I decided to go see it. Granted it is not historically accurate in many ways. However, that was not the point of the movie. The point was that those who love liberty and justice must fight those who desire to inflict mass tyranny. The muslims are correct in seeing it as being critical of them.
The Spartans, for all their faults, are clearly representing western civilization and freedom. The Persians are…well…Persians. Not much has changed. As in modern islamic Iran they represent the “hordes from the east” who wish to impose universal slavery. There are traitors in the west who are willing to sell out their own people to the invaders. To one Leonides says “may you live forever” in other words may your shame last for eternity. Xerxes demands one thing…submission. And what is that? Yep, that’s what islam means. It ain’t subtle folks.
Despite it’s historical errors and some questionable scenes this is the kind of film the islamicists are terrified of. They know if we produce films like this we could sway world opinion. Remember back in WWII? We won not just on the battlefield, but in the media. We can do it again with films like this. I would make some changes in it myself, but at least they got one thing right-we are the good guys.
