I’m sorry, TimothyH, but where do you get this idea? The entire New Testament recorded in the Scriptures makes no mention of such a notion: that we come to Christ only through Mary. Christ’s own words are very direct in this matter. He constantly says “come to me”, so we may be taken by Him to the Father. The blessed Virgin is not given any recourse to after the Nativity, infancy, and youth of our Lord.
I’m not going “sola scriptura” on you, but the Bible is essential for an understanding of our holy religion, right? Everything message we human beings each need for salvation is in the Bible, but much is shadowed in metaphor. This is why we need the Church to interpret it and guide us. The Church wrote the Scriptures as its ultimate codified text. I just don’t see where in the Scriptures Mary is given the importance of handing us to Jesus. Our Lord constantly says that He is capable of bearing our burdens by Himself. That seems to be the entire message of the New Covenant God made with us.
To say that we only get to the Way via the… proto-way is confusing matters, isn’t it?? Mary said “yes” in humility, and bore God. Without her, we would have no Christ - but God could have waited another millennium for an equally humble and pious woman to say “yes”. We don’t depend on Mary after she carried forth our blessed Saviour. To me, she is an afterthought in history, though the longest-lingering afterthought we could ever think.
With regards to Protestants: they do say priests are an obstacle, unfortunately. There’s a difference between liturgy and private prayer, though. We need priests for liturgy; we do not need Mary for private prayer to God. Is this not correct? Sigh… I can’t even pray the rosary; I can’t stand saying more "Hail Mary"s than "Our Father"s!
