The 2018 FIFA World Cup

Not a good game, on the whole. On two occasions, at least, the referee seemed to have lost control. England deserved to win, though. It was a fair result, I thought.

Now we’re waiting for the quarter-finals on Friday and Saturday. The last eight countries are six from Europe and only two from South America.

Fri. – France vs. Uruguay, Brazil vs. Belgium
Sat. – England vs. Sweden, Russia vs. Croatia

Not even a football fan and haven’t watched any other matches this World Cup but I’m pleased. Thought for certain we were going to lose.

At least they won, beggars can’t be choosers. And via a penalty shoot out. I think they have a good shot at getting past Sweden into the semifinals. At that point they will have a lot of momentum. I agree it was not a great game, but England looked the better side when all is said and done. I was quite alarmed after Columbia got the late goal and really started to take over, but England then seemed to calm down and recover enough to make it through to the penalties. I like the fact that they put the penalty anxiety thing to rest. (I was guessing England would win on penalties right at the start of the extra time.) It was time. I don’t feel I know this team - I miss Lineker, that era. I just am not as connected this time around, though that might come. Not a fan of the Maradona sniping against the referee or the England players either. The Columbia team was worse at the diving, fouling, bullying than England. That is not anything new either. Anyway, a good result, no matter what happens from here. I will continue to watch and support England, but I do like France too. Brazil is alive and looking good. I am afraid they will knock out France assuming France gets past Uruguay but I don’t know how the draw works. Russia v Croatia will be interesting too.

France 2, Uruguay 0. Before the World Cup started, we heard a lot about how Pogba was the star player in the French team. But we don’t see much of him in the games. He seems to have been pretty much eclipsed by Mbappé and Griezmann. Griezmann is amazingly accurate in his long-distance kicks.
 
Nicely done against Uruguay. I actually felt sorry for them on that second goal. France looked a little lazy and disorganized for the first 10-15 minutes - I was thinking they went in too confident, full of themselves. That is just about the biggest danger for any team at this point. Thankfully they got into it and played, topped Uruguay fair and square. Earned it what with all the fouls. I think Brazil and Belgium could be a surprisingly good match - I hope so. Now that France is in the semi-finals I am more focused on the next game. I think Belgium would be the better option frankly. Also I don’t think England should underestimate Sweden, being a little wobbly themselves. I can see that one going either way, no question. I think Russia on paper is weaker than Croatia but that match will be electrifying, even if it is a slug/foul fest.
