I agree that in those disputed books there is instances of praying for the dead. However nowhere inthe entire bible does it say to pray to anyone other than God. Christ taught us this:
Matt 6:9-13
[9] Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
[10] Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
[11] Give us this day our daily bread;
[12] And forgive us our debts,
As we also have forgiven our debtors;
[13] And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
So that issue is the main thing that keeps people away. Perhaps there wouldn’t be so many denominations if that practice was reformed?

I say we all know there isn’t 30,000 different denominations.
