Are we to believe that the moral decay of the U.S. began with the introduction of The Pill in 1960? Did the morality pendulum fail to swing even an inch in the 1920s? The 1800s? The 1700s?Solutions? How about Detroit as an example? Mayor Bing has gone to Church leaders and told them that they can inspire and motivate people, young and old, to do what’s right.
The “marriage doesn’t work anymore” idea is part of Hippie culture, it’s part of radical feminist culture and it’s part of anarchist culture. Tearing the family apart was job one.
The core problem is not “two parents are a luxury” - two are a necessity. If everyone would just wake up and realize that there was a carefully laid out plan to destroy the family, and thereby, society in general, we will get somewhere. There are many married Christians who are supporting their families and home schooling
1960 The Pill approved by the FDA.
1967 The Pill reaches wide use. Most Americans still live on farms and rural areas.
1968 Pope Paul VI publishes Humanae Vitae and warns what will happen if artificial contraception is used, including increased promiscuity. He was right.
1970s Adult bookstores open everwhere selling graphic photos of prostitutes.
Swinger magazines appear offering immoral sexual encounters.
Strip bars and clubs open everywhere.
Abortion on demand is legalized.
1980s No-Fault divorce completes its sweep of the country.
1990s The American Civil Liberties Union wakes up one day and they are shocked - shocked - to see a Nativity in front of a public building. It’s Unconstitutional ! But they offer a deal: “OK. You can have your creche but it’s got to be surrounded by plastic reindeer and candy canes and a plastic Santa. Cause if you don’t, we’re taking you to court!”
The ACLU discovers religious monuments and paintings in other public buildings. Get 'em out or we’ll sue!
So - no one wants to be married anymore? Or marriage is a guarantee of a lifetime of misery? I don’t think so.
For black communities, when the hip-hop/rap/gangsta culture tells young black men that it’s not your responsibility if the girl gets fat - where did they get that message? Anyone?
When sex is downgraded to simple pleasure with zero responsibilty or even knowing the name of the person you had sex with - where did they get that message?
Turn on your TV, go see a Jennifer Aniston movie, or watch Knocked Up, where a young woman has sex with a guy she just met.
Have sex - just sex - and forget about it. It doesn’t mean anything except kicks. That is being heavily marketed right now, heavily marketed. Look at the latest issue of Cosmopolitan - 60 new sex secrets. What? They couldn’t stop at 5,247?
Just stop it. Turn off the media, listen to Catholic radio, read your Bible, go to Church and turn your back on the world. Do what’s right.
Peace,
Ed
The fact that marriage does not work for many couples is as new or as old as the institution of marriage itself. It hardly had its genesis in the 60s.
Oh, what’s the use? There is no discussion when one door is sealed shut. We are each entitled to an opinion. But discussion here is futile.
This is one facet of Catholicism that may lead to its partial undoing. That makes this not a forum at all, but a billboard.
One more thing: Catholic radio is a stalwart contender in the US media. It is not an exclusive service, it is persuasive and gently vociferous, just as any other electronic medium in this country today.
