Lady and Gentlemen, we have a problem:
cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/30/japan.video.game.rape/index.html?hpt=C1

The game itself is old news, but people are going to misunderstand that all anime is like this.
puts gun to his head Uggggh!! DX bangs head repeatedly To think I’ve descended to that world a fair number of times (when I’m looking for things to practice deconstruction on). I can’t remember how many stories I’ve written (current one included) just for the sake of reversing the abhorrent depictions of rape so common in hentai. (One old story of mine had the rapist’s soul sliced out when the deal he made with the devil that allowed him to go scot-free had expired.)

I can’t say though that giving 2D fictional characters the same rights as real children is a smart move. They really aren’t real you know. Not that that makes it any less sinful… but I doubt you can convince lawmakers to make an action that bans them. I wouldn’t even be for it in fact. I find it stupid that people waste time cracking down on lolicon and hentai when there are bigger fishes in the live-action porn and prostitution industry (which exploit more real women and children than any dirty-minded doujin circle).
Well, all anime is an excuse to draw teenage girls in school uniforms with short skirts that disobey the laws of physics, but very few people will be able to tell the difference.
To be honest, I’m actually in support of lolis, cute school girls, or whatever sexual element can be found in anime. It’s one of the big things that separate it from childish cartoons.

Hentai though… good God!! DX puts gun to his head again Am I the only one here who actually goes as far as to write stories of how utterly stupid their storylines are? I go as far as to make the hentai fanboy and hentai rapist archetype a subject of GoW style beatings and mutilations.
But seriously, how in the non-denominational perdition do we draw that line in the sand when you can alllmost do the same thing in God of War 3, or enjoy the boobie-physics in Dante’s Inferno?
I’d have to say that while you may be on to something, I can’t say you cited the right games for example seeing as their women are rather repulsive. (I mean seriously, anybody who finds Cleopatra from Dante’s Inferno sexually attractive is demented.)

Maaan, this is where I wish more of my gaia friends were Catholic; we all here seem to have such different tastes!

Course…looks around I think, THINK, I’m the only girl 'round here…

I was referring to Beatrice’s gifts, actually.

I don’t think that we, as Catholics, should rule out ALL sexual themes. There should be a point where we draw that line where sexual themes for the sake of sexual themes shouldn’t be drawn or written. That would be pornography. There should be some reservation or allowance for characters, drawn or written, to bring/act out very real sexual questions, situations, and problems. We’re not Protestants, we know better. The big issue, I think, is that sexual themes in social media today don’t portray either the divine dignity of our sexuality, or portray those sexual questions, situations, and problems in an overly dramatic, unrealistic way. My goodness, yes, high school guys think about nothing but losing their virginity all day long, but do we have to obsess about it? Maybe in order to make sales…I guess.

Sadly, the xiao riben (Japanese) don’t universally have the same social norms as we do (Catholics, that is). That’s life and the world, though.

That’s why I said “Lady and Gentlemen” - 😉

And all I know are current mainstream shounen! D8 (e.g. Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, D.Gray-man, Air Gear etc.)
And for now I only know about seinen!!! (hahahahaha)

Someone was talking about monster, I like the works of Naoki Urasawa

Blessings !!!

“We’re not Protestants; we know better”

Ok, I am SO cross stitching that on canvas, because that’s the best quote I’ve heard all month!

I to believe sexual themes can be present in otherwise unquestionable material. I’m ALL for reality in fiction. It’s a reality that 30% of children are born outside of marriage, so that goes to show how many people are engaging in premarital sex. We, as Catholics, should not AGREE with the choice, but to deny that others have made that choice, to ignore it, is not going to help any. If two characters in an anime have sex, I do not disagree with it on principal, especially if the act helps the plot along, and as long as it doesn’t jump the line into being problematic or too graphic.

Hmmmm, someone here is watching any of this season’s anime?

I think that it has some of the worst series in recent times

Blessings to all !!!

What do you mean by not ruling out all sexual themes? You mean like a scene where a woman is about to be raped but the good guy rescues her just in time? Or showing how a rape victim tries to recover and perhaps even forgive what happened?

I can agree with both those scenarios, though I don’t really count in rape when I’m talking about sexual content. I just don’t count them as being in the same category.

There’s a difference between merely implying or showing that two people have had sex (such as showing they are a cohabitating couple) and showing gratuidous sexual content, like CW drama’s or something. I don’t like sex scenes in movies, where they actually show the scene and try to be artsy and stuff. With me, it’s enough to show a deep, passionate kiss, and fade to black. We all know what happened. You don’t have to go in depth about it.

With books, I STILL don’t like it to be graphic, of course, but I can stand some peotic imagery in place of the scene.

Course, back to the rape thing, I guess I can see where it would get graphic, and where to stop. One of my favorite tear-jerker books is about a boy who was kidnapped at a young age and kept as the “friend” of a MUCH older man. You know where I’m headed with this. Well, after he escapes and is back home, traumatized and mentally ill, of course, he slowly starts sharing what happened to him. The story goes into flashbacks about his experiences, but never gets graphic in their descriptions. You know exactly what he was experiencing in each scene, but it used euphemisms, avoided getting too detailed. It did a good job of toeing the line between depiction and graphic portrayel.

Meh, I couldn’t find her attractive either but that’s just the moe sucker in me talking now. 😛

True that… although I personally like to emphasize on impact so I don’t know if I should agree or disagree about your statement regarding overdramatic sexual portrayal. To be honest, rape itself is a dramatic/traumatic experience for anyone so I find it’s more likely to be underdramatic than over.

I personally find that the more heinous the deed is described, the more I would want to write about how the perpetrator is chopped up on the board.

Naw, for me, the more heinous the crime, the more I want to psycho analyze the perpetrator, see what in his life screwed him up that badly to compel him to do this.

I had SO much fun with X doing that.

Well technically, I’ve read a bit of seinen as well. 😛 I can’t remember all of them (they’re not as well-known as the mainstream), but one I certainly loved was Ubel Blatt.

There’s been one title though that I could never find in my bookstores or read online. Ever heard of Ikebukuro West Gate Park? It was originally a drama but they’ve made a manga of it some time ago. How I long to read it… I really like seinen about delinquent street life in urban Tokyo. I’m a junkie for dystopian settings (particularly modern Japanese ones).

Fufufufu… what an interesting contrast of tastes. So different yet both equally deviant, tis inspiring. :p:D;)

I see where you’re coming from though, both my sister and a friend of mine from school like psychological themes. 😉 Me, I’m just a simple-minded vigilante who liked seeing a sexual assaulter become Light’s first victim by being slammed by a truck. Ngehehehehe…

Oh believe me, there are seveal characteres I think should be given the Geass 1-2, but here’s the thing; those are usually just poorly written and badly developed characters.

A well rounded villian is not going to be just a Complete Monster. Now, I’m not saying we need to have SYMPATHY for villians, especially those who sure seem to act like complete monsters, but the antagonists that are the most wel lrounded, most interesting, they’re the three dimension ones.

Take my personal favorite, Seishirou, for instance. He’s an assassin. he’s emotionaless, manipulative. he had a sexual relationship with his own mother, and convinced a vulnerable and naive 16 year old boy to put his trust in him, fall in love with him, only to crush him, both mentally and physically. He broke that poor boy, Subaru. Subaru became mentally ill, riddled with self destructive tendencies, indifference and griefe. But due to Seishirou’s torment and near brainwashing, he was convinced that he loved Seishirou. Seishirou is one of the most vile, disturbed characters I’ve come across, but he’s written well. He’s interesting. He is legitimately and clinically sociopathic. He feels no emotion, yet at the very end, gave his life so that Subaru wouldn’t take his own life. Of course, most CLAMP fangirls just like to squee themselves over the so-called “yaoi” from this pairing, but me? It may be a canon pairing, but it’s not one based on love. It’s one based on obsession, mental illness, terror and denial.

And I’ve spent two years picking it apart, especially Seishirou. What he’s done in unexcuseable, it’s horrible, and I’m sure he’s roasting in hell for what he did (he killed PUPPIES!) but all the same, I was far more interested in trying to find out what made him tick mentally than seeing his ticker XD

Or, to use a shorter analogy, I could just say; Light and Lelouch. Though at least Lelouch kinda made up for it on the end. kinda.
