Thankfulness: A rant

Oh absolutely.
Perhaps you should read the OP again.

You passed judgement on all of those people when you indicate they are the reason the Mass was unbearable.

Again, critical reading skills are vital…
Wrong again! The streak continues.

I said the Mass was unbearable TO ME. In my own PERSONAL opinion. I did not say that that those people were objectively bad or wrong. I said I personally did not appreciate their irreverence.

Nowhere did I say they were doing wrong or were bad.

Hence, no judgment occurred.

Then it is your contention that these people did no wrong.
Correct?
NO NO NO NO!

In order for me to declare them “in the right,” it would require me to JUDGE them.

I would be JUDGING them to be RIGHT, not WRONG. Judgment goes both ways.

Either you’re trying to trick me into saying I’d judge them (which won’t work) or you need to peruse en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic
Please indicate in the OP where exactly you specify this.
It’s implied by “rant,” of course. A rant is always the writer’s personal opinion.

Not at all.
Your inability to bear the Mass was real.
Your irrititation with everyone around you was real.

Your comparison of their behavior with your own was real, and prideful.

So where do you indicate that all of this was in your head?

You’ve undoubtedly seen hundreds of these kinds of polemics here, so it’s probably nothing new, but…

I’m back at my university today and was forced to attend the Ordinary Form of the Mass at the university’s Newman Center.

It made me SO thankful that I have the ability to attend the eminently more uplifting and reverent sacrifice of the Extraordinary Form on Sundays.

We have a priest who is devout and young and who avoids liturgical abuses like the plague. He wears very traditional vestments and uses liturgical items made of precious metals. He got rid of the previous priest’s “tabernacle-to-the-side-and-smiley-faces-on-chasubles” mentality. But unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to make this mass bearable.

The distributors of the ashes were all male students, all clad in ripped jeans and untucked t-shirts.
The Eucharistic Ministers were those same men plus one middle-aged woman. Needless to say, I slipped into the priest’s line and knelt for Holy Communion.

The students socialized in loud whispers before Mass while myself and my friends who also attend the EOF knelt praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
The students socialized in regular voices after Mass while my friends and I said the prayers after Low Mass.
It made me contemplate the contrasting attitudes about prayer and the Real Presence in the tabernacle: those students who grew up in the OF and those who have had the gift of the EOF experience given to them.

After the opening hymn, the students slammed their music books into the holders, with little regard for the opening Sign of the Cross. They shuffled up, almost all receiving Holy Communion in the hand.

Many women were dressed immodestly, with skin-tight clothing. It was not only immodest, but provided an occasion of sin for all men in attendance who were trying to worship.

In all, it was a somewhat depressing experience, but it was slightly remedied after I spoke with Father following Mass. We largely agree on traditionalism. Methinks I’ll inquire as to the possibility of a monthly EOF.

The whole experience makes me thankful for the EOF. We must pray daily for its resurrection as the primary rite of Roman Catholic worship!

Rant ended.
I doubt most of these students would ever be at the EOF so that wouldn’t help them too much. You should pray that these students will learn the proper respect for the Mass, proper mode of dress for the Mass (actually for modesty in AND outside of Mass)…you get the idea. And if the mode of female dress is that immodest the pastor should say something to the whole congregation along with addressing rules of etiquette for Mass or posting it in a bulletin.

So you found the Mass unbearable because of a bunch of people doing nothing wrong?
Ugh this is impossible!

You don’t want me to judge them WRONG, but you DO want me to judge them RIGHT?

You are trying to enforce a double-standard!

Here’s the deal:

I found the Mass unbearable because I PERSONALLY disapproved of their actions and dress.

It’s not my place to declare them objectively wrong or objectively right---- ie: to JUDGE them.

If I were to say, “they were bad because of their actions,” I would be judging them. But I am NOT saying that. I am saying, “I personally disapprove of their actions, but I won’t declare them wrong or right.”

YES!!! Let us defend irreverence for love of the misguided, the uncatechized, and the ignorant (and let’s face it, it ain’t necessarily their fault). Let relativism rule. Let us continue to uncrown Him!

2 more cents duly deposited.

That’s why I personally disapprove of them, Maurin!

I just won’t take that extra step to judge them wrong or right, since that’s not my place.

Sancto Spiritu,

I promised myself that I would not answer any more of your ridiculous posts, but couldn’t resist getting a chuckle out of your calling me a liberal from the baby boomer generation.

Actually, I am a product of a Catholic school education with nuns (wearing habits) teaching us the liturgy of the Mass (which we attended every day before school) and the prayers in Latin. This was in the 30’s, long before V2.

I have never had anyone before call me a liberal (not sure I like that).

I am not sure you really know what a ‘traditional Catholic’ is. All you know is what you want and perceive to be our Catholic Mass.

I agree with another poster who thought this thread should be closed. Hope the moderator is reading this.

:yup:

Traditionalism is now “ridiculous?” How sad.

Apparently those nuns (wearing habits) didn’t do their jobs. You now abhor the tradition they tried to instill in you.

Now this is just getting ridiculous. You are being disingenuous by responding as if mullenpm said traditionalism was ridiculous when you know full when it was meant to refer to your “posts”.

And you also are telling someone else what they “abhor”. My you are a bit prideful aren’t you? Not only that, but I think you need to respect your elders.

Another thread I am just going to have to leave. Goodbye.

Respect is a two-way street.

Admittedly, my last post was a bit over-the-top.

Of course it is.

You pridefully contrasted their behavior to your own.
Now you wish to lay claim to non-judgement.

It would seem you are painted into a corner.
Huh?

I am absolutely convinced you didn’t read anything I wrote.
