Thankful for what?
by Joseph Farah
November 22, 2005
I walked through a public elementary school this week and looked at the Thanksgiving artwork produced by the kids.
These poor kids don’t have a clue about the meaning of the holiday. They are being intentionally deceived about its origins. They are not even given a hint as to the spiritual nature of the historical event.
That’s not separation of church and state. That’s separation of education from reality.

I get really sad about this over here. Christmas is all about getting and flashing lights. Not sure anyone even really knows about Christ. I do so look forward to it though. I find a real connection with my saviour at important times in the Churches year like these!

I do not think you can totally blame the schools for this. Kids are with their parents most of the time they aren’t in school. Why haven’t the parents taught them to be thankful? My kids go to public school and there is a wide variety of families represented in this school. Lots of the kids know just what they are thankful for and many of them say they are thankful for church, family and God. This is in a public school.

I think that the US actually has a big advantage over us, with Thanksgiving coming when it does. The UK focuses on (the commercial side of) Christmas from an increasingly absurdly early date. In the US they can only really do so when Thanksgiving is over and done with.

I hate to disabuse you of your happy scenario, but this year the Christmas stuff was out in the stores here in the USA before Halloween (Oct. 31st). How I wish they would wait until after Thanksgiving like they used to do, but there’s too much money to be made, so as soon as possible, out come the Christmas decorations. I’ve even gotten catalogs in June advertising Christmas CDs and collectibles. The secular world doesn’t give a flying pig about the meaning of Christmas, only in the bucks they can get out of it.

Laura Ingraham talked about this “cheesy” trend today on the radio. She mentioned Nordstrom, demonstrating some class, as one company that prides itself on waiting until after Thanksgiving.

Oh well, that’s a shame 😦 I obviously wasn’t paying enough attention to shopping trends when I was living in the USA (odd, that… 🙂

I still like the idea of Thanksgiving though, and I’m sure it buffers off Christmas for many people, even if not the stores.
