Perry, the longest-serving governor in the country who has accounted for 37 percent of all jobs created since the recession, will use his announcement to set the agenda for his presidential bid, focusing heavily on the need to fix the economy.

“Our nation cannot and must not endure four more years of aimless foreign policy,” Perry will say, according to prepared remarks. “We cannot and must not endure four more years of rising unemployment … rising taxes … rising debt … and rising energy dependence on nations that intend us harm. It is time to get America working again.”

Perry’s announcement will come at the RedState Gathering

Why I’m Running

Posted on August 13th, 2011

What I learned in my 20’s traveling the globe as an Air Force pilot, our current president has yet to acknowledge in his 50’s – that we are the most exceptional nation on the face of the earth.

As Americans, we believe freedom is a gift from God, and government’s prime function is to defend it. We don’t see the role of government as a nanny state, and we recognize there is no government money that wasn’t once earned through the sweat and toil of private citizens.

That’s why we object to an Administration that sees its role as spending our children’s inheritance on failed economic theories that have given us record debt and left far too many unemployed, threatening not only our economy, but our security. Our reliance on foreign creditors and sources of energy not only compromises our national sovereignty, but jeopardizes our national future.

America’s place in the world is in peril, not only because of disastrous economic policies, but from the incoherent muddle known as our foreign policy. Our president has thumbed his nose at traditional allies such as Israel and Great Britain.

We will not sit back and accept our current misery…because a great country requires a better direction…because a renewed nation requires a new president. That’s why, with faith in God, the support of my family, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of America, I am a candidate for President of the United States.

And I will work every day to make Washington, D.C. as inconsequential in your lives as I can.

How many of those jobs were minimum wage with few benefits? I’ve heard it said 40%.

I am from Texas and I can say that Perry has moral issues. He portrays himself as a christian yet he cuts funds in education, supports capital punishment, and has liberalized gun controls creating a culture of violence. He claims that he is chosen by God which makes him a heretic and a man bearing the sin of pride.

"according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost 40 percent of those 211,000 jobs pay at or below the minimum wage. You want to flip burgers, Texas is a great place”

Nothing wrong with flipping burgers. They’re just not the kind of jobs that can sustain most families for the long run.

He is a better speaker than Mitt or G.W.Bush
While I have been considering Perry as a second choice, I’d have to say, ‘I hope he’s not another G.W. Bush.’

I don’t agree with his view of the death penalty, and question his stance on immigration and gay marriage. Seems he’s gone back and forth on those issues. I’d like a politician of convictions and not prone to pandering decisions.

Can someone fill me in on the STD vaccine for young girls mandate he signed?

No one wants to see Obama go more than I, but if Perry is another Bush, no thanks.

More jobs is a good thing, even if they are lower paid. It’s not like we traded high paying jobs for minimum wage ones. Besides, the demand for jobs in resturants and retail stores (the typical minimum wage starting locations) reflect the fact that people have disposable income to spend in fast-food resturants and the mall.

One completely antecdotal story about Texas. This winter and spring we all heard how hard it was going to be for students to find summer jobs in this economy. My oldest child is just at the age where he can work. All of his friends had jobs this summer - all of them made more than minimum wage. Several were “recruited” though they had not even intended to work this summer. My son had two unsolicited job offers that he turned down because he was already working plenty of hours.

I certainly wouldn’t give Rick Perry full credit for all the jobs. But Texas is doing better than most of the country economically.

As far as the poitical landscape, since Obama will likely have the Democratic nomination sewn up, the only hope for Catholic voters is a pro-life Republican. Perry seems to have more of the “whole package” than most of the pack. He has executive experience, he’s pro-life, he has a good track record on economic issues, he’s pro-America, he’s a vet, he has a good deal of charisma. Not that all of these are predictive of being a good president, but candidates always seem to be criticized for lack of one or more of these qualifications.

It wasn’t an STD vaccine. It was Gardisil, the vaccine against HPV. HPV can be contracted through sexual contact but it can also be spread by kissing among other methods. HPV is strongly linked to cervical cancer accounting for an overwhelming majority of the cases.

The controversy surrounded two main issues.

First, by mandating it for junior high girls, many conservatives felt it would encourage sexual behavior by eliminating one of the risks. If it had been added to the regular list of vaccinations to be given before kids start school, it probably wouldn’t have been a big deal, IMHO. While Perry championed the mandate, the state eventually backed off and made it optional.

The second issue was allegations of a sweetheart relationship between the Perry government and the manufacturer of Gardisil. I don’t think that was ever proven but it made him look bad.
