Is there ever going to be a point where Catholics stop propagating this falsehood?

so how many do you think there are?? Would you classify Catholics and Assembly of God as one denomination??? Or don’t you believe in organized religion??? Why do you think it 33,000 denominations is a lie???

Clear this up for us - how many different sets of beliefs are held by Protestants and other “bible-only” believers throughout the world? Give us a number.

at last count the source you all pull the 33,000 number from states about 8-9000. Plus 250 catholic or so and about 900 orthodox if my memory serves me right…
So if thats your source then we must say there are 200+ catholic as well.
Furthermore I don’t believe in organized religion, if you want to know what HE said read the book.

how many different sets of beliefs to 200+ catholics have?

Why were there multiple canons long before the schism?

Excuse me!!! I do read the Bible every day. The Douay-Rheims and the Latin Vulgate. It isn’t just a book. Can you give a legit source and documentation on your theory??? There is only one Catholic denomination. Why don’t you believe in organized religion??? Faith without works is dead works without faith is dead. Have you read the Epistle of James???

There is one (1, O-N-E) Catholic faith. Surely you have been here long enough to know that. Whether or not all Catholics believe everything taught by that one faith is really no more relevant that the fact that all Christians sin. We’re a fallen race, remember?

Anyway, why are you evading the question I asked you? This is your thread, you brought up the subject, so I ask again, how many sets of beliefs are held by the world’s Protestants and other “bible-only” believers? A number, please. If you don’t like 33,000, give us a number you do like (and you can defend).

Didn’t HE say the Church was one body?

the source you guys pick this number names around 8000 and as I mentioned 200+ catholic as well. I personally have never counted…But those who blindly state something as fact should have the info to back it, and then if you choose to accept that info as truth then you must accept everythingwithin that source pertaining to the info cited.

There is only one Catholic denomination.
From a friends post a couple years back…

We have heard people on here contend that the Catholic church was the only CHURCH prior to 1054.
They sure seemed to disagree a lot. Why would Catholics contend that the “Church” was one until Protestants divided them?

Why did certain parts of this “Church” have a different canon?
If the “Church” had authority and Sacred Tradition on its side, why all the problems?

"[Diatessaron: c. 173, a one-volume harmony of the four Gospels, translated and compiled by Tatian the Assyrian into Syriac. In Syriac speaking churches, it effectively served as the only New Testament scripture until Paul’s Letters were added during the 3rd century. Some believe that Acts was also used in Syrian churches alongside the Diatessaron [citation needed], however, Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History 4.29.5 states Tatian rejected Paul’s Letters and Acts. In the 4th century, the Doctrine of Addai lists a 17 book NT canon using the Diatessaron and Acts and 15 Pauline Epistles (including 3rd Corinthians). The Diatessaron was eventually replaced in the 5th century by the Peshitta, which contains a translation of all the books of the 27-book NT except for 2 John, 3 John, 2 Peter, Jude and Revelation and is the Bible of the Syriac Orthodox Church where some members believe it is the original New Testament, see Aramaic primacy.

Orthodox Synod in Trullo: in 692, rejected by Pope Constantine, approved Gregory Theologus’ 22 book OT and 26-book NT (excludes Revelation) and the Canons of the Apostles of the Apostolic Constitutions of which Canon #85 [18] is a list of the 27-book OT plus Judith, Sirach, 1-3Maccabees, Didache, 1-2Clement, and 26-book NT (excludes Revelation), and the Apostolic Constitutions which themselves were rejected because they were said to contain heretical interpolations.

Nicephorus: the Patriarch of Jerusalem, 806-815, in a Stichometria [19] appended to the end of his Chronography rejected Esther, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, Maccabees, Psalms of Solomon, Enoch, Didache, Barnabas, Hermas, Clement, Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of the Hebrews, 3rd Corinthians, Acts of Paul, Revelation, Apocalypse of Peter."

But “jurisdictions” or geographical boundries don’t matter to the real question. The real question is, how many different (and presumably conflicting) sets of beliefs are found among the world’s Protestants and other “bible-only” believers. For the Catholic Church, the number is precisely ONE. What’s the number for non-Catholic believers? Is it ONE or more than ONE?

This topic again? 🙂

If you search CAF for “33000 denominations”, you’ll see that this topic has come up (many times) before. One poster (PhilVaz) compiled the work of previous posters and made an article about it on his site:

bringyou.to/apologetics/a120.htm

Yes, the number 33,000 is not the best number (as the same source also lists the Catholic Church as a separate denomination for each of the 270 or so countries the Church is in). For apologetics purposes, though, even if the number is more than one, the general principle of “division” is still maintained.

Like many falsities, stopping their propagation is easier said than done. I suppose this one will stop being spread at about the same time Protestants stop saying that Catholics worship Mary. 😉

According to steve ray and tim staples they have both quoted
World Christian Encyclopedia
As the source of this.

In my opinion, then it begins with you and me.

The 33,000 is overblown, mainly because of tax purposes. This “Bible-only” church doesn’t want to be associated with one a block away, so they have to file as a separate entity. The same is true among other churches that would other-wise be the same chapter (or faith).

For that reason, I usually offer up 200-500 denominations, simply to avoid the red-herring debate about 33,000 and get to the real point.

Of course, if the 230 Catholic churches is true, its hard to hold the Latin Rite (Romanists or Papists may be a term thrown around by our Christian brothers! ;)) and the 23 rites in communion with The Church responsible for these little shoot-offs that last for 10 years and then fall by the wayside once the “new faith” splits up over whether to serve communion from one cup or a bunch of little cups.

Bottom line, if you use the “200 or so” number, then you can get past that hurdle and deal with the real problem - All Protestant Churches were started by fallible men.

Thanks J,
Now if you’d be so willing to call your brothers on the table and ask them not to propagate such an obvious lie…Then I will do the same when I see protestants doing an equally deceitful misrepresentation.😃

Sure thing. Whenever I come across this figure, I will point them in the right direction. 👍

please provide links and such with your documentation. Quoting this or that without proper documentation makes your claims questionable.

Mind your mouth Martin. We do read the Bible. All 73 books of it and I am pretty sure that I know it at least as well (though I suspect better) than you do.

You can reject organized religion if you want to but all that has done is open you up to further modern post reformation errant teachings of men.

As for your allegation that this figure is a lie, prove your case with documented sources, because I have seen the sources that agree with that and are in fact n-Cs. 🤷
