Texas teacher quits over anti-Catholic tracts

MINERAL WELLS, Texas (AP) — A North Texas junior high school teacher has resigned after school district officials received complaints that she was giving her 12-year-old students anti-Catholic tracts.

Mineral Wells school district Assistant Superintendent Linda Porter-Bradford said Monday the district has accepted the resignation of Mineral Wells Junior High English teacher Marsha McDonald after she was placed on administrative leave.

According to the Mineral Wells Index (bit.ly/tep6JA), parents complained that McDonald gave a pamphlet titled “Are Roman Catholics Christians?” to a 12-year-old student and offered other students as many of the pamphlets as they wanted. The Index reported that “Cool Assembly of God” and “Rev. Marsha McDonald, pastor,” were printed on the back of the pamphlets.

The mother said this all started Monday when McDonald, of Cool, made a comment about the child’s necklace, wondering what it was, said the mother. She said her child replied, “It’s similar to a rosary.”

“She asked her what religion she was and [the child] told her ‘Catholic’ and that’s when [the teacher] got the pamphlet, ‘Are Roman Catholics Christians?,’ out of her back pocket,” said the mother.

I would hope that a teacher would have more sense than to abuse her position of authority like that. But perhaps since the teacher is also pastor of the Cool Assembly of God she was looking to make a career change?

Assembly of God folks are incredibly anti-Catholic, from my experience.

Good thing the teacher resigned. How would she feel if someone in authority gave her an anti- Assembly of God tract? I know public schools were historically protestant, but a child should be able to go to school without having his or her beliefs attacked and that goes for everyone. Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Muslim, even some of the more out- there religions like Rastafarian and Scientology. If it can be proved the religion is actively abusing the child, it’s a different story, but otherwise keep the proselytizing for outside of school.

According to the article linked by Dale, it occurred during a creative writing class. Also to the right of the article and under the advertisement is a “related photo” showing a “Chick tract” (linked to "Chick.com)

We all know that “Chick tracts” are very creative writing…so…maybe it fits…

All kidding aside, it is unfortunate that this occurred and just shows the further need for all true Christians to Live out God’s Love, to learn our faith, and to share it with others in charity.

Oh, I felt like I just got slapped in the face after reading the article. Since I am from Texas, all I can say that was unfair that McDonald . Sounds like conflict of interest.

I say she should have resigned and did the right thing by doing so if she was giving out anti-Catholic tracts. This is especially so if the school was a Catholic school. That said, I hope she wasn’t passing out Chick tracts.

It appears that it was indeed a Chick tract.

An unfortunate situation all around.
Unfortunate that the teacher lost her job, unfortunate that she actually believes this sort of thing. Unfortunate that these 12 y.o. children were subjected to this.

Perhaps the most unfortunate thing is that it seems that a wonderful “teaching moment” was missed.
I don’t know this for sure, but the article is silent on whether the parents attempted to meet with the teacher with the aim of correcting her misrepresentation of Catholic beliefs. Perhaps they dis and she refused to meet or was adamant in her views and would not listen.
It is more likely that the parents simply called the school and lodged the complaint that resulted in the teacher resigning. Something that is more likely to harden her heart than soften it.

I’ve had the opposite experience. As an Army Chaplain Assistant (now retired), I had nothing but good experiences with the AoG chaplains I worked with. That’s to say that all AoG ministers are as ecumenical as the ones I worked with, but these guys were great…then again, the army guys are seminary trained, most AoG pastors do not have a degree from a seminary.

I would expect that those who choose to become chaplains in the military would be open and respectful of other faiths. Sort of goes with the territory doesn’t it? they don’t generally have a chaplain for every sect on every base do they?? So a given chaplain would have to deal with members of many different denominations.

it was the teachers choice to resign no-one forced her all the school did is basically suspend her. She did something wrong and she obviously intentionally wanted to attack Catholics and unfortunately a lot of teachers in schools love to attack Catholics as well as other christians and never get in trouble.

This is impossibility. Even the idea that" you should should go to school without having your beliefs attacked" is essentially the privileging of one idea above others that are exclusionary. A judgment has to be made. This teacher’s judgment was wrong about Catholicism, but the modern curriculum is decidedly against religious beliefs (despite their commonplace and celebrated appearance in schools prior to progressive domination).

That is shockingly unprofessional behaviour on the part of that teacher. Outrageous. Just outrageous.
IMNSHO, she needs to give up teaching*** and*** preaching, until she learns how to behave as a responsible adult.
