I come from a long line of hunters. We always eat what we hunt. Right down the road from me is a business that dresses the meat from the hunters’ outings. While hunting can be enjoyable, it is not strictly a recreational activity. Most kids here learn to hunt by the time they are 10 or 12. For most kids, I believe this is a very good thing for a variety of reasons.
  1. kids learn that all food doesn’t come from Kroger’s.
Ah! I think since the topic is children who hunt, it is good to teach them basic meat preparation, hunting or fishing. There is something extra satisfying about eating from the fruit of one’s own labor. That goes for gardening as well, in deference to any vegetarians.

Yes no Donner Party types here. Spencelo probably lives in a comfortable urban enviroment and simply can’t comprehend a rural way of life. Information is obtained thru the net and reading not by practical observation (as evidenced by his dismissal of experiences of those who have worked on farms, slaughterhouses etc.) Spence is the epitome of the modern urban enviromentalist.

I am not denegrating you Spence, I want you to come and experience first hand the reality of hunting and food production. The offer will always be open for you if you would like to come up to the Yukon meet with First Nations and others and learn first hand rather than just relying on studies and books by people who have no first hand knowledge. Learn by experience not just sound bites.
If I pretend to be a vegan will you take me hunting too?:yup:

I always thought the spoils of the hunt were a little gamy. there’s something to be said for veal.

Hunters in general tend to respect the animals that they hunt. They respect the animal and its attributes, hence them giving some level of reverence to the animal. The level of reverence varies from culture to culture. Correct me if I am in error about this.

there’s nothing to respect about a duck. I owe it a clean death, that’s about it.

Proper field dressing can eliminate a lot of that. I have had any gamy venison or elk in years, but then I have to hand that to my father. He runs elk and mule deer hunts and is very good at dressing and prepping.

I’ve field dressed many… maybe I should have said that some game has a very pronounced flavor.

I believe I can draw a rational line between plants and animals, and in fact, Catholics agree with me. They are against torturing cats for fun, and some asked, “Why aren’t Catholics against torturing plants for fun?,” I’m sure they’d give the same answer as I gave you.
Weeding and cooking veggies are fun! :D::p:D

Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, and other groups like that have spent more money and time on animal habitats than any animal rights group.

Jerry, I respectfully disagree. Ya gotta respect the way they fly out of your shotgun pattern just as ya pull the trigger and how many shells they make ya go through.:banghead:
