Hi Everyone,

I have a question about the book of Job (admitedly, I did not read the whole book). It is my understanding that God allowed Satan to tempt Job. Was God doing this to prove to Satan that some of his followerw will be faithfull no matter what? And did Job ever cave and distrust God? In a nut shell what is the moral of the story?

Thanks

I’d recommend reading all of it and then ask questions. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

Yes, you should read the whole story. God allowed Satan to take everything away from Job. Job was still faithful to God when he had nothing and in much pain. God restored all that was taken from him plus more. That’s the “basic” of it, but you should read it all because I may have missed something important. Sadly, I haven’t read it in a while myself.

We learn many things from Job:
  1. Although Satan is God’s enemy, he can’t act contrary to God’s direction. In short, God is the teacher and Satan has to ask to use the restroom.
  2. Even when you don’t understand what’s going on, God is in control.
  3. Prosperity and disaster are not measures of our faith in God or our worthiness as His servants.
  4. Don’t draw your identity or self-worth from possessions, they can be taken away in an instant.
  5. If your spouse gives you advice contrary to your faith in God, ignore them.
  6. Be ready to answer for your faith when your friends don’t believe.
  7. Live your life so you can answer for your faith when your friends don’t believe.
  8. No matter how well you think you know God, He is more pwerful, more faithful, and more wonderful than you can comprehend.
    Enjoy the book.

I feel bad for your spouse. 😉 I might suggest that the more appropriate lesson is “if your spouse gives you advice contrary to the faith – don’t follow it: provide them an example that allows them to draw closer to the truth”…

A shame that Adam didn’t know this!

Why did God allow Satan to tempt us into sin then if thats the case? If sin was God’s will then why is the devil getting punished for it? Does that mean that calvinism is true? I’m sorry, but so much in the Bible doesnt add up & I’m losing my faith because of it.

If Calvinism was true, Jesus would have taught it. As it is, it very suddenly appeared 1,500 years after Jesus. It is nothing more than one man’s opinion, and a stereotypically dour European opinion at that.

As to punishment, the devil is eternally punished for his rebellion against God. He cannot repent, as pure spirits make a one-time choice whom they will serve. We have an advantage over the fallen angels in that we can repent. The devil not only does not want to repent, he in fact, cannot. He is jealous of our ability in that regard, because he does not and cannot ever possess it.

Just as Ford has the right to test its cars ands trucks, God also has the right to test all of His creation. Testing per se is not evil, but is intended to bring good. It is our response to that testing that can be evil.

As to your faith, you might be over-thinking things, or you might be under spiritual attack. The devil’s main weapon is discouragement.
