The Book of Mormon... have you read it?

Thank you Zerinus for your answer. I have read your blog and also the article about the bible. According to you, archaeology, etc. is not an exact science, therefore accepting your description, and explanation, I can only come to one conclusion, that both the bible and the BOM are both fables and a bunch of tripe. There is no actual, intangible, irrefutible, proof for either. I will now become an atheist.

Well, many have done precisely that. The problem, of course, is that neither the Bible nor the Book of Mormon can be proven ‘true’ through science. Scripture must be proven ‘true’ through quite a different process.

Mormons:

Do not answer, they respond to questions.

Do not accept lack of evidence as proof of its nonexistence.

Will twist scripture until they get the result they want.

Will believe anything their prophet says no matter how far fetched

Will change their teachings at any time to suit their means

Ignore plain evidence that the BOM is a fraud

Will ignore prior teachings of their leaders and prophets that are considered outlandish now

Put the “burning in the bosom” above all intelligence and common sense reasoning.

Yes, I have read the Book of Mormon and I can testify of the truth to which it testifies.

I’m sure you can. With all due respect, it doesn’t mean you’re testifying to the truth. There is one Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Truth. The Holy Spirit would not lead one person to the LDS and another person to the Catholic Church. Since there is nothing outside of Joseph Smith and LDS scriptures to back up the LDS claim, how can you possibly trust the witness?

As I once queried a former neighbor of mine who was a bishop in a local LDS church, “Hypothetically, you have to make a choice. You can only choose one. Which do you choose, the Bible or the Book of Mormon?” I sat in stunned silence when he responded, “Well, the Book of Mormon, of course!” Which do you choose my Mormon friends???

Hypothetically, there is never a reason to choose, unless I can pose another hypothetical situation: “Hypothetically, you have to make a choice. You can only choose one. Which do you choose, the Book of Matthew or the Book of Mark?”

I understand why your Bishop friend chose the Book of Mormon, but the reality is, we never have to choose.

Your hypothetical is apples and oranges. Both Matthew and Mark are part of the Bible, both are one of the four gospels. How does the BoM compare with any of the books in the Bible? Short answer, it doesn’t.

You are begging the question a bit with that. You see, we think it does.

The bible is a collection of books, each one of which could (and did at the time it was written) stand alone. The New Testament is a collection of books that was bound with the collection of books called the Old Testament, for the sake of convenience; let’s keep all the scriptures in one place, shall we?

Well, for us the Book of Mormon is another bound collection of books, each one scriptural just like the books of Mark, Luke, Matthew and John–not to mention Acts and all the letters…

Indeed, if I had been that Bishop, I would have rummaged around in my purse and pulled out a copy of my ‘quad,’ which is the four standard works (plus a bible dictionary) all bound up into one volume. The four standard works are: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants. When asked which book I would choose, I would hold up that one volume and say 'this one."

Why all this fretting over the BoM? Other than its racism and a few theological problems it’s a fairly sound Christian book if you treat it as religious fiction.

The Pearl of Great Price is the book that hold the most errant doctrines and the one that is most easily shown to be fabricated by Joseph Smith.

I reiterate: the BOM is still a book of fantasy. The “Great Apostacy” is a figment of LDS imagination. The Catholic Church ( both Eastern and Western rites ) is the ONE TRUE CHURCH and all others are false. Try as hard as it might, the LDS CANNOT prove otherwise !!!

Well I disagree with your second half… However the BoM does not have any proof except for the testamonials of a few men most of whom were later called declared liars by the LDS church…
With the Bible we do find archaeological proof, the cities are still there as well as the valleys, the rivers and the hills and they are exactly located where they should according to the Biblical account. Proof for the peoples in the Bible is sufficient for those which are still in existence and those which are not anymore. There is proof for Jesus being a historical figure in the area (through the Bible and through other accounts)…
You can’t find that with Mormon Scriptures at all…

Thank you Janet. As for your disagrement with part of my statement, we will dicuss it later. God Bless.

The Book of Mormon is true. The Spirit of the Lord witnesses to me that it is. You cannot “prove” that the Bible is true any more than you can “prove” that the Book of Mormon is true. If your faith is based on such “evidence,” then it is hollow, and a figment of your imagination.

Nice try, Zerinus, but NOT convincing. You can keep trying but will never make it. I think you’ll have better luck trying to convince a Moslim than a TRUE Christian.

the Spirit is true.
As the bible says, (John 4:21-23)
*Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. *

but we are also called to test the spirits and “truths” (1 John 4:1-6)
*
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” *

So, it is also legitimate for us to DISCERN these books and “revelations from God”.
We don’t just accept things as truth so easily 🙂

Prayerful discernment in all these things will ultimately lead us to truth and God because OUR God (yes OUR, all of us) is a Faithful God yea?
And He will be so loving and kind to reveal truth to us no matter how how we try to discover it. God reveals more than we discover.
Praying constantly and trusting in the Spirit may lead to the Bible, may lead to worship, may lead to more praying, fasting, may even lead to authorities (Pope, pastors, teachers, mentors, parents).

But instead of bickering about who’s right or who’s wrong,
let’s all assume that we’ve only got a partial truth anyways. (there’s some bible verse from one of Paul’s letters that says we only prophecy or know half the truth?)**can someone please find me the verse, I cannot remember exactly where. Thanks)

and let’s all agree that we are ultimately called to Love. Can we love one another without having a head full of doctrine, theology, and religious affiliations?
Perhaps.

though I love hearing and discussing other theologies of different denominations.
TRULY I say to you all, that not one denomination contains the whole truth. (correct?)
It is BENEFICIAL for us all to really be OPEN to truth and always DISCERNING as well.
I just prefer the Catholic teachings because God speaks to me the best through this look on truth and Jesus Christ. But He also uses other denominations to speak different aspects of a central Truth, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior,

Nice try, Zerinus, but NOT convincing. You can keep trying but will never make it. I think you’ll have better luck trying to convince a Moslim than a TRUE Christian.
Well, a great many “true Christians” do become convinced. But we don’t convince them; the Holy Spirit convinces them. The mistake you seem to be making is that you are expecting a man to convince you, which no one can. If a religion (any religion) is true, then God will manifest Himself in it. That is how we can know.

Zundrah: Does this mean you will not go with the Mormons? Please say you will not. I really have a bad feeling about this.

Christian55
Christian55, I tried to private mail you but I can’t because you are a new member just now. Please, rest assured I **will not **go with my mormon friend to her chruch on sunday, I never will becase your email to me made me realise that it would be far more dangerous to my faith then I expected otherwise why would the holy spirit be guiding you to help me and advise me not to!?

I will not go!

I just emailed mailed her and counciled our plan to go… She will get upset with me no doubt but hey, what kind of christian would get angry about that!? I have decided not to be so silly ever again.

I hope that this will bring you peace and know that your effort was not wasted at all! Thakn you so much for your advise, it was not in vain! 😃
