Hmmm… I never call them that, maybe that’s why I misunderstood. ☺️

If someone actually thinks that is offensive, they really have a problem. 😳

I don’t see anyone referring to them by their first letter.
I’ve definitely heard phrases like ‘the c word’ ‘the f word’ and even ‘no, the other f word’ (gay slur)

I roll my eyes when people freak out over someone accidentally saying it in a rap song or whatever, but i dont care enough to be irritated at that phrase. I try not to use vulgar language in general so it’s not unusual to say it if I’m being honest.

I do remember a stand up comedian making a joke about this though (“you make me say it in my head”) 😅

I doubt saying it in a rap song is accidental. And your examples prove my point. I don’t hear anyone “ freaking out” over them the way people have about theN word. I find the others just as offensive.

I was talking about someone saying it while rapping to a song*. Not the rapper itself.

I’m not black, so I really can’t speak for how this word is equal to all other slurs. There is obviously a horrid history behind it that’s not quite the same as other vulgar words, so I guess there’s that.

But I would have to disagree with the above. Homophobic, transphobic slurs or even other racial slurs directed towards Asians for example, are almost as taboo unless you’re part of that group. It’s generally an unspoken rule amongst peers at this point. If you’re part of the younger generations and/or active on social media, I think you’d see this quite often

Not surprised that such a just move would be viewed with a fair about of debate by those unaffected by this example of institutionalized and systematic racism…I am, however surprised, there hasn’t been an outcry by some about the even generic name for this food stuff:
So you know better than the family of Aunt Jemima herself? Well how about that?

Does this sound like racism?

Democrats are ardent supporters of abortion on demand laws.

Half of all African Americans who are conceived are aborted.

Though African Americans are 12% of the population, they are 33% of all those aborted.

The Democrat party are strong supporters of Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood clinics are found overwhelmingly in minority neighborhoods or within walking distance.

Does all that sound racist? Perhaps those telling us how racist things are should not be talking about "those unaffected by this example of institutionalized and systematic (the word is systemic) racism.

In my book, supporting Democrat candidates is usually much worse than some fabrications of racism from 130 years ago. Sounds like systematic racism.

LOL…reality check…there is no real Aunt Jemima…

So I, you, or no one else knows about her family…she is merely a brand, or symbol (unfortunately a symbol of systematic and institutionalized racism( not a person!

Perhaps socially acceptable at one, but like burning heretics at the stake, or stoning adulterers, most of society has a clearer, more egalitarian view of those we previously marginalized.

The syrup will remain the same, and our pancakes will be no less as tasty!

There’s nothing to debate in that respect. A group of strangers attacking a statue somewhere in Philadelphia has no bearing on the racist origins of Aunt Gemima. None.

This is exactly the sort of thing that anti-Catholic people sometimes do to attack us, and we rightfully reject it.
I can’t believe an insult such as accusing others of being “anti-Catholic” is permitted here, this is an abomination and please don’t accuse others at this.
This is a misreading of the post, and a very large one.

People who are anti-Catholic sometimes try to attack the Church by bringing up objectionable things that Catholics have done.

It’s the equivalent of trying to delegitimize the discussion of racism by bringing up a group of strangers who vandalized a statue in Philadelphia. It has no valid part in the discussion other than as a distraction. None. As a tactic, it is immoral.

How will minorities now be represented on the shelves of white people like me?
Probably not at all for the most part. Activists will probably want alienating images that marketers will reject. Companies will not want the resulting lack of any black images, (exclusionary racism) so they’ll just have no images at all.

Not a huge loss, but it is, in my opinion, a lost opportunity. It’s like the "Catholic shows) and the “Jewish shows” of the early post war period.

I’m just curious what the name change can be without it being some generic pancake brand. Would it hearken to Aunt Jemima while trying to be as inoffensive as possible (Mrs. Jemima? Mrs. J?) - or would it be the same recipe with all new name. Quaker Pancakes? Most Famous Pancakes?

Has a brand name this big ever changed names like this before? I know one of the dishwashing detergent brands did it some time ago (Electrosol to Finish) but nothing else comes to mind.

Sylvia’s turnip greens out of South Carolina, available in much of the US, maybe even at Walmart.

I know nothing about the company, maybe she owns it. Maybe this is just a model but it’s a bit of the same thing… Aunt Jemima has changed throughout the years. We were not the same country we were 130 years ago and addition, there are differing stories about the origins way back. Already mentioned in the thread, I see no reason to repeat it.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I saw some canned food and sometimes you see something on it like “Southern Cookin’” or something…this can had no human beings on the labelling… still, I’m a bit wary of when we may say some is okay but others is not. The above with Sylvia is somewhat close to the Aunt Jeimima labelling.
