In an effort to end the Bible’s monopoly on the swearing-in procedure in the courtroom, the American Civil Liberties Union is now suing the state of North Carolina.

A lawsuit has been filed in Superior Court in Wake County, N.C., on behalf of the organization’s statewide membership of approximately 8,000 individuals of many different faiths, including Islam and Judaism.

“The government cannot favor one set of religious values over another and must allow all individuals of faith to be sworn in on the holy text that is in accordance with their faith,” said Jennifer Rudinger, Executive Director of the ACLU-NC. “By allowing only the Christian Bible to be used in the administration of religious oaths in the courtroom, the state is discriminating against people of non-Christian faiths.”

Current law mentions laying one’s hand on the “Holy Scriptures,” which officials heretofore have interpreted as meaning the Bible.

The ACLU seeks a court order clarifying that the existing rule is broad enough to allow the use of multiple religious texts.

“In the alternative, if the Court does not agree that the phrase ‘Holy Scriptures’ in North Carolina state statute must be read to permit texts such as the Quran, the Old Testament and the Bhagavad-Gita in addition to the Christian Bible, then the ACLU-NC asks the Court to strike down the practice of allowing the use of any religious texts in the administration of religious oaths,” said a written statement from the civil-liberties group.

The swearing-in issue began last month after Muslims from the Al-Ummil Ummat Islamic Center in Greensboro sought to donate copies of the Quran to courtrooms in Guilford County.

The gift was rejected by the county’s top two judges, noting an oath based on the Quran was not legally binding.

I don’t know:confused: These guys are beyond rediculous, they are determined to strip the country of Christianity and morals too.

Atheist: I swear on all my guts…
does he really think he’ll be disembowelled if he lies in court?

Wiccan: I swear on a flying broom…

I think we can get them…
Take the case to trial… They can’t be hypocrites and testify as they’d have to be sworn in 😛

I dont get the attack here…how is the ACLU “at it again”?

They arent trying to eliminate any religious swearing in (if I am undersyanding correctly) they are just trying to ensure that people of different faiths have a right to swear in on their OWN religious books…100% American to me. Exactly how is this trying to get rid of Christianity if the people involved are of different faiths to begin with?

Do you think they should be FORCED to swear in on a Christian bible if they arent Christian…ie…just shut up and stop complaining and follow OLD protocol?

Do you think they should be denied a job if they arent Christian?

What am I missing here?

Or do you people subscribe to the Ann Coulter theory of forcibly converting other faiths to Christianity?

I support the ACLU in this particular case 100% How dare someone try to force a Muslim, Buddist, etc to swear in on a book that is meaningless to their particular faith. Its America… its DIVERSIFIED.

I don’t get it either. Allowing Moslems to use the Qur’an isn’t attacking the country’s supposed Christian morals.

Je ne pense pas que vous êtes américain. Êtes-vous sûr vous êtes-vous catholique ?

I’m sorry ShroudMan, but I must disagree with you. I have spent some time reading the Quran to find out what it says (to better be able to dialogue with the Muslims who come to this forum), and no matter how much respect I give them as people, I would not accept an oath sworn upon that book. The diversity of this country is one thing, but there is only one book which tells the truth about God, and if we are asking him to witness our oath, then we should use that book. The Bagavad Gita, the Quran, the Upishands, the Vedas, etc. are all false teachings and as such they should hold no place of honor in a court seeking the truth.

If someone told you that Christ wasn’t God would you just shrug and tell them that they were entitled to their own opinion? This is the same type of situation, do we just sit here and allow them to say that all religions are the same?

I wonder if swearing on the BIBLE makes anyone, other then people of faith, tell the truth. People of Faith do not need it as they would tell the truth anyway. If a juror gives more weight to the words spoken by someone that takes the oath on a Bible then that juror is also a Person of Faith IMHO.

I think the issue is that it is again taking the historical use of Christian material out of our lives and denying our country it history. Not the fact that it makes people tell the truth.

They want a totaly secular society.

The point is if we allow them to relativize religion so that none is better than another, then they can easily proceed to the next step of completely removing the religious aspect altogether. Once more, can we afford to say silent on this?

I wonder how upset and vocal liberals and leftists who profess to be Catholic are going to be on this issue.

This is really insane. How can one object to allowing a Muslim to swear on the Qur’an? Do we really want the government to decide which texts are holy and which ones aren’t? Maybe the government will decide that only the King James Bible can be used in court. Do we really want the state imposing religion on us? If it does, the religion isn’t going to be Catholicism.
