CCC 1219 The Church has seen in Noah’s ark a prefiguring of salvation by Baptism, for by it “a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water”

CCC 56 After the unity of the human race was shattered by sin God at once sought to save humanity part by part. The covenant with Noah after the flood gives expression to the principle of the divine economy toward the “nations”, in other words, towards men grouped “in their lands, each with [its] own language, by their families, in their nations”.

56 is especially important because it is through Noah being the patriarch of the only surviving family, and the covenant with him then applied to all his descendants.
Whats the CCC number of the last quote again? The one above is wrong.

The last line is me. The one above is taken right from the CCC

I emailed my pastor again. Hope he doesnt get mad. Hes not a patient man but i doubt youll believe anythjng he tells me.

As far as your links, google and see all the unbiased information that says there has necer been a human bottleneck of 8 people.

I’m not here to try to change anyone’s mind, I joined in the thread to add to the discussion. If it is upsetting you, I apologize. I’ve studied and read both the Scriptures and the different theories on the flood as well as different perspectives on Noah and his family. Your pastor is your pastor, not mine, and I’ve no wish to put you out, as its your time and no, I’m not going to change my mind because your pastor tells you something, nothing against you or your pastor either.

We’re off topic, anyway. I’d still like to know how people from literalist churches reconcile their faith with what science has to say.

They create their own science. See Ken Ham and Kent Hovind. They continually refer to “science”, which is their creation science. Normal science is called “secular” science.

The conclusions are given (creation in 6 days, 6000 years ago, flood 4000 years ago etc.). You just need to come up with the right theories to fit the observations to your conclusions.

My friends belong to churches that are huge and they all seem to be happy and unconcerned about what science has to say about what they believe.

I grew up protestant, my grandmother would tell me that the teachers were wrong and what the bible said was true. It was really that simple. I knew the creation story was real and true because that is what the bible says. I knew that Noah and the flood were real because the bible tells me so, same with Jonah. Science is wrong the bible is right, that’s what was taught.

I guess that’s how my friends must think, but I couldn’t think like that.

That’s easy to say if you weren’t raised that way. I didn’t know any Catholics until college. There is only one Catholic Church in the whole county and it small, really small. The only people I knew growing up that put so much focus on science and not what the bible taught were rebellious teens who claimed to be atheist. It wasn’t until I researched Catholicism that I learned that faith and science can live happily together.

At the risk of veering off topic again, what is your opinion about what is said in post #18 and what the CCC says about 8 people remaining after the flood?

And that’s how so many young people loose their faith. Either you believe in God or you believe in science.

I agree with what the CCC says. I just don’t understand why 8 people. I don’t know if that number was supposed to mean anything or if Noah and his wife, their 3 sons and their 3 wives just had a nice ring to it. 🤷 No clue.

Do you think they were the only ones left on the earth?

Honestly, I don’t really care. Only 8 people and 2 animals of each kind isn’t something that I have to believe to be Catholic, so I kinda stopped thinking about it after converting. If there were only 8, fine. If this flood was only for a certain area and there were people living like nothing in the world was wrong, I’m fine with that too. Heck, if it never happened and it was just a story, I’m fine with that too.

Does anyone else lurking care enough to weigh in?

Please, let’s not waste our time by reading articles from creation websites!!
Good idea! Why read something that challenges what you believe?

And never waiver from your pre-conceived conclusion, even if there might be facts that disagree with it. That’s the new scientific method!

Unfortunately, when I was in school long ago, I was taught to go where the evidence leads, even if it leads away from what I thought might be true. That’s the old scientific method.
