I love anime, my favorites lately have been romantic comedies. (School Rumble, Ranma 1/2)

I think it’s funny how they try to portray Catholicism sometimes. I remember seeing a teenage nun hearing confession in this one episode, where it turned out she liked the guy who confessed. lol
That reminds me. I’ve observed that when some anime portray a church they often look pretty much the same: stained glass windows, a pre-Vatican II altar, and maybe some cross or Marian statue (something like this). Sometimes they go for the Romanesque/Gothic cathedral look.

But as of yet, I’ve never seen an anime depict a church that is literally chock-full of iconography (unfortunately) or something that looks as bland as a warehouse - as many modern-day churches tend to look like (thank heavens :D).

Mm, one thing to keep in mind about anime is that it is the product of the culture of a country where Christians are a minority and are relative newcomers in their society. For that reason, it’s going to reflect the values of a society where Buddhism and Shinto (which you can think of as animism with a college education) are the predominant faiths. I think Shinto was the state religion for a while, but I’d have to double check that.
Oh yes, State Shinto, what is often considered as the state religion of the Great Japanese Empire.
As an aside, has anybody heard of the Kakure Kirishitan?

Does anyone here watch Japanese animation, aka anime? My favorite titles include: .hack//sign, any Miyazaki movie, Inuyasha, Trigun, and too many others.

Well to be honest, I’ve been reading manga a lot more lately but you know, other than medium the two are pretty much the same thing anyways.

Ack!! D8> Shimata! I went overboard! >.<;;

Ah well, anyways. If there’s anything else I might wanna add, I’m probably one of the few on these boards who tolerate fan service and violence (I’m more into the latter though be honest). No offense to anyone but if a story grips me I can’t help myself regardless of whatever else they’ve peppered it with. It’s hard, if not impossible for me to put down. I usually prefer either fantasy anime set in magical realms or modern Tokyo (particularly the high school romance variety >w<;; ).

P.S.

On an interesting note, I’m also currently watching a bit of tokusatsu on the side. 😛

It’s almost comical, sometimes, the way they goof things about Catholicism, and it’s almost refreshing to know there’s nothing mean-spirited or anti-Catholic about these goofs. They tend to use Christian imagery and ideas mostly for aesthetics or because it looks cool. I’m minded of something that was said by one of the people who created Neon Genesis Evangelion: that they used the Christian imagery and ideas because it “looked good”, and that if the series had originally been intended for release in the U.S, that they probably wouldn’t have used it (though in that case, it might not have had such an impact as it has). This is something quite old, actually: there’s stories told by some missionaries in Japan in the 1500s, who report things like people buying statues of Our Lady or carrying rosaries because they looked nice, not necessarily because they’d converted.

And yet there are Japanese martyrs and saints. With God, all is possible. He is still evangelizing everywhere.

Of course there is a lot of trash made. Yet many, many series, even if not overtly influenced by Catholicism, reflect its values far better than anything you will see on American TV outside EWTN. To deny it is to deny the power of the Holy Spirit.

Even today, there are people here who carry or wear rosaries or crosses as a fashion statement, not necessarily because they are Catholic. Some things don’t change…😉

That’s exactly what I like about anime when it uses such imagery. They make our religion appear powerful with all them knights, paladins, priests, angels, exorcists etc.

Although I do admit that it’s not spared from the sexualization and fetishism that runs in anime (bangs head out of guilt), mix it up with action and a good story and you’ll have me wishing that life on this planet was more like that. O.O

Frankly I’d really like it if angels and demons would be something I could actually see for real instead of mere ambiguous presences.

Alexander Anderson suggests you convert to Catholicism.

I’m a big fan of Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Bleach which I’m trying to keep up with right now. In the past I watched Inuyasha a bit, but then I found out they ended up terminating the anime without reaching a conclusion so I was just like meh, what’s the point? 🤷

Also, after watching the whole series and then the movie, I need someone to explain to me why Neon Genesis Evangelion is supposed to be good. :o

That is so true. I spent my childhood in Mexico, so I grew up with anime. lol
Is it really that popular over there? That’s interesting. My only experience is when I went to spend a week at an orphanage in Mexico on a mission trip, and the kids there would watch the Spanish dub of Dragonball Z. I have another friend from Mexico though, and as a kid she said she was pretty obsessed with Dragonball Z as well.

Mou… Urusai! Urusai! Urusai! DX

(Sorry, just had to say it. :p:o)
B-b-but I already am! D8 Here, ask Rosette-chan!

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

(Assuming she doesn’t shoot you first, she doesn’t look happy for some reason >.>;; )

I think Rosette has to be the most Christian-seeming character in anime. Well, next to Vash anyway.

Yeah, you know how popular Spongebob is here, that’s how popular anime is over there.

And the dubs are much better over there, I don’t know if Japanese just translates better to Spanish than English or what.

A few years back Dragonball Z was all the rage, they had action figures, blankets, piñatas, you even got DBZ toys inside bags of chips. I mean you couldn’t go out in the streets without seeing Goku.

Impossible task!

I would like to pitch Ikari Shinji into a steel cage with Hiei and then have him WHINE at Hiei for an hour.

😃

MOST Catholic character in anime: Alphonse Elric, FMA. What a good little Catholic boy he is. Even comes dressed as a knight.

I gotta agree there. Alphonse was a great conscience for his brother.

Too bad his brother is agnostic. At least, I think he became agnostic towards the end of the original anime. Haven’t seen the new version yet.

Seems to me as though Ed-kun begins to believe. I loved the twist at the end (which I won’t reveal due to spoilers) as to why alchemy doesn’t work in ‘our’ world.

In the new FMA, there is a scene where Ed and Al are talking to each other and they both agree that neither of them believes in the existence of God.
