Again, this thread is on the future, not the past. No matter who was first to create a cart and put a log on it to bash down a door, or sharpen a stick to make a spear, we have to deal with Iran in 2006. Let’s stay on topic.

Gooood, does that mean that we’re not going to keep returning (“Returning” = look back at history) to 9/11 everytime we want to justify some warlike action? I must admit I’m waiting pensively to hear about how many Al Qiada camps are in Iran, how many of the 9/11 terrorists were trained in Iran, how the Iranian government has contributed towards AL Qiada etc. etc.

It is what you make it!smileys.smileycentral.com/cus/e_2_5.gif %between%

the number of innocents would be the only, ONLY, deterant.
Good point. Unlike our enemies, we care about innocents. In Iraq, we’ve gone out of our way not to hurt innocents, and more of our troops get hurt because of their desire not to hurt innocents. God bless our wonderful troops.

I’m not sure what the best route to take with Iran. But it’s certain that we cannot take a route that allows their terrorist government to obtain nuclear weapons.

I agree it started long before. It is 9/11 though where they opened pandora’s box so to speak–they awakened a slumbering giant.
I do agree that the current conflict started long before 9/11.

9/11 however was very much like opening Pandora’s box. Because it was the American people themselves who were hit in their own homeland. That was a mistake. Just as hitting England in her own homeland was a mistake. People who do not learn from history and instead try to rewrite it with rambling Fatwas are doomed to repeat it.

If 9/11 justifies war, then it justifies war. Saying it does not does not make your case.

Why should we repost information we have already posted? There is a search function at the top of your page and presumably you already have a Google button.

The danger here is not only al-Qaeda. The danger here is the government of Iran is set to distroy Israel and the US. That is what this is about. They may be protecting al-Qaeda, but that may be the least of our worries.

They are protecting those who would also destroy Israel and the US. I don’t see the distinction.

The bigger danger is they give al-Qaeda or Hezbullah WMD to play with.

Good Point,

The Iranian president is worse then 500 Osama’s. It’s a clear threat that needs to be removed. It realy won’t matter if we act or not because Israel will if we don’t. At which point we will be in anyways because it will be a regional conflict. In my opinion we should just do this and get it over with, it’s coming anyway. This is like watching WWE wrestling, it’s so obvious what is coming. Why dilly dally around with all of this negotiating that is auto rejected by this little Iranian dictator. Iraq and Iran with democracy verses dictators will encourage Islamic liberality so I am all for it.

Attack Iran? We’re Ready
Global strike differs from other existing war plans… in that it does not posit a U.S. response to invasion. That would be a defensive U.S. response. Instead, global strike constitutes a bolt-out-of-the-blue attack, a capability that has been developed wherein the President could order an attack within hours…

In May, I wrote that the plan also includes options to use nuclear weapons. But the attractiveness and feasibility of the new global strike planning is that a disarming blow can theoretically be delivered with conventional weapons alone…

If Iran continues to defy the international community and manufactures nuclear weapons materials, and if U.S. intelligence detects peculiar movements or actions associated with nuclear facilities or, say, Iranian arming and alerting of its ballistic missile or fighter force, CONPLAN 8022 could be implemented to strike at the activity.

Yep.

I wonder if knowledge and/or expectation of Israel’s response is what has kept our government’s profile low-key in this case.

I don’t know if Isreal has the capability to attack. But I think deplomacy will eventually fail and someone will make an attack on the nuclear production sites. After that, I don’t know what will happen.

Hard to say…the same is mentioned in the article I posted:
However analysts say it would be hard for Israel to achieve similar success in Iran, which has learned from the Osirak attack.
Its nuclear sites are dispersed around the country and heavily protected.

I think if we get into this we will do a long bombing run like the first gulf war. We may or may not invade afterwards. Israel has a large capacity and a top end airforce. And substantial nukes.

Now, now…Israel may or may not have nukes - they won’t say. 😉 😃

Darrel,

Not sure if you are talking about attacking the nuke plants (which I wonder if Israel has the capacity to do unaided). That can be done without regime change.

Or you are talking about regime change, which might be able to be done without invading the country.

From what I understand we realy don’t have great intel on the location of there sites. So a full blown reduction of there military and feet on the ground may be required to do this along with removal of the leaders who aspire to the nuclear position. I hope it’s as simple as a few stealth bombers but I think they have some serious research sites hidden out there.

The problem is “we” don’t know how much intel we do have and, based on the issues with the intelligence we had in Iraq, who will trust its accuracy?

Not sure how good this media source is but have a look. This a bigger problem then just dropping a few bombs, although some of our bunker busters might do it. I didn’t know that Cheney gave Israel this sort of green light on a pre-emptive strike. I think we should avoid the potential regional escalation and be the pre-emptive hitter here.

There a number of dangers.
  1. That Iran will deploy missiles armed with nuclear warheads against Israel. That will create a regional war which will draw in at least the US.
  2. Iran has also spoken of 29 North American targets. It is possible that mini-nukes will be walked in by suicide bombers to these North American targets or floated in by fishing boat. It would not take much to open the Canadian border or the Mexican border to Al Queda ‘tourists.’
  3. Which leads us to Iran arming Al Queda suicide bombers with mini-nukes. That is a choatic situation.
  4. With Iran nuclearizing, other Middle East nations will want to keep up with the Jones’s or provide deterrants. The two most likely prospects so far are Syria and Saudi Arabia. With rhetoric rising, anybody’s finger could be the one to set off a nuclear cascade.
  5. Whatever happens, with even the suspicion of nukes being transported by truck, ship, railroad, trade as we know it would grind to a halt. Suffering would be widespread.
The gig’s up.
