Hello-

My family and I were watching the Brady Bunch on the Hallmark channel. Then this commercial comes on:

youtube.com/watch?v=S-7IA54-tmE

My son who is 7 want to know how come the guy is married to another man!!

THANKS!!

Jill

:rolleyes::(:mad:
That pretty much sums up my reaction. Watching so-called family friendly TV is becoming nearly impossible, thanks to the commercials.

Oh, how terrible for you. It must be awful to be a straight woman and have your child see this. The struggles that homosexuals go through pale in comparison with your exposure to a mundane 30 second advertisement. How ever will you cope? Your son has been scarred for life and you need to get hiim into therapy immediately.

Wow! The reply was not a very Christian response. It maybe you who needs therapy and a spell check too!

Um, excuse me, but YES, having to explain homosexual “marriage” to a 7 year old IS a bit much to ask of anyone! At best, they’ll come away with the idea that marriage is just for living and hanging out with your best buddy (cause why else would 2 guys want to “marry”), or worst, you’ll have to get into the whole sex discussion (if the kid realizes that most people have babies after they marry, and asks if the guys will have babies). It is a whole flipping can of worms that’s being forced on kids at younger and younger ages. I’d rather NO commericals relating to marriage at all than this. It especially shouldn’t be on during prime time. (But I’m still pissed at what they’ve done to “Family Feud”. There used to be innuendos, but it was safe to watch with kids. Now, it’s darn near xrated, and it’s on at 6:00 pm!). I’ve had it with commerical television altogether. Netflix and dvds are all my family watches until the kids go to bed.

Ellen

Look I agree with you about the ad, but talking to and teaching your kid is your job. You’re gonna have to do this a lot. Get used to it. And no, 7 is not too young to talk about it.

Explain it, that some men love men, and some women love women, and your kid will accept that true fact. I don’t know how you’ve not explained this yet. Don’t you have any gay friends or family members?

Apparently, you’re all under the impression that I was joking. Interesting.

My kids all know what gay means. Some people are born attracted to members of the same sex. Catholics don’t think they should get married, but lots of people disagree. Is it really that big of a deal? My kids know what murder, theft, assault, drug addiction, abortion, divorce, kidnapping, etc. are all too. They seem fine. OP, try not to stress too much. This is a teaching moment and I think 7 is well old enough to learn. Better from you than someone else : )

NOPE!

You can’t say in blanket terms that 7 is “old enough” to have that discussion. Each child is different. And telling a kid that “some guys love guys and some girls love girls” would be confusing, unless you want to get into the sex discussion. Because OF COURSE people love other people of the same gender: brothers love brothers, sisters love sisters, moms love daughters, dads love sons, David loved Jonathan, etc. Growing up in a Catholic family, the OP son probably associates marriage with mommies and daddies and having babies. It’s not a simple as “some boys love other boys” and you know it!

Seven years is about the normal time for this issue to be addressed. You’re going to have to address it eventually because the world is full of people who think this way. I would just say that there are alot of people in the world who don’t understand what marriage is and why it is so important. Some men and women think that promising to always live together is the same thing as marriage and that you can “marry” anyone you like, whether they are a man or a woman, but as Catholics we know that marriage is a vocation from God and there is alot more to it than just living together. I think something like that is an appropriate response for that age.

A child is old enough when they notice the issue and ask about it. I was probably about seven why I asked my mom why Uncle Randy didn’t get married and have kids.

Thats exactly what I mean. Whats wrong with keeping a 1st grader innocent!!

None of the responses to you indicated a joke but rather a rude person.
Your post was sarcastic and made fun of the original poster for her concerns, just giving you my (name removed by moderator)ut with all Christian Charity. God bless.

No one has to ‘accept’ or ‘tolerate’ evil.

And it’s everywhere these days. Plastered over magazine covers, shoved in our faces on tv and movies.

And it’s our fault. Too little, too late.

Unfortunately, the secular media dominates most advertisements, movies, shows, etc and it is quite sad as sometimes some shows might be worth watching. I think it’s time we decide what our children should and should not be exposed to at the appropriate time. Personally, I only rent from www.piusmedia.com or buy the old shows on DVD. This allows you as a parent to decide what is/is not appropriate. This may seem drastic, but it’s worth it until they are ready to understand.

Blessings to you,

The trick is to explain it in little bits throughout time before the kids see it in a commercial. You can explain how the Catholic view of marriage is different from the secular view without having to talk about sex. If your child asks is gays can have children, you can easily explain, “No son, babies can only come from a mommy and a daddy.” without having to describe various sex acts. At any rate, even if they are twelve before they ever encounter a homosexual relationship, they are going to see many things in the world that are counter to Catholic teachings. If you teach them what we believe, chances are that they will identify those things as sinful and reject them.

I don’t think anyone took your original comment as a “joke”.
True.

Also, the commercial was not talking about how they have a bad life. My son just asked why a man is married to another man. The point being is if it was Pro-Life or Pro-traditional marriage it would be pulled on T.V.

I understand that it must be really hard to be gay. I did not make the rules though God did. You do not have to “act” on your sin. It would be like someone having a commercial about “its great to be a drug addict”. There are some members of CAF that I have met on here that have homosexual tendencies and they have a single, celibate, holy life!! Those I applaud.
