Howdy!

Glad to have discovered this thread.

I’m a big fan of InuYasha, Wolf’s Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ōkami to Kōshinryō (Spice and Wolf/Wolf and Spice), and DNAngel.

as far as movies go, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are personal faves.

Out of all of em, I’d have to say I love Inuyasha the most. Princess Mononoke and Wolf’s Rain second.

I would argue that Japan is more Christian than anyone realizes—even the Japanese.

It’s not anime, but do look up the history of Catholicism in Japan, especially the work of Francis Xavier, and the Japanese martyrs.
Hmmm…, Francis Xavier and the other Japanese martyrs did have a profound impact with regards to spreading Catholicism in Japan, however as history tells, Catholicism did run into a lot of problems as the years went by from the initial missions. The 17th century systematic persecutions and the general xenophobia by the shogunate dealt a huge blow to the cause of Christianity. The Japanese-Catholic author Shusaku Endo also makes a good argument about the problems that the Japanese had to face with regards to reconciling the Hellenistic Western religion that is Catholicism to the proud and rooted Eastern culture of the Japanese. If you haven’t read his books, they are good reads that give a glimpse of Catholicism in Japan. 🙂 I especially liked his book Silence.

Anybody notice how Inuyasha and the Twilight saga plot are almost identical. Bella/Kagome in love this Edward/Inuyasha. Just sustitute a vampire for a half demon. Then add a werewolf rival Koga style. The Twilight saga is really an americanized Inuyasha.
That still doesn’t change the fact that Inu Yasha came out first. 😛
I still watch Kenshin, Naruto, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sometimes but being a father of an 11 month old I am awakening to the fact that most of the shows are nothing but fighting and violence. I used to watch a lot of Anime but as the years go by I find myself being less of an anime fan.
Please, violence is good! What I wouldn’t give to do the things I’ve seen in those shows, particularly those centered on a magic theme ( oh and Yu-Gi-Oh!, yeah, I really do wish I could pwn people using a children’s card game XD).

Seriously, I’d rather watch fight scenes than hang out with a bunch of flirting zeros who read Playboy and hang out hopelessly in bars. :rolleyes:

The only thing I draw the line on is age. Violence in anime is like drinking. Don’t let a kid watch it till he/she knows reality from fantasy.

Other than that, BRING IT ON!!! >8D strikes a fighting pose
That’s a good point but I don’t really see it as an excuse to draw fanservice. Anime creators and Mangaka’s are obliged/encouraged to put fanservice in simply because it’s a big part of what sells the product to the anime fans. Where would the anime industry be without the big fandom who keeps on buying stuff and immersing themselves in the culture?

I would like to say though that in a general definition fan service would be something in the anime episode (a scene or a moment) that is unnecessary to the plot but is put there to please the viewers. Most of the time it is sexual but fan service can also be over the top mecha battles, unnecessary cute mascot placements,chibi drawings,excessive violence or excessive gore.
Agreed. I’m probably one of the very few folks on this thread who tolerate fan service. I see it can have various uses though other than the ones you mention. Sure the comedic type can be used to please the audience but there’s also a darker variety (you see this plenty on seinen manga). One of my favorite kinds of stories are those that focus on Tokyo street gang life. However, in such stories you have prostitution, pornography, even rape. Such things sicken me but seeing it all in the dark, urban backdrop of a morally woebegone city paints a pretty powerful image for me. It tells me just how far gone humanity is but even in the end, there are still some individuals in it who struggle to do the right thing.

It’s one reason why I’ve been looking for this manga called Ikebukuro West Gate Park. I can’t read it anywhere online (they don’t sell it here obviously :rolleyes:). Not even a preview. Still, knowing that the character is some thug, despite being a thug, who helps people in dire need kinda rings well someone like me who’s seen some really messed up stuff but still tries to do what’s right.
Actually a couple of anime nowadays are made offshore in other east asian/ s.east asian countries. 😃
Sure wish the one over here would pick up eh? Even they can’t do that, they could at least fix up the dubs. T_T
Yes I do. 👍
Sure wish I could just buy manga. But noooo… thanks to Erap sinking our economy, prices have gone way up and imported stuff like that is waaay beyond the budget of a middle-class college dude like me. -.-;;
Alright, I understand that there is no such thing as an original story anymore(Thank you, Prof. Scheub: african.lss.wisc.edu/faculty/scheub.htm). Does that mean that everyone needs to copy and paste ideas a la:

Choose your protagonist:
a) half-demon
b) vampire
c) wizard
d) ordinary kid who wakes up with super-powers one day

Choose your character’s motivation:
a) the girl or guy that he or she likes doesn’t know that he or she exists
b) the world is under attack by __________ and only the protagonist can save it
c) the protagonist must collect X number of _________ in order to __________
No offense man but I think you’re putting waaaaay too much pressure on the human imagination and creativity. Even non-anime shows had premises like yours (take Harry Potter and Buffy for example).

I think the key lies in what you add to the mold. The things you listed are really just that. Basic standard molds for stories. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t add your own decoration to what comes out. Furthermore, what seems overused now and what’s new can be the reverse in the near future.

It’s on my to-read list; I skimmed a precis on how Xavier’s subtle approach (dressing like an ‘important’ person because that was expected of him; learning the language and culture) won points with the Japanese leadership, but that later missionaries seemed too pushy.

What I’m talking about is the way Japanese people seem to expect self-sacrifice, honor, and not bringing shame to the family as a matter of course. It’s a fairly Catholic attitude, and since God does work in mysterious ways… 😃

Response to the guy who used OneManga.

Isn’t that illegal since the manga psoted there is not from the owners or since it has been posted without permission?

Try living in a country where poverty makes piracy another way to make a living before you judge us for that. :rolleyes: Manga over here is so overpriced, they might as well not sell them at all. Honestly, the moment a series hits a bargain bin, expect it to be gone before lunch. That’s how desperate we are in getting them.

Besides, reading manga and watching anime online has its cons to you know. In case I haven’t told anybody here yet, I don’t have internet anymore (I go to another cafe now just T_T ). I’m lucky enough to even be able to watch and read these at all (and all within the constraints of a one-hour time limit). Also, online scans can be very painful to read when the scanlators use such tiny fonts to make a text fit! >_<;;;

What I wouldn’t give to just sit in a room and turn page after page. -.-;;

Please don’t try to make excuses for theft under any circumstances. It breaks one of the Commandments.

At least for me, as long as it’s not licensed then availing of scanned manga is free promotion/marketing for the mangaka/publishing company. Why so? Because most of these manga aren’t mainstream enough to reach the other side of the shore so it’s generally free exposure. Japanese manga and anime is still primarily for the Japanese market so there are a lot of grey areas with regards to intellectual property.

Besides there are a lot of drawbacks in reading scanned mangas or subbed anime. Poor page/picture quality, poor subs/translation, dirty scans etc… comes to mind. 🙂

This situation however is slowly changing as some animation studios are already making their content available to the rest of the world the same day the broadcast is in Japan, with ready made subtitles to boot. But until Anime shifts to a truly global market then the legal issues regarding subs/scans will remain foggy.

On a side note, inasmuch as I am thankful to the N.American companies who bring anime/manga to the english speaking world I really hate the licensing structure when it comes to gaming imports at it prevents a lot of anime-based crossover games to have a western translation. Viz, Funi, etc… ruined my dreams of having an english translation of the Super Robot Wars group of games or the Jump-Ultimate Stars fighting games. :mad:

Exactly. I can barely understand how Air Gear is moving because the things the characters say make grammatically no sense whatsoever. D:

Not to mention the economy of a poor country makes it near impossible to import stuff like that unless you go to elite bookstores and stuff.

You forget that 4Kids is the prime example of why we also have low faith with regards to English dubs. -.-;;

Way to avoid the point… again and again. :rolleyes:
What escape clauses are valid for The Ten Commandments? What is a valid reason to steal a service that is not necessary to life, and that will eventually bankrupt the provider of that service?

Have you no worries about your immortal soul?

It’s not encumbent upon Catholics to defend the Ten Commandments. It is encumbent upon those who break it at whim to explain just why those Commandments don’t apply to them.

Wrong. Wrong. Oh and soooo wrong.

Not necessary to life? You start banning pirated manga, you’re gonna start banning anything pirated in general which spells bad news to anybody in this sinkhole who depends on such things to write their documents, record their accounts etc. Your line of thinking leads to that whether you like it or not. It is inevitable. Heck, many of my Literature classes depended on a pirated DVD just so we can critique a movie. What happens when manga and comics become a new topic? What then huh? :rolleyes:

Also, bankrupt the provider? LOL! Typical argument of anybody on the anti-piracy bandwagon. The Japanese couldn’t care less what comics they sell abroad. The target market has always been their own population (otherwise, we wouldn’t be struggling not only with language but also trying to relate the non-Christian worldviews of anime/manga to the Western world).

If you wanna condemn somebody, condemn any Japanese indecent enough to pirate their own products not people who do so because they couldn’t get it anywhere else in their own country. :rolleyes:

Ladies and Gentlement, Wapanese of all ages, we are set to once again incur the wrath of the Forum deities.

On a more relevant note, Funimation has licensed Bamboo Blade, which has a ridiculous enough premise to work. I’ll take a peek later.

Come on dude. I know you live in the Phillipines in all but nevertheless, to take something without permission is still stealing no matter how you sugar-coat it. It may be a small sin depending on how much and how long you do it but these small sins will pile up and eventually become grave. Don’t forget what the devil is, a thief. I wouldn’t want to do anything that would imitate him in any way.

I actually liked bamboo blade but it ended awkwardly since the manga hasn’t finished yet. So as an effect i don’t really like watching anime whose story is based on manga that’s not yet finished. This is true especially with anime that have linear storylines as opposed to episodic ones. Claymore, Kekkaishi, History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi etc… left a lot to be desired by finishing mid-volume.

I believe my fellow Pinoy tantum here has summarized all my arguments against you anti-piracy folks. It isn’t stealing when you’re not even part of the intended audience that is Japan’s local youth. They couldn’t care less if some gaijin on the internet could read their work when they’re too busy selling to ones they can actually see. :rolleyes:

And like he said, I would never dream of pirating stuff if I could ever live in Japan (far off dream that is). Why would I when the original stuff is so much better and even the average geek can afford it? As far as English stuff goes, the same situation applies. Heck I’d rather buy original North American Yu-Gi-Oh! cards than the horrid imitations they’ve printed over here. Sadly, my daily allowance says otherwise.

It’s a whole different story here where I am now. Unless you people actually start living here for the next ten years of your life, you will never realize just how less of a clue you guys have about what it means to live where pirated stuff is the best thing available here (which is sad since they have such junky quality).
