First of all I am quite aware of the 7 Sacraments of the CC and I am not asking you what they are.

Secondly I don’t really care to hear what your thoughts are on praying to the saints I care about what the CC teaches. And it is in direct conflict with your doubts and teaching.

The gospel teaches that intercession of fellow Christians is what the saints in heaven are.

In 1 Tim 2:5 Paul says that Christians should intercede . In 1 Tim 1-4 It shows quite clearly that it is good and pleasing to God.

And it that is not enough for you and you need it POINT BLANK, You may want to read Rev 5:8 where it states quite clearly that the saints in heaven DO ACTIVELY INTERCEDE FOR US.

And for the record praying for someone is a Sacrament. For claiming to know the Church Sacraments you sure got some real bad information.

The Sacrament for praying for someone is called the Anointing of the Sick. The anointing of the Sick is where a Priest anoints a person with blessed oil and though his prayers Christ gives strength to the soul and sometimes to the body. You may want to check out Mark 6:13 to find it since you do not acknowledge it.
I think charity and a little understanding are in order here.

I am sure that bluegoat was not down-playing the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick. It is, after all, considered a Sacrament or Sacramental rite within Anglicanism. Rather, I think all he meant to say was that praying, generally speaking, is not a Sacrament but is sacramental.

And, I don’t see where he is denying that we may be aided by the Church triumphant. I think there was a misunderstanding where it was thought that God was bound to answer the prayers of his saints when in fact his saints are soley united to doing and praying for whatever God wills.

God bless!

When the Church approves of any private revelation, she isn’t saying that they are worthy of the faith we give to public revelation (Scripture and Tradition). She doesn’t even say that all Catholics are encouraged to believe or follow these revelations. All the Church’s approval says is that these revelations have been found worthy of belief and that if they inspire Catholics to greater holiness then they are free to follow them.

If these revelations have no meaning for one’s spiritual life then one is free to ignore them without fear of being branded a bad Catholic. I think this attitude is the reason for the debate.

In Christ,
Ryan
Hi Ryan, I agree that private revelation is not as authoritative as public revelation, all I’m saying is that if a Catholic ignores an accepted private revelation that turns out to be true in the end, they might be missing out on graces… but if a Catholic believes it, well that’s no problem because they’re doing so with permission from the Church 🙂

God bless

This is a great presumption upon the good will of God. It is wrong to do so.
I don’t think it’s a presumption…it’s just TRUSTING in God’s promises

for example, Jesus said that if we sincerely repent of sin, He will forgive us. If I go to Confession and firmly believe that because the priest absolved me, my sin is forgiven, is that presumption or trusting in God’s promise?

in the same way, I believe in these promises because I trust that Mary would not lie and the Church would not approve a false apparition

not because of presumption
Grace does not come from Saint Mary.
She’s not just a Saint… she’s the Mother of God. And the Catholic Church teaches that grace comes from God through her. So that’s what I believe 🙂 it’s not a point of dogma but it’s a teaching nevertheless…and many Saints have spoken of it. So I’ll just believe what my Church teaches 🙂
This is circular logic.
If it is already God’s will, no prayer is actually necessary, but it cannot be known.
I disagree, because - well we know that it’s God’s will to forgive everyone of their sins… but we still need to pray for people to convert and to ask Him for forgiveness, because if they don’t, they might not be.

I agree that we can’t know God’s will (apart from public revelation) but Mary does know it 🙂
not perhaps in a full way, but way more than any other creature
She cannot know God’s will beforehand… that is prescience.
she’s in eternity though… there’s no “beforehand”

she can ask Jesus anything
It cannot be assumed that God will always change His intentions just because He is asked, that is presumption of God.
but she prays according to His will, He doesn’t change, He just answers her prayers which are already pleasing to Him… and this helps His will be done and His Kingdom come here on earth
I agree that she is very powerful: in her humble simplicity, her meekness, her holy ways which we can attempt to emulate.
sure 🙂
This one does not resemble the Holy Theotokos, I would like to think of it as a harmless dream of an honest man, but this concept erodes the supreme powers of the Holy Trinity in the minds of men. It blurs the distinction between the Creator and the created and we must be wary.
which “one”? Do you mean this particular revelation about the promises, or the general Catholic teaching on Mary?

to me, it doesn’t at all blur the distinction between God and creation… Mary’s soul magnifies the Lord… she was lifted to such a high place to glorify Him… why are we talking in such ‘either/or’ terms like many Protestants? God is glorified in His creation… He is also glorified in answering Mary’s prayers, in making her Queen of Heaven… it’s all for Him
We are weak, Satan is very clever, he is the father of Lies. He is called Morning Star, Phosphoros. The Fathers of the church have specifically warned us about this, as did the Apostle.
warned us of what?

**I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by (the) grace (of Christ) for a different gospel (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be accursed! **
ok, but I don’t see “another gospel” here at all. The Catholic Church doesn’t teach “another gospel”, neither do these promises, because tehy DON’T say that Mary or the Rosary saves us, they’re saying that the Rosary is a good way to come to Mary so that she may lead us to her Son, and HE will save us. This is the same NT Gospel and Mary was part of it from the beginning
As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let that one be accursed! Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.
Gal 1 6:10
**… And what I do I will continue to do, in order to end this pretext of those who seek a pretext for being regarded as we are in the mission of which they boast. For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
**2 Cor 11 12:15
sure, but that doesn’t correspond to what we’re talking about at all

before accusing people of believing in a false gospel you should first show that they do
And in all the writings of the fathers and the Apostles there is never once a mention of some great ministry of the Holy Theotokos to speak for God, or make His promises. This all came much later, hundreds and hundreds of years later. In fact, Saint Dominic himself lived almost 1,200 years after Jesus Christ (that is approximately 48 generations of Christians). That means a lot of Holy Masses (plus Confessions, Confirmations and other sacraments), a lot of Homilies, a lot of divine praises, a lot of good and holy works transpired before this new teaching came among us. A lot of martyrs and other saints were raised up by the church. A lot of souls were saved by God’s holy church, the Received Teaching saves souls.
Mary was spoken of very highly in the early Church

Some things about her we only found out later as teh Holy Spirit lead the Church into “all truth”

but none of those ideas contradicted what the Church has always taught… I’m sure the Apostles knew it all

there’s a lot of symbolism in Scripture about Mary… for example, we can see in Rev 11-12 that she’s the Ark of the New Covenant

and just look at this part in 1 Kings 2 in the Old Testament. It’s a symbol of Mary’s role:
So he continued, “Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
18 “Very well,” Bathsheba replied, “I will speak to the king for you.”
19 When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat down at his right hand.
20 “I have one small request to make of you,” she said. “Do not refuse me.”
The king replied, “Make it, my mother; I will not refuse you.
It is unwise to take the various ‘apparitions’ and ‘messages’ and link them together into some system of Salvation.
huh? it’s not a system of Salvation… we believe we’re saved by Christ. We just believe that Mary leads us closer to Him. That’s nothing new.
It is not the received teaching and the Holy Apostles (as well as Saint Mary of Nazareth), who lived and spoke with Jesus on this earth… those who left us the teachings of our Christ… the authors of the Holy Gospels would not recognize it.
the idea that Mary is our Mother and prays for us and leads us closer to God, and that her prayers are effective, is not apostolic? I beg to differ…
The Age of Revelation ended with the death of the last Apostle, and no matter how much you or I would wish it otherwise, that has been the irrefutable case.
the age of public revelation is over, but not private revelation

God bless

Where does saying that Christ hears the prayers of the Saints ever mean he is bound to them. I never said just because Christ hears the prayers of the Saint ever meant he was bound to them? Christ is never bound to anyone but himself.

But the whole point of this whole thread is not that Christ is held bound but that he hears those prayers because they are given directly to him from the Saints. And their prayers help us. And we as Catholics know that prayer works. And when we pray and ask the Blessed Mother to help us we can be guaranteed that Christ accepts those prayers.

I have no way of knowing if my prayers are accepted by Christ or not. But I know for sure her’s are. Is that not what we are talking about?

I agree, it’s not as if God is bound to Mary or the Saints, but that He Himself made these promises possible… Mary announced them but they came from God

if her prayers are powerful it’s because He made it so 🙂

Well, our Lord did promise that whoever asks anything of the Father in his name would receive. So, I think we can say that our Lord hears and accepts our prayers. But, we know that the prayers of a righteous person avails much so it goes without saying that our Lady’s prayers are certainly very powerful.

“Open to us, O Mary, the gates of paradise, since Thou hast its keys.”

St. Ambrose (c. 340-397 A.D.) Bishop, Father, Doctor of the Church

'Mary is the key to the gates of Heaven. ’

‘Through you, Most Holy lady, all glory, honour, and holiness vouchsafed to the human race from Adam to the last ages has been granted, is being granted, will be granted to apostles, prophets, martyrs, and all the just and humble of heart.’

‘O Most Holy Virgin, receive us under thy protection if thou wouldst see us saved, for we have no hope of salvation but through thy means.’

St. Ephrem of Syria (c. 306-373) Deacon, Father, Doctor of the Church, ‘the Harp of the Holy Spirit’

“Thou, O Lady, were filled with grace, so that thou might be the way of our salvation and the means of ascent into the heavenly kingdom.”

St. Athanasius the Great (c. 293-373) Bishop, Father, Doctor of the Church

'Sinners receive pardon by the intercession of Mary alone. ’ [this does not mean without Jesus, to anyone so antagonistic to read it that way]

‘Hail, Mother of God and of us all, ‘heaven,’ where God dwells, ‘throne,’ from which our Lord dispenses all grace, ‘fair daughter, Virgin, honor, glory, and firmament of our Church,’ assiduously pray to Jesus that in the day of judgment we may find mercy through thee, and receive the reward prepared by God for those who love Him.’

St. John Chrysostom (c. 374-407) Bishop, Father, Doctor of the Church

No man is delivered or preserved from the world-wide snares of Satan except through Mary; and God grants His graces to no one except through her alone.

St. Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople (c. 644-732)

The quotations go on and on like this, from East and West, North and South…

The Mariology of the Church is all devoted to Jesus Christ, through Mary… and honoring Him by honoring her, because it pleases Him to show how many graces He has given through His mother, who is celebrated in Heaven and Earth forever, and written of in the scriptures.

It is the kind of great love one can safely have when there is no danger of mistake in it. And the Church makes no mistake.

We love Mary because of what God has done for her, because of who she is. He shows us His love shining at its brightest in Mary, she is the model of purest holiness for us, in Christ Jesus.

The promises of Heaven… from the Lord… from Our Lady… are nothing compared to Heaven itself… and what it is like to live there with them, and behold their love and the Heavenly court… Eye has not seen…

No, that is not what I said. I said that praying with the expectation that one will get what one wants (if I do this, that will happen) is the same logic that is used in the practice of magic. You need to read more carefully. Perhaps not reading carefully is why you keep changing what you claim the promises mean?
I have not changed what my claim has been about the Rosary. It has been you and the one other person who have continually brought up diferent subjects and put words in my mouth since the begenning of the thread in an attempt to confuse people. Both of you since the begenning have made irrational conclusions and said things that were not mentioned by me like “you need to pray the Rosary in order to be saved.”

Well if i pray to God and have the expectation that my uncle for example, will heal and God will hear my prayer, is that magic? Like always you never make sense or don’t have a clear point.
THis is an incomplete understanding of what magic is. Don’t go to dictionaries to understand something like this, it’s like going to a dictionary to get a theological explanation of the Trinity. It is not what they are meant for.
If this is an incomplete understanding of what magic is, can you please give us that understanding please? It seems that you have a very deep understanding of magic and I wonder why? hmmmmmm…sounds very suspicious…

Lets see what you have to say and if you fall under my trap.😉

There is a way to know if your prayers are accepted by Christ. Here is how you will know:

7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

John 15:7

Hopes this help you and God bless you.🙂

This is where you are wrong.

You are assuming that God made these ‘promises’ possible. You don’t really know, by the same logic people can contend that God made Satan’s lies possible because He allows them, or that God makes your dreams possible because He allows them… God made angels appear to Muhommed and Joseph Smith because He allows them… God makes starvation and privation possible because He allows them. In other words, just because people make these claims is no assurance that they have come from God, these promises can come from any source.

And this ‘Mary’ is not even humble enough to be the Holy Theotokos.

What we do know is that nothing like this was ever accepted in the church in the past “do this prescribed set of activities… and in the future a supernatural power will assure that you get what you need to go to heaven”

If this was from God, it would have been in the Gospels at the very least, because it does an end-run around the entire Gospel message. As it is, this does not appear in the church anywhere, it reminds me of Montanism, which was so attractive to Tertullian.

I think (I hope, at least) that your church’s approval of this apparition is generally misinterpreted Catholics like you. If it has not been then I can see why we have so many problems between our churches, and why reconciliation between us is such a remote, and fading, possibility.

I am a relatively older person here, and I have prayed many rosaries myself, but I never gave these promises any thought, I ignored them and I would urge everyone to do likewise, for the reasons I have already expressed.

I think the readers here have been sufficiently warned, may God bless you.

thanks but since I’m Catholic, I’ll let the Church tell me what is right and wrong 🙂 if I agreed with Orthodox view of Mary, I’d be Orthodox.

sure, but the Church has approved these promises so they are very probably from God, and the ‘fruits’ show they’re from God, and the writings of the Saints suggest this too. Also, considering the lives of St Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche, it’s VERY unlikely that they were deceived.
And this ‘Mary’ is not even humble enough to be the Holy Theotokos.
it doesn’t say that she’s not humble… in her humility, God raised her to the highest place, even above the Angels
What we do know is that nothing like this was ever accepted in the church in the past “do this prescribed set of activities… and in the future a supernatural power will assure that you get what you need to go to heaven”
what about the Eucharist and us having life in us?

this isn’t some unindentified “supernatural power”…this is Mary, the Mother of God and our Mother
If this was from God, it would have been in the Gospels at the very least, because it does an end-run around the entire Gospel message. As it is, this does not appear in the church anywhere, it reminds me of Montanism, which was so attractive to Tertullian.
there are MANY things that we both believe that are not explicitly said in Scripture… that’s why we’re not sola scriptura

but we CAN see that Mary has a high role in Scripture

and actually, I believe this point about the promises IS in the Bible… even in the Gospels… what about the wedding at Cana?? Mary asked Jesus to perform a miracle, and He did it 🙂
I think (I hope, at least) that your church’s approval of this apparition is generally misinterpreted Catholics like you.
“misinterpreted Catholics like you”? um…
If it has not been then I can see why we have so many problems between our churches, and why reconciliation between us is such a remote, and fading, possibility.
it’s actually because you disagree with the Papacy, filioque, etc
I am a relatively older person here, and I have prayed many rosaries myself, but I never gave these promises any thought, I ignored them and I would urge everyone to do likewise, for the reasons I have already expressed.
I think the readers here have been sufficiently warned, may God bless you.
ok, you have warned us. 🙂 but I think I’ll believe what the Church teaches…and I see no problem with these promises.

I don’t want to debate this anymore, I see this is going around in circles.

God bless you

Hesychios… Michael…

I think you need to open your heart to the possibility there’s more to this than your own point of view… especially since your own Patriarchs and saints disagree with you on so many of the details, and are not afraid to praise the Mother of God in ways you are afraid to.

I hope when you’re away from the heat of the discussion you think about that. The people here do not do what you are so afraid of, rather they go by a route of love which you could see if you wished to look at it and find that it was possible. 😃

The idea that all communion with Heaven and her saints is cut off… is not something that has always been in the Church East or West. Because love is not so easily silenced, and with discernment and humility, it can be experienced.

Not exactly. Thy kingdom come THY WILL be done, on earth as it is in heaven. It is not our will it is our Lords will. And our Lord does hear all of our prayers but does not accept all of them. Not according to scripture. Try reading the last chapter of Job. The Lord accepted Jobs intercesson for his Friends but did not accept Jobs friends prayers. In order for our Lord to accept our prayers we must be in a state of Grace and we must repent our sins. We can be guaranteed that The Blessed Mother and the Saints are in a state of Grace. That is why we know that their Prayers are accepted.

This is incorrect. One does not have to be in the state of grace for ones prayers to be acceptable. Though a soul may not be in the state of sanctifying grace which merits heaven, God will give actual graces to souls who, though in mortal sin, respond to his call for conversion.

From what I understand, when one is in a state of grace God always hears one’s prayers to some degree, because one is a friend of God, but when one is not, He may or may not listen.

For him not to listen would be generally because of bad motivations for prayers. For Him to listen would be because of mercy, grace, others prayers… etc.

When His Holy Spirit is listened to in such a person calling that person to repentance, one would of course expect prayers moved from such graces to be heard since He Himself prompts them. 🙂

When one is in a state of grace, and also more meritorious than others, one starts achieving greater things through prayer… like the saints, whom from a single prayer effects miracles with which people less loving of God would have to pray a lifetime for.

I think this is putting it all a bit simplistically though, I do not thoroughly understand it – and I do not want to discourage prayer at all for people who are in sin… they need to pray to come out of it… and start establishing a relationship with God. He highly encourages them to do so… and the angels rejoice more than anything else in Heaven at repentance, and pray and work for this abundantly.

No, this is not really very accurate. God hears all prayers. God even answers all prayers (that is the kind of prayers that ask for an answer) in some sense. But, he does not always answer in the way the petitioner wants or expects - sometimes the answer is silence, or no.

This is also true of those in a state of Grace. God will answer their prayers, but not always positively.

The only thing we could say is an exception is the prayer “Thy will be done”. Clearly, God always carries out his own will. In this case, the petitioner has aligned himself completely with God’s will, even if he doesn’t know what that will is, he will accept it. A person in a state of Grace is likely to make these kinds of prayers, so we could say that in a way such a persons prayer is always answered, but not because God conforms to her will, but because she conforms to God’s.

The difficulty is that even a person in a state of Grace, who is enjoying the beatific vision in Heaven, does not know God as He Is in his entirety. A human can only know God according to her own nature, that is human nature. So to say that such a person can always completely discern God’s will or plan is not always accurate, even if she has a much clearer vision than we do.

It says in the Bible “the prayer of a righteous man avails much” 🙂

not all prayers are the same… some are more meritorious than others

it’s true that we can’t know God entirely, but Mary though human in nature was raised above the Angels by grace. So she knows God better than any other ‘finite’ being ever can. It’s very possible that He communicates HIs will to her when she intercedes for the world.

although Mary is human, she is “full of grace” which means that grace has raised her above any other creature, in that she is God’s masterpiece

God bless
