Well you know…it is all about the money. Shame on the NY archdiocese and its administrators, ahem ahem.

LOL.

No surprise though.

Sheen was a city mouse for sure, not a country mouse

I personally don’t have any idea of what it’s all about. Sheen has been dead for 40 years and I don’t think NYC has profited much from his body being interred in St Pats.
Peoria, no doubt, would see a huge influx of $$$$$ if his body was moved.

I think that is a very solid article and I learned a few things from it.

My position is that if Peoria opened his cause (after NY passed on it) and spent substantial time and money advancing it, they should at least be able to have his major relics. Although, it would be good to keep some relics in New York where he spent most of his time living and working.

But on the whole, I think it is an embarrassing situation.

The control of Archbishop Sheen’s body here is not a “freedom of religion” issue. It is a probate and property rights issue.

No one in this case is trying to get control of his body so they can stop the religious process of sainthood or interfere with his being venerated. It’s quite clearly a case of who will get the benefit of sponsoring a canonization process that will very likely result in sainthood and monetary benefits of tourism.

The Archdiocese of New York doesn’t have any good basis or reason to claim it’s not subject to the courts in this matter, especially since the Archdiocese would not hesitate to use the courts to enforce its own rights in many other matters of property law or freedom of religion or any number of other things under the sun.

No, I didn’t mean to imply that it was. Sorry I wasn’t more clear. I know I went off in a slightly tangental train of thought.

My thoughts had just drifted in a more serious manner when it comes to how does the Church handle Herself when She is faced with secular laws that are contrary to Her own.

The Sheen thing will eventually come to some conclusion, one way or the other. Some will rejoice, others will be disappointed.

And for the most part, with the exception of those who are closely associated with either side, the rest of the American Catholic public will go on with their daily lives.

Due to her advanced age, I have a great deal of sympathy for his niece.
