See, now that would be my problem. There is no way that a Catholic who actually knows and understands what the church teaches could make such a statement. Mo5, I urge you to go back and really examine the theology that you think you disagree with the church on and insure that you are really at divergent opinion with it.Yes, I do and even as a Catholic, my theology has always been more Protestant than Catholic.
I feel a very strong call from the Lord to serve this year and asking him to lead me where he wants me to serve has lead me to this other church. It’s awesome - even if you can’t see it![]()
There was a time when I thought something similar but it wasn’t until I sat down and really got into the apologetics of why we believe these things that I discovered that my theology was in agreement with the Catholic faith and that the n-C teachings which I had been led to believe were based on the Bible alone were in fact based on select Bible verses and passages taken out of context. Frankly, I felt that I had been ripped off because the people who told me that they were “Bible believing Christians” proved to be highly selective Bible believing Christians and were in fact teaching me wrong. Perhaps it’s not completely their fault per se, they are repeating what they have been taught by others who are doing the same and those who taught them as well. It reminds me of a game of “gossip”, where the message that is whispered in the first person’s ear is not the same one that the last person announces to the group.
With everyone presuming the authority to read the Word of God and interpret doctrines based on what they understand (asserting that the Holy Spirit is guiding them) that result really isn’t that far fetched.
One example is Baptism.
Is it necessary for salvation?
If not, why bother?
Does the New Testament speak to this?
Yet many churches hold it as a peripheral doctrine and purport it to be optional.
There are many many different n-C teachings about baptism. Which one is correct, if any?
Inconsistency of teaching from church group to church group makes the message confused and watered down (IMO), but what is the truth? If the fullness of truth is unimportant then any old church will do, but that certainly doesn’t seem to align with even a cursory reading of the New Testament I have in hand. So… what’s up with that?
No, before I abandoned the Catholic faith (again) I’d have to know that the church I was moving into agrees with the whole New Testament and not just their interpretations of some selected passages and verses. I mean…this is my eternal soul we are talking about here.
