But can we trust that site?
As much as any site. If you look at there link for Akita, it goes to an unapproved apparition. That makes me skeptical.
When I judge a site I check to see if they tell who they are. Not just that they identify themselves like catholic joined at the hip and are approved by some unknown bishop.

For instance the link to Catholic net, id’s them giving their history and a name of who started them. It gives contact information both e-mail and a physical address. On the other hand you know very little about apparitions.org. Their site does give good information but I rely on it with reservations.

Not sure if we are ‘on the same page’ when it comes to the underlined parts of your post.

I believe these are totally your opinion and not one shared by the Church.
Of course, no one is obliged to have a devotion to Our Lady of Akita or Our Lady of Fatima, or to ‘know’ about them. . .but one also has to consider that what that means is that one can say, “I don’t really know or care to know about XX Marian apparition” but one cannot say, “I don’t accept it or anything about it.”

Since the Church has judged the apparitions ‘worthy of belief’ and containing nothing against Catholic teaching, rejection of the teachings simply on the basis that "they’re private revelation so they have no value’ is just plain wrong.

Hi Eilish Maura,
Code:
I think the most the Church will provide is “worthy of belief”. There is no sin in rejection of Private Revelation, only in rejection of Public Revelation. But many find these Divine communications useful.
The apparitions do not belong to the “deposit of faith” because that (public revelation) ceased with the Ascension of Christ; however, the deposit of faith can be further understood and more fully lived in any era.
If it wasn’t for the apparition to Saul on his way to Damascus, which came after the Ascension, we would not have a large part of Acts in the Bible.

I don’t believe there is another site that gives ratings like they do.
I have observed there site for some time. For instance, GRABANDAL they once had the letter from the Bishop which gave a negative decision. They have removed it. They now link to supporters and give no indication of what the Church says.
Betania is another that is linked to supporters with no indication of what the Church stance is. It is approved by the Bishop but not Maria Esperanza. So the site is not accurate and you may have to dig more to find out what the true stance the Church holds.

Catechism

"In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son."26 Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father’s one, perfect, and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2:
Code:
In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word – and he has no more to say ... because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.27
There will be no further Revelation
66
"The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; **and no new public revelation is to be expected **before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ."28 Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.
67
Throughout the ages, there have been so-called “private” revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.
Code:
Christian faith cannot accept "revelations" that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such "revelations."

Hi Adrift,

Yet we have the Private Revelations of St. Catherine, St. Juan Diego, Venerable Mary of Agreda, Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich, Catherine Laboure, Father Genettes, Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, Melanie Calvat & Maximin Giraud, Bernadette Soubirous, Estelle Faguette, Justyna Szafrynska, Barbara Samulowska, Pope Leo XIII, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Lucia, Francisco, & Jacinta, St. Padre Pio, Mariette Beco, Saint Faustina, Edward Bernardo Martinez, Ivetka Korcakova and Katka Ceselkova, etc., that the Church has deemed worthy of Belief.
For the doubting Thomas’:

While all in America were watching the Chicago riots at the Democratic Convention, or viewing live war zone broadcasts from Vietnam or were being mesmerized by the Watergate hearings on television, the Mother of God was appearing for tens of thousands to see in the land of the pyramids at a Coptic church constructed to commemorate the area in Egypt where she had come with Joseph and Jesus when they all fled from Herod. Starting in April, 1968, her apparitions of light changed the lives of thousands. Her appearances at Zeitun were astounding. She was seen by more than a million people. The apparitions were broadcast by Egyptian TV, photographed by hundreds of professional photographers and personally witnessed by Egyptian President Abdul Nasser, an avowed Marxist. The apparitions lasted for three years with numerous unaccountable healings recorded by various medical professionals. The local police, who initially thought the apparitions were an elaborate hoax, searched a 15-mile radius surrounding the site to uncover any type of device that could be used to project such images. They were completely unsuccessful.

How does this information contradict what Adrift posted?

Hi Eilish Maura,

“He spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word – and he has no more to say”. Not to contradict, but to show that God still has pertinent information to reveal concerning current and/or impending events.

Hi Adrift,

Since your PM capability is not set, I will need to speak here. This poster, Insight, looks upon this thread and the Poem thread as a chess game where he is the winner, and all contributors are to be check-mated. It is a battle of his wits against others, not a spiritual exercise where he hopes to convince anyone of the benefits of either thread.

I spent many futile hours on the deleted thread, and have yet to hear what is proposed regarding this apparition, other than to believe he’s right, and everyone else is wrong.

Not a single word as, for example, let’s all get together and pray, or any such valid reason for posting the thread. He indicated to the moderators in his request to reopen it, that many had sent him messages about the thread closing, but where are they? In all, there were over 200 posts on the apparitions, so it seems to me they would have been given ample information. The only persons obsessed with this apparition is Insight and the OP.

Insight:
I had some message communications with other posters that were interested in these apparitions, and we are all baffled and discouraged.
I have no intention of debating … well actually it is not a debate but rather a monologue with only one opinion acceptable to him - his way. You may continue if you wish, but know that I will pray for you in the background, that God will gift you with wisdom, peace, and fortitude as you contend with him. Your posts are very knowledgable and full of sound truth. I pray this exercise in one-up-man-ship by Insight will soon come to conclusion.

I’m not entirely sure what the debate is about. But here’s my two cents. I have some hands on exposure to Japanese culture and their history. Perhaps the reason that the Akita apparation is sorely downplayed is this: Japanese people were cut off from outside contact for about 200 years straight. They developed their own customs, traditions, and spiritual practices. As a result, they have a very Xenophobic type culture. Their first exposure to Christianity was by way of Portuguese settlers and they were NOT recieved very kindly. Unlike when the Spanish and Porteuguese invaded and dominated the New World in the Americas, The attempts at succesful conversion of the Japanese was not nearly as succesful. Japanese people hated gaijin and often many of the Japanese who converted to Catholicism were killed. Remember, These people were samurai and Bushido trained. They had more defenses against outsiders than the unsuspecting people of North America. Japanese people were just as imperialistic as the Europeans and had just as much pride. Christianity is a minority practiced religion much like Buddhism in the states. So It is my guess that the church often overlooks Catholic phenomenon in a country that does not regularly practice that religion. Unlike Fatima, or Guadalupe , where many of the people were Catholic and more importantly European catholic, many more people would be apt to take notice and contact Rome about it. Likewise, if the same apparition were to occur in Japan where only a few catholics would verify the apparition, and more importantly *know *who Mary even was, there would be less of an interest by anyone and it would probably take a longer time for Rome to respond. People don’t talk about it because Japanese people don’t talk about it and most Japanese people don’t talk about it because they do not care or believe in it.

Now THAT is very telling about just how much the CHURCH values private revelation.
I’m sure The Holy Mother is pleased with your cavilier and flippant attitude towards the apparitions.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us
Our Lady of Akita, pray for us.

BTW, simply because you couldn’t find a link on Vatican.va is hardly an indictment of Marian Apparitions.

Nothing good can come of this thread.
Yeah… the Akita Warnings sure can be disconcerting and scary to many. Quick… someone notify Christ that “nothing good” can come about of Him sending His mother to us with warnings.

What was Jesus thinking?

I’ve read a number of posters state that The Holy See has never given approval of Akita… yet they ignore that the Prefect of the CDF (the current Pope) did exactly that in 1988.

As Prefect of the CDF, that is EXACTLY what his job entails… you know, that whole *Doctrine of the Faith *stuff.

But as another poster has already mentioned (and I’ve alluded to already), no one is obliged to include Akita, or any other Church approved Marina Apparition, in their own devotions. But with that said, no Catholic can deny them, either.

I must say, I’ve seen a disturbing trend on this thread. The amount of energy and time some have spent activly attempting to dissuade others from even giving The Akita Apparition even the slightest hint of legitimacy, is…well… disturbing, to say the least.

Here’s the bottom line, gang: the local Bishop has approved of such for his diocese. The Prefect of the CDF has approved of such for the Universal Church. If any of us so desire to include Akita into our private devotion… go for it.

If any of us choose not to, no problem. But NONE OF US can deny that the supernatural events at Akita, Japan are anything but The Holy Mother sent to us by her Son, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Anyone who tries to downplay, belittle, or dissuade anyone else from believing such will ultimatly be answerable to Him.

May God bless,
The Catholic Caveman

Where does the Church teach that a Catholic cannot deny or opt to not believe any apparition - including approved ones?

Yet IF the Vatican/Church valued them so highly wouldn’t it be reasonable to find at least a link to an official list?
