The Bible may be Catholic but lots of Catholics including clergy do not follow it. We have an issue where our priest will not insist on women covering their heads in Church.

He also allows women to read at Mass.

I thought the Bible was an absolute authority not one that you can ‘pick and mix’

Does anyone really believe that nothing got messed up either on accident or on purpose?

Granted the Catholic church did get a lot of stuff together, but I’d still give the credit for the Bible to the prophets and apostles.
I am sure that folk exagerate in their reports. We all do it. No doubt there were copying errors too. But I am confident the Holy Spirt ensured enough truth survived for us to have an accurate record of the essence of Christ.

The postman should have come in a truck but the lane was too small so he chose a car but that broke down so he used a bicycle which got a puncture so he had to deliver my mail on foot. But the essential thing was that ‘I still got my mail and the message it contained’. 😉

True but the Apostle and Prophets were not around at the time of the Council of Nicea.

This was Paul’s advice to a particular early church regarding a particular problem. Ask your priest about this and he will explain the teaching on this exact point.

Christ’s peace.

I know this is of subject but you want to take the bible literally, which is not the teaching of the church. Each of the Gospels and the letters of St. Paul were written to and for specific communities to meet thier needs of faith. What I wonderful about these writtings is that they apply to us today, in matters of salvation, as they did when they were first written.

Oh, thanks :o

I see what you are trying to say. But if somebody takes those writings and interprets them in a way that is contrary to the Church that identified them as Scripture, contrary to the practice of the Church out of which they arose, and outside of the Church whose Apostolic forefathers were given the promise by Christ Himself that He would be “with you always” and to whom Christ similarly promised to send “another paraclete to guide you into all the truth” – well, where does the credibility lie? With the Church whose bishops today descend in direct physical, spiritual, and doctrinal succession from those apostles? or with some guy who grabs the book, reads it outside of the matrix that produced it, and decides the Church is wrong?

Pick one.
So really, the only proof you have for saying the Bible is “Roman Catholic” is what you call physical, spiritual, and doctrinal successions from the apostles?. But the Bible tells us in more than one place how that the first Bible was in existence well before Catholics were ever around.

I read each post; awesome catholic rebuttals…👍

The Bible is Catholic…

The Catholic Church gave us the bible; it was codified by the C.C. in the latter part of the 4th century, to prevent other heretical Christian communities, (all claiming to be the true apostolic Christian church) from distorting the word of God, and it was passed on
via apostolic tradition, (“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.” 2 Thessalonians 2:15) and to this day the C.C. still holds to the traditions established through the centuries, and rightfully so, if you believe what your bible says.

Jesus endowed his established church with the holy spirit as her Counsellor and promised to be with that church forever. If you believe in the infallibility of the holy spirit then the catholic apostolic church (not a collection of books) is the sole authority to which every Christian should acknowledge. Here are a few things Jesus said to his the fledgling apostolic church: “If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” If the protestant reformation led by M.L. was necessary, then Jesus did in fact leave His church as orphans for 1500 years until M.L. came along and saved the day, and we know that’s not true; just look at all the division and disunity within all these different and disparate protestant churches, ignoring the bibles message of “unity” and “oneness”! “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; “And are built up you on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, (not built upon the bible) Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:19-22 --“to him be glory in the church (not the bible) and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”Ephesians 3:21 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church (not refer to the bible); and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” —“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church (not write a collection of books); and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:16-18 --"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” "…that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” 1 Tim. 3:15 --The church, according to the KJB is the house of the living God; I think that takes precedence over the infallible bible which I treasure immensely, after all it is the word of living God, but not the house of the living God. —“And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Ephesians 1:21-22 The church which is the house of the living God is also Jesus’ Mystical Body! “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Luke 10:17 " Why do protestants reject the catholic apostolic church, knowing full well they are ultimately rejecting God, according to the bible! Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Where in the bible does Jesus talk about sola scriptura (scripture alone) and private interpretation? Nowhere! He tells the apostolic church to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…” and declares that he will be with them forever!!!

If Jesus wasn’t planning on sticking around to carry out his authority, logically he would need a sort of surrogate or a stand in to make sure his plan for salvation was well guarded and that is why he said: “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." (authority) And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit (infallible guidance). If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” The catholic apostolic church is being guided by the Holy Spirit according to the bible and He is part of the godhead (trinity) and simply can’t be wrong; fallible men within the church can and are wrong but not Jesus’ church which is His Mystical Body as a whole.

In addition to that, why should I believe that every important thing God wanted to impart, must be recorded in Scripture, when this claim can be found nowhere in the bible? However the bible clearly says all authority has been given to the Apostolic Church established by Jesus, making that church and that church alone the final arbiter on all matters of faith and morals. Everything Christians love about their religion, has its provenance in the Catholic Church, including the Bible itself, which again, was codified out of necessity. Protestants have no problem trusting the church when it comes to collecting, selecting, compiling and codifying Sacred Scripture and then declaring it to be infallible —but they don’t trust the church; which is the same as saying you don’t trust the holy spirit which was sent by Jesus at Pentecost, to guide Jesus’ church in perpetuity!!?

If the C.C. has been wrong on matters of established doctrine such as the immaculate conception etc. etc., then they could have certainly been wrong regarding the selection, accuracy and infallibility of the codified bible. Under the protestant premise that the Catholic Church is not the church founded by Jesus Christ or that it is, but fell into apostasy, which is totally unbiblical, the bible becomes nothing more than a fallible book(s) written by mere humans. However this is a false premise for the bible plainly says that the Apostolic Church (not the bible) is the sole authority on matters of faith and morals.

In the end, all one has to do is read their bible to find out where truth lies. The Catholic Apostolic Church declared via the Holy Spirit, “church is the pillar and foundation of TRUTH” Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth” and that truth is found in the “house of God which is the church of the living god,” the “pillar and foundation of truth,” Jesus’ Mystical “Body” which are all referred to as -------Church!!! Paul clearly understood that the church was/is Jesus’ Mystical Body, “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” By persecuting the members of Jesus’ church, Paul was vicariously persecuting Jesus all over again; Think about it…👍

Points:
The Title of this thread is that the bible is Catholic, not Roman Catholic. There are several Catholic Churches that are not in full communion with Rome who, none the less, can legitimately claim unbroken apostolic succession.
The earliest reference to the Church as Catholic is found in a Letter written by Ignatius of Antioch to th Church in Smyrna in the Year 107 AD. I qouted it in post #71 but will repost here for your benefit.
8:1 But avoid divisions, as being the beginning of evils. Do ye all follow the bishop, as Jesus Christ doth the Father; and follow the presbyters as the apostles; and have respect unto the deacons as unto the commandment of God. Let no one, apart from the bishop, do any of the things that appertain unto the church. Let that eucharist alone be considered valid which is celebrated in the presence of the bishop, or of him to whom he shall have entrusted it.
8:2 Wherever the bishop appear, there let the multitude be; even as wherever Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful either to baptize, or to hold a love-feast without the consent of the bishop; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that also is well pleasing unto God, to the end that whatever is done may be safe and sure.
(The Epistle of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans)
This clearly predates the time of the canonization of our Bible in the late 300’s. In additon it clearly states the authority of the Bishops, and warns most strenuosly against divisions, or doing anything apart from the duly appointed Bishops of the Church.
Now I remind you that this is a person who was a contemporary and disciple of St John the Apostle and Evangelist. The Disciple “whom Jesus Loved”. Furthermore, Ignatius was a Bishop himself and a staunch defender of the faith against both the Romans and the herisies of the Gnostics and the Docetists.
It is hardly feasable to think that he would be writing anything not in accord with the pure apostolic teachings of Christ.

Having stated these facts above I would be interested in learning two things from you.
First, when do you believe the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church came into existance, and
Second, the Bible quotes stating the Bible predates the Church. And By Bible, I mean the one that you and I hold in our hands - Containing the same books of the NT.

Joe,
All I can say is 👍 👍 👍

Thank you for your excellent testimony.
Coming, as it does, from a convert to Catholicism, it should give our protestant friends pause.

I would say that if the “only” substance we have for saying the Bible is Catholic is “physical, spiritual, and doctrinal succession from the Apostles,” that’s pretty good.

So when do you think the Catholic Church 'came around?"

So back to the Issue of the apostles ordaining bishops and leaving things to them.

If that was “the plan” why would new apostles be called for a short time and than stop with no recored of the change being made? (outside CC tradition)

What I find in the NT is a system for governing the church of which a bishop (or pastor) is a part, but that was founded on a foundation of Prophets and Apostles. I’ve not seen many buildings last long when separated from their foundation.

If any Church can demonstrate historical, doctrinal, and spiritual continuity and lack of separation from the foundation it is the Catholic Church.

What do you mean by the term “prophet?”

We reserve the term “Apostle” to those of the eyewitness age out of respect. Even the New Testament is ambiguous concerning the term, naming Barnabas, Andronicus and Junias, Epaphroditus, and two unnamed Christians in Corinth “Apostles” but Timothy, Titus, and others whom we would expect to be called Apostles are not.

The Church believes that the Holy Spirit passes apostolic authority through the laying on of hands in historic succession from the Apostles to the bishops they consecrate through history. Our bishops are functionally and spiritually apostles.

So back to the Issue of the apostles ordaining bishops and leaving things to them.

If that was “the plan” why would new apostles be called for a short time and than stop with no recored of the change being made? (outside CC tradition)
First let’s deal with the term Apostle.
The very term “Apostles” has multiple meanings and inferences depending upon who is using it and in what context. However, the word “Apostle” is from the Greek, Apostolos means “one who is sent forth, who is entrusted with a mission”. Since Jesus didn’t speak Greek, it is highly unlikely that He would have called the selected 12 men Apostles. What he did refer to them as were His Chosen Ones, His beloved.
He then gave them the mission of spreading the Gospel and founding the Church. To accomplish this He gave them Authority. That Authority was recognized and exersized all through the early Church without significant interuption. The fact that some terms might have changed in no way alters the fact of the clear lineage of succession. Remember that Peter is refered to both as Apostle and as the Bishop of Rome.

Let’s put ourselves in the time of the Apostles for a moment. From the year 33 to the year 100 AD we had an ever decreasing number of “Origional” apostles. Also remember that they were scattered far and wide preaching the Good News. Over time, as the apostles were dying, the church continued to grow at an astounding rate. Finally there is only one Apostle left alive. Our beloved St John. Did St. John feel the need to make any changes in the Church structure? Did he feel there was something missing, or wrong with the current structure, titles, terms, liturgy, etc of the Church at the end of His Life? The answer is no he did not, for if he did, he would surely have trained his disciples differently.
So you see from this that, as the origional 12, trained by Christ Himself and guided by the Holy Spirit, established the Church it was done in the manner which Christ and the Holy Spirit Planned.

The reason you are having trouble grasping this “change” issue is because, like so many protestant groups, you put the cart before the horse. You accept the Bible as compiled by the Church, then try to deny the Visible Church built on the Oral, as well as written teachings of many Early Church Fathers.
What I find in the NT is a system for governing the church of which a bishop (or pastor) is a part, but that was founded on a foundation of Prophets and Apostles. I’ve not seen many buildings last long when separated from their foundation.
And here you have a major error.
The Church was not built on the Prophets and Apostles but rather on Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Apostles and those appointed by the Apostles using their Christ Endowed Authority.
If, as you believe, Christ founded His Church on Prophets and Apostles, Promising to be with them until the end of time, then allowed this Church to fall into apostacy after the death of the origional 12 two things would have occurred. First you claim that the Church fell into confusion. That would have been around 110 AD (by your statement earlier) with the death of St. John.
Second, due to that confusion, true apostolic succession would have been lost along with any chance of the Church being able to assemble a valid Bible. Since you hold that the Bible is Valid, the Church could not have fallen into confusion when you say it did.
OR
It fell into confusion and apostacy then out of confusion and apostacy, then back into confusion - - -
Something that the Lord Promised would not happen.

James

Eph 2: 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

oops my bad. I’ll let Paul know he was wrong.

1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

It’s quite possible that there was to be some confusion and oh my a “falling away”

It is 100% possible for a bunch of people to get together and without the direction of the Holy Spirit (though I’ll not rule out some help from him) and stack a bunch of letters and books together. I believe that most if not all who helped to assemble the Bible meant well, but that does not make it error free.

And here you have a major error.
The Church was not built on the Prophets and Apostles but rather on Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Apostles and those appointed by the Apostles using their Christ Endowed Authority.
I believe our friend, teancum79 is referring to Ephesians 2:19-20 “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone . . .”

The role of “prophet” is extremely ambiguous in the New Testament. However, in Catholic understanding, Our Lady is one of those who carries the prophetic mantle along with John the Baptist (the last OT prophet), Zechariah and a handful of others.

To say the kingdom of god is founded on Apostles and prophets, to my mind, would chiefly mean the Prophets of Old who spoke of “the cornerstone.”

Since the coming of Christ, the role of prophet subsists mainly in that of the Bishop, whose privileged charism is for teaching & preaching the word of God.

You believe that Jesus commisioned Peter, along with the other Apostles, to Build His Church, upon the Rock of Peter and the Gates of Hell would not prevail, but that would only last until the Apostles Died.
After which - error filled Christianity - until the early 1800’s when “Golden Tablets” were given by an angel to Mr Smith.
Well since you like St Paul:
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! (Galatians 1:8)

The rock was revelation which at the time would go through Petter. And the gospel the LDS preach is the same as in days of Petter and Christ. Joseph Smith was simply asked to put things back in place and provide another whiteness of Christ divinity.
