About the Churches being broken into…

I have never heard of a Perpetual Adoration Chapel being broken into. I had the hour of 12 - 1 am for a time, and it was dark and spooky outside. I was the only one in the Chapel, except for Jesus. If these chapels can stay open 24-7, frankly, I cannot see any reason why the Church cannot be unlocked during the day, until 10:00 pm. No reason whatsoever. As far as the bunk about being social after Mass. That is ridiculous. The lack of courtesy and disrespect for the people who are trying to pray after Mass is unbelievable. But, these people cannot exit the church quietly, they have to make all the noise they can, and stand around in the pews yukking it up. I’m sick and tired of it.

Interesting topic.

As far as I understand, the Lord remains with us for 15 mins after communion so it would be an ideal time for thanksgiving
Uhhhhhh… where did you come up with exactly 15 minutes that the Lord stays with us after communion?

Takes that long for the bread and wine to be broken down in the stomach to the point where they are no longer identifiably bread and wine. When the accidents of bread and wine cease, Christ’s Real Presence ceases to be in them. Hence He’s in visible crumbs of Host but not invisible ones.

You wouldn’t want Our Lord going any further down the digestive tract now, would you?

Never really thought about it honestly… 🤷

This is my favorite part:

Once Saint Philip Neri noticed that a parishioner usually left the church immediately after receiving Holy Communion. To correct him, he told two acolytes to accompany the man with lighted candles as he walked home. The people in the streets stared in surprise. When the man returned to St. Philip to ask why, St. Philip replied, “We have to pay proper respect to Our Lord, Whom you are carrying away with you. Since you neglect to adore Him, I sent two acolytes to take your place.” Realizing his fault, the man knelt and made proper thanksgiving after Holy Communion.

It is a fine thing if a person, who feels interiorly moved to do so, wishes to stay after Mass and extend his or her thanksgiving to God awhile longer. It would also be great if people would leave the Church in silence, out of respect for those praying and, of course, because it is the House of God. However, I think it wrong to place this expectation of an extended thanksgiving on the congregation as a whole. I, myself, usually feel that I have made a good thanksgiving immediately after Communion. Sometimes I might stay after Mass to spend a bit longer in prayer if I feel so inclined or other times I might go to the adoration chapel later in the evening to make a more full and intimate thanksgiving.

Unfortunately it does happen. People break into churches and defile everything they can. Of course they start with what they know is most important to us: the Eucharist. I’ve heard of cases of statues of Jesus and Mary being peed on, fowl words being spray painted on the altar, and even worse stuff. I don’t know how people can be that angry and hateful. 😦

The most evil attacks the most good. Better the church close early and a few people sent to pray at home rather than leaving something so valuable open to such grotesque treatment.

I am able to drop into a weekday morning Mass at the best parish in the city on my way to work a couple of days a week.

The thing is, I absolutely have to leave the same second the Priest goes into the Sacristy and head for the door, the car, the traffic, the lights, the noise, etc. and keep my eye on the clock. I can get to work with 2 or 3 minutes to spare, but it’s a rush to do it. I feel a little awkward hurrying out like that, so soon after Communion.

Would it be better to go to Mass, offering the same intentions, and just refrain from Commnuion, or is it always preferable to reveive our Lord at every opportunity, provided one is sure one is in a state of sanctifying grace?

This file answers some issues: What if I can’t stay? our Lord understands…try to thank him at more suitable time…

When a church is broken into and damage done, the insurance rates go up for all churches What a waste of the Lord’s money.

It’s an evil, sad age, coeyannie. In our city, as in many others, gang crime and vandalism is rampant. We have several powerful street gangs who are extremely dangerous. To leave churches open would be foolish and would put innocent people in danger.

Of course we think of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and the beautiful pictures and sculptures in our churches, but I can’t help but think of the musical instruments in most church sanctuaries; the piano and organ. It only takes a few seconds to do irreparable damage with a sledge hammer.

Also, the hymnals and missalettes. So easy to trash them. Or leave them seemingly intact, but draw obscene pictures and words in them where innocent people will happen across them.

The Church has to operate in the real time and place where it is. Back in the “old days,” the Church used to lock up the Bible to prevent it from being stolen. Evil is rampant in this day and age, and to ignore it would be foolhardy.

But remember, you can pray to Jesus anywhere, anytime. It’s wonderful to pray to Him in the Blessed Sacrament, I know (our church has a 24 hour Adoration Chapel accessed by a key punch code). But He is omniscient and always willing to hear your prayers.

Before Katrina our church was left opened during the day and several of us had keys so if someone needed or wanted to enter later they could call and we would open up for them. We had been broken into at night once - they a bottle or two of wine and took the suggestion box - not knowing the poor box or the candle box were the ones with a few dollars in them. Considering what they took we knew they were not Catholic or if they were they never attended church. I think more of the churches in New Orleans had been broken into and had more loss and damage than we did. A few even had attacks on parishioners who may have been in adoration.

I tend to arrive early to prepare for Mass, rather than stay after Mass. Once the Mass is ended, I leave. I can always make my thanksgiving at my Bible study class where we pray before our discussion, or at home if I go to the Vigil Mass. I do like to arrive at the church about 20 minutes before Mass starts to pray and get myself into the right frame of mind to unite my offering with that of the priest and to eliminate distractions which may cause me to not focus on worshipping God.

At my OLD Church, lots of people would leave straight from the Communion line!! 😦

I like that. Staying and praying my thanks. I think I’ll try that. We have 5 kids and my daughters fiance and his brother, I’ll see if we can. Our church is also noisy afterwards, but with 9 of us sitting and praying it makes for quite a sight! maybe we’ll start something?

Oh and our church has a touch pad for coded entry. On the side entrance. So everyone gets a code so we can be in the church after hours for Adoration or for quiet time in the church.Yep our church is on the bad side of town. Old nieghborhoods.

Our Lord will be very happy, indeed! His words revealed to St. Faustina Kowalska in a private revelation, explains it all: “My great delight is to unite myself with souls…When I come to a human heart in communion, my hands are filled with graces which I want to give to souls. But souls do not pay attention to me: they leave me to myself and busy themselves with other things. They do not recognize love. They treat me as a dead object.”

Here are some set prayers you can try: catholictradition.org/Eucharist/prayers4-1c.htm

And these considerations from St. Josemaria can also help: escrivaworks.org/book/christ_is_passing_by-point-92.htm

Hey thank you for those prayers
catholictradition.org/Euc…rayers4-1c.htm

I already have them:D I thought you were suppose to say them right after Communion:p Because my book of prayers say to pray them “after receiving” so I do.I didn’t know they meant after Mass:blush:

. “There is no prayer more agreeable to God, or more profitable to the soul,” said another Doctor of the Church, St. Alphonsus Liguori, “than that which is made during the thanksgiving after Communion.”

This part of the OP’s quote looks to me to be talking about the time period directly after receiving communion, not necessarily after the mass has ended…it seems very appropriate to be full of thanksgiving at this time…

Peace,
Kelly
