There are a few anime I’ve watched in the past that inspired me in my Catholic Faith.
I doubt anyone has heard of this one. It’s really old. The anime is called Candy Candy. It’s more of a soap opera really of an orphan girl and set in the 1930’s (?) America. She grows up in a small orphanage run by an old lady and a nun. Eventually, she’s adopted by a rich family who treats her EXTREMELY horribly and she undergoes welll…suffering If you’ve read “A Little Princess.”, similar to that.
Several themes are present in various episodes. The value of kindness and charity. Charity for the poor. Humility. The beauty of prayer. And so forth.
Another is Kaito St. Tail. This belongs in the “magical girl” genre, basically a story of a girl who transforms into a magical thief and uses her thieving abilities to help people, usually the ones who pop into the church and leave a “prayer” request. Her best friend is a novice nun and knows her secret.
I could never forget that transformation sequence. In the translation I watched, she prays first and says, “Dear God, Forgive me for I use no gimmicks or tricks.” With a flurry of magic tricks, she transforms. She ends the transformation and prays with her nun friend saying “May the blessings of God be with us forever.”
I know, it breaks a few cathetical rules. But for some reason, that sequence has permantly gone stuck into my head and gives me a warm Catholic glow inside everytime I remember it.
There’s a more recent one I’d like to mention, something they’ve begun showing in our local anime channel. I don’t know what the original Japanese name is called but here it’s called “Maria watches over us.” Basically, about a group of girls living in a Catholic school and themes on friendship. I’m too tired to explain it so I’ll just post this instead.

Finally, I’d like to mention my favorite one of all, a real classic! Tetsuwan Atom or Astro Boy. This anime/manga isn’t Catholic but it does have a strong theme against racism and promotes justice, courage and most especially, innocence. Astro Boy, a robot amalgam of valor, charity and innocence, has always fascinated me.
I’ve also like to mention. In the manga, there were two times of great difficulty where Astro Boy prays to God and an unnamed “God of Robots” (I’d like to assume, Astro was hoping/praying to a divine being who looked after robots which of course, ultimately would be God Himself) Those parts really touched me. Even a robot can pray to God! Wow, that really really floored me.
