I drew this today. What do you guys think?
Good coloring. Continue trying to see figures in terms of mass, and not line—move forward always!

I watched a painting show today and the artist repeated that everything is made up of several basic shapes.

animelyrics.com/anime/kenshin/
This is a neat site. It has video, where available, and lyrics for anime songs for many anime. This was just a favorite of mine. I like her voice and it’s almost '80s Cyndi Lauperish.
Oh, good ol’ animelyrics-dot-etc!

Which was this—hanbun? Hanbun sounded peculiar at first because of the orchestration and time signature but it’s now one of my faves!

I even know some of the lyrics.

With how erotic some japanese animation can be, and how addictive it can become, is it similar to the addiction of porn or masturbation?

I would rather not be so blunt about it. But what ARE the reasons why some guys find some japanese animations so fascinating?
I am also not grouping together all anime because I know that there are anime which are perfectly fine. But is there a limit to the Kind of anime one should watch?

At least its just 2D and not real people (as compared to many live-action shows on western TV). Besides, many classical myths (Greek in particular) had as much fan service.

Because even in ecchi series, the plot and the characters have a higher chance of making sense compared to stories of anthros going about hitting each other with hammerspace junk.

Not limit, just a sense of taste and decent time management. The same with cartoons.

Some of you might cringe, but a sample of Sony’s Rurouni Kenshin dub: youtube.com/watch?v=agEMhv9a68I&feature=PlayList&p=48AC8E235004C9EC&playnext_from=PL&index=0 IMO though I feel, some character name changes notwithstanding, that the Sony dub is far better than what Media Blasters did, or maybe it’s because I’ve seen this dub like more than 4 times already (it has practically become the staple of Studio 23 here in the Philippines). Yes, I know Sailor Kenshin will like this dub. 😛

OT: Lost Wanderer, you awake at this time of hour? Not that I’m complaining since I’m awake myself (3:45am here as I type this). 😃

Just don’t see erotic anime, I guess. Those they play on TV don’t seem to be that. Bleach pushes it, I suppose, but the heros of it are not gawkers. Disrespect for elders and being too eager to fight people tend to be the vices of most anime heros. I’m glad there’s no blasphemies on the Cartoon Network translations, except maybe a rare OMG. Occasionally, one will say “Oh Lord” in a vain way, even on Catholic tv, which I think is inappropriate.

Yeah I gotta send my ototo to school early and we live very far away. That and I’d rather use the computer when its just me. I’m more likely to write something in this quiet atmosphere. :o

When talking about what causes the addiction or temptation to view such anime, the point that it is “merely and only” in 2D doesn’t seem to address the core issue.
It doesn’t matter in what way certain material is presented to the viewer, if it causes the same problem. I am addressing the effect it has on a Christian.
And if there should be a general concensus on the matter?

I’m not justifying the addiction bit. I’m just pointing out that ecchi is an element of fiction, anime isn’t the only one.

The thing is if we’re going to talk about eroticism in fiction, we might as well place the same standards upon classic myths. It can be argued that they too can have the same effect seeing as how they have the same sexual content. For all we know, they probably had the same effect on the people’s of the ancient world as ecchi anime now has on otaku.

Then are either of them right?
Even if a story of fiction may be considered a classic?

All right. Now that we have established a question. My answer is that it’s quite the gray area. Right now, I lack the time to elaborate (my little bro’s awake now see >_>;; ). I’ll explain later.

For starters though, you have to go back to what I said about it all being fictional. The gravity usually from ecchi and soft porn is that it violates the dignity of persons by objectifying them. The problem in fiction though is there is no real human being to reduce. There’s still an element of inducing lust which makes it remain a sin, but you can say the gravity isn’t as much as compared to those that make use of actual people.

You could read pornographic fiction and get worked up, though. Besides, when anime artists want to draw a naked body, they are anatomically correct.

So here you have explained part of the reason for why you claim there to be a “gray” area?
I would like to hear you explain all the rest.

I’ll try to answer your questions separately like Lost Wanderer did
With how erotic some japanese animation can be, and how addictive it can become, is it similar to the addiction of porn or masturbation?
If this refers to the H-anime then it is the same as addiction to porn which leads to you know what.
If this refers to anime that is full of sexual fanservice whilst not being H. Then anyone who watches anime because of said fanservice is guilty of the same sin as a person who watches Baywatch for the sole purpose of seeing scantily clad women (or men) in their swimwear.
I would rather not be so blunt about it. But what ARE the reasons why some guys find some japanese animations so fascinating?
If you are referring to japanese animation in general then I must say that there are a couple of reasons one can find appealing with it. Japanese animation can be classed as unique in the sense that the art, from line drawing, cel-shading, 3-d effects etc… is different from western cartoons. Anime as a vehicle of storytelling is also quite unique because unlike western cartoons, which primarily caters to kids, it may tackle more serious subjects in its storyline like the search for identity, meaning, life and death. These are only some of the reasons which may fascinate someone when watching Japanese animation.

If you are referring to the more “adult-oriented” japanese animation that some guys find appealing then I must point you out to what Madarame, an otaku in the anime Genshiken said about why “some” guys like 2d. Confronted with a “normal girl” Saki, asking a question why certain people (males) find anime and manga sexually enticing, Madarame provides this rationale. The drawings itself are not key here, what is essential here is imagination. From cave paintings which replicates the experience of hunting and nature to animation which shows sexual fanservice, the drawings are but portals to what the human brain can imagine and recreate. This is true of course in all artistic works (paintings, literature etc…). Madarame, funnily, in the heat of argument exclaims that those people who can’t get “excited” while watching “these types” of anime must have something wrong with their brains. That much I would say isn’t true because different people have different things that excite them or turn them on.
I am also not grouping together all anime because I know that there are anime which are perfectly fine. But is there a limit to the Kind of anime one should watch?
Being here in a Catholic forum I must say that it depends on the viewer. Knowing oneself and ones tendencies will be a key factor here. If a show that one is watching has elements in it that may lead one to sin then one should know better. May it be an anime full of sexual fanservice or an anime full of gore if it is personally disagreeable to you then avoid it. Of course not everyone adheres to the same standards or succumbs to the same temptations so don’t judge someone who watches something you may find disagreeable.

Aw man! You beat me to explaining the what I now call the Genshiken Theory by Professor Madarame. XD This is very much what I was going to say. However, here are just a few things I might add.
If this refers to the H-anime then it is the same as addiction to porn which leads to you know what.

The part about hentai is true. However, I just like to point out a slight technicality in that as far as ethics go, live-action porn violates more people than 2D pornographic art. The live-action porn industry exploits both its employees and its clients. Hentai on the other hand well… its really just a bunch of artists needlessly expressing their really pervy (and disturbing) imaginations.

For me, I find fan service actually serves either one or two purposes: cheap humor or dark realism.

I’ve said this before but the thing I like about fan service is not really the eye-candy, it’s seeing the awkwardness it produces and (most often) the violence done to characters who indulge in their perversion. (Naru’s rocket punch anybody? :p)

As for dark realism though, its very common in seinen. Elements of pornography, prostitution, and other forms of sexual exploitation are common in the somewhat dystopian settings found in the genre. However, its a dark picture in that you have a negative reaction to it. Sure its erotic but at the same time, anyone with a moral compass would find such grim reflections of reality to be utterly repulsive… as how they should be. Its why I find seinen so powerful. It really makes you wanna take evil and smash it against a wall.

What ARE the reasons why some people find books and movies so fascinating?

Is there a limit to the kind of books you read? Or movies you watch?

The answers will be the same.
