smartphone in his or her pocket, and can pull up mountains of incredibly graphic pornography within five seconds. The idea that a movie that shows some bare butts and breasts is going to strike them as exciting and dangerous just seems naive to me. I think they picture this as not much beyond the Victoria’s Secret catalogue.
Now, read the rest of what I said about boycotting having the opposite effect. Don’t be selective with my quotes. I’m not Pope Francis, you don’t have to take my words out of context. Who said I take my nieces and nephews to pixar films? I mean, I do, but even if I had a girlfriend, that’s still what I’d prefer. If I wanted to see s & m abuse, I mean, I have an internet connection.

I wasn’t trying to mischaracterize what you were saying: I only had in mind the post I directly quoted. Namely, I was referring to the difference between boycotting a movie and simply not seeing it. I apologize if it seemed that I was trying to distort what you were saying. I understand that you weren’t advocating a boycott.

As to taking your nieces and nephews to Pixar movies, you’ve lost me on that one.

I have read a basic sypnosis, I mean, it’d be a bit hypocritical of me to condemn something I know nothing about. I think you’re right. What bothers me is that one of my female friends (when I saw the book in her apartment) out and out called it romance. This is a girl that comes from an abusive childhood. I feel like it’s telling women “yes, this behaviour is okay”.

Tereso Tomeo is a strong voice for moral media, and showing people how much of the media is poisonous. I applaud her ongoing efforts.

This is called “bolting the door after the steed has been stolen.”

Where was the concern when this filth’s illegitimate parent, “Twilight”, was being shilled as acceptable reading for young women?

Remember kids, the devil works by degrees.
Well, I read the first 3 Twilight books and skimmed the 4th one before deciding I’d have enough of them. And if you’re claiming Twilight itself is porn, I’d disagree with you.

But if your point is that Twilight shows a seriously unhealthy, borderline abusive relationship, I’d agree with that.

I do recall some in the Christian community finding Twilight to be acceptable because “at least the couple abstain until marriage” or “the 4th book sends a pro-life message”. However, I think this is only true on the surface. The couple doesn’t have actual sex until the wedding night but they do sleep in the same bed many times.

(As do the couple in the Hunger Games and it does seem this idea of “chaste co-sleeping” or at least “chaste cohabitation” is more popular than before among young people and I do find this to be problematic.)

And as for the “pro-life” message, Bella starts out befriending the “good” vampires who abstain from killing humans, but finds the “evil” vampires who do feed on humans to be, well, evil. But in the last book she happily allies with them in order to protect people she loves, apparently not caring about other humans she knows her new “friends” prey upon as a matter of course.

The idea seemed to be that the worth of humans is all relative. If the vampires want to protect them and/or turn them into fellow vampires, then they’re very valuable. But if they don’t, it’s fine to see them only as a food source. This seems very close to the idea that the worth of an unborn baby is relative to whether the mother wants the baby or not.

So yes, Twilight is problematic in many ways but I wouldn’t say it’s equivalent to *50 Shades *even if the author was inspired by Twilight.

I don’t think anyone is claiming 50 Shades is appropriate for young people, though. AFAIK most women who read it were the same type of middle-aged housewife who more “vanilla” romance novels have been traditionally marketed to.

The only reason Lego batman is #1 not #2 is due to the kids, no adult is going to go alone to see a lego cartoon movie.
I know two young adults (18 & 19 years old) who just saw the lego movie today.

From Matt Walsh’s Facebook post:

It’s hard to decide what’s a sadder picture: the women who will go see the 50 Shades sequel this weekend while pretending that they’re better than the sorts of dudes who frequent strip clubs and porn shops, or the henpecked men who will accompany their wives and girlfriends to the theater so that they may sit in obedient silence as their women fantasize about being sexually abused by a sociopathic millionaire for 2 hours. But I guess I need not decide between the two. Everyone involved is degrading themselves. The whole scene is disturbing. A bunch of adults sitting together in a room to watch bondage porn based on an erotic fanfic novel written at a third grade reading level. It’s like something from Idiocracy, if Idiocracy were rated NC-17.

You can do better than this, folks. Hold yourself to a higher standard. Value your dignity and your intelligence just a little more. Don’t line up like cattle to consume the inane, brain melting, soul numbing filth that Hollywood has cynically produced for you. Resist. Isn’t that the trendy slogan these days? Resist. Yes, resist the urge to be as morally vacant and self-debasing as Hollywood expects you to be. Resist, I say.

If you’re looking for a good date idea instead, may I suggest bowling? Or Lego Batman. That’s what I’ll be taking my son to this weekend, in fact. And I fully expect a film about plastic superheroes to be Citizen Kane in comparison to 50 Shades. I’m also guessing that the acting will be much more lifelike.

I have coworkers who can’t wait to go see 50 Shades and are even planning to go with their 20-something-year old daughters to see it. Would they really want their daughters to get involved with a man who physically and sexually abuses them for pleasure? Why would they even consider endorsing this behavior? They’re the first ones to say that anyone who hurts their princess would have to face the wrath of an avenging mother, so why would they present this to their daughters as acceptable treatment from a man who supposedly loves them? “But it’s consensual!” If a woman who accepts mistreatment because she doesn’t value herself or is afraid of the consequences of resisting, is that really consensual?

I suppose that’s true. I mean, I don’t want to see it, and I have no desire to see it. I don’t see why anyone would want to see it. I have my views on the type of film it is, and I have my views on the books as well. My understanding is that it originated as Twilight fanfiction. I saw the first Twilight film. I am not a fan.
me either.

what shocks me is how many Christians like these kind of books and films. a strange kind of romance.

Yeah, I have noticed that. I blame my generation on accepting it and my dad’s generation (may he rest in peace, but I feel he’d agree with this statement) for opening the doors to it.

Clearly you missed the point…

I’ve never read a twilight or 50 shades book. I have enough excitement in my life, and from what I’ve heard the writing is absolutely terrible and all just cheap cliche shock value. Not something I’d waste my time with. Plus isn’t the lead character abusive, or a sociopath of some kind? How do people get into that **** and spin it as romance?
I’ve never read it, never would, have no desire to, although I can understand, in a sarcastic sort of way, why it is so popular. Just the usual crud most seem to be into now.

Feminists should be for all women, yet the ones they target the most are the tiny women, just like them, growing inside of their womb. Another body within a body. Just today, I saw ultrasound pictures of an expectant mother’s baby girl, and the mother was telling me about her tiny uterus and ovaries. A very tiny woman, with no rights at all, hated enough to be ripped apart and thrown in the garbage as though she were garbage. I’ve always felt strongly on this enough as it is, but today I felt even closer to it, just seeing those pictures. Anyone who thinks it is not a real child, and a woman-to-be at that, with little ovaries and a uterus, is being callous and unrealistic.

I am boycotting it by default. I skip anything with gratuitous violence or sex. I hope others as good Catholics do the same.

The 50 shades movies are extremely popular around here, it seems every woman I talk to absolutely loves these movies, one gal at work actually told me they are so popular because secretly, most women would love to be in this type of relationship and have those things done to them, now, the rational side of me would immediately disagree, but from all my past GFs and ex-wife, I know she is right.
What the women want has less to do with the sex but that the guy is rich and he spoils her. Like the meme says, if Christian lived in a trailer park women would not find the books or movies romantic or sexy.

Guarantee no one 16-21 cares about this movie in the slightest. This is thoroughly the domain of the bored middle aged housewife.

No idea how this movie/book became such a cultural lightning rod. It’s just softcore porn wrapped around a flimsy plot, basically no different than anything on Cinemax or HBO after midnight. Getting all worked up and trying to boycott it makes it way more important than it is. Besides, the movie is already getting abysmal reviews, so it’ll probably just peter out on its own.
I’m really curious why you you are so sure of this. Unfortunately you’re mistaken. That age group is closer in age to Ana, and to Christian, than to middle aged housewives. It’s far more concerning for that age group because they are still figuring out healthy relationships as opposed to married ladies who want to spice things up in the bedroom. And unless they are in the BDSM scene, neither group has a clue that Christian’s actions violate their guidelines of “safe, sane, and consensual.” The author isn’t in the scene nor did she do her research; she got her ideas from other fanfiction. BTW teens write stuff like this and they are not writing from experience either. And that’s the hetero stuff. The most popular is slash. Women write it and women read it. I know there are other Twilight fics that feature Edward and that werewolf guy and some are probably better written than Twilight or 50 Shades.

Can you cite something here? Because that would surprise me. I’m 32, and I work with a bunch of people in the 18-35 range, and I have not seen this mentioned with anything other than a yawn or an eyeroll. It’s not the 90s anymore: kids who want to see depictions sex don’t have to sneak into R-rated movies. They can pull up all the porn they want with the click of a button.

I’ve only ever heard young people mention Fifty Shades of Gray derisively, usually with some reference to it being “grandma porn.” Not because the characters are old, but because the people who seem to be titillated by it tend to be people who didn’t come of age in the era of freely available porn all over the internet.

It’s not that the kids are too pure for Fifty Shades of Gray: they’re too jaded. Seeing someone getting spanked or whatever doesn’t even register for them as anything particularly interesting.
