We’re having a debate on homosexuality in another thread and I need to know if the Catechism, which implies being gay is a psychological problem is infallible or can it be in error?

The Catechism does not imply that homosexuality is a psychological problem. It suggests that it has a psychological origin. Various tendencies toward behaviors have psychological origins without being psychological problems.

Note: I am not suggesting that homosexuality is NOT a psychological problem. I state no opinion on that matter.

Yes, many psychologists (including pro-gay ones) think that psychology, not just biology and uterine environment, plays a role in the development of homosexuality.

The Catechism does not say “psychological problem.” The Church’s teaching on the immorality of homosexual acts is infallible.

"2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. "

As I said, I don’t know. I think it can be associated with psychological problems. But I don’t think it is always a psychological problem – or at least I’m not sure.
 
The term “psychological problem” is a bit ambiguous, perhaps.
 
It says the psychological genesis remains largely unexplained.
 
  1. So are you saying that the part of the Catechism that says what I said in post # 14 is true or untrue?
  2. And are you saying the Catechism may contain errors?
  3. If “yes” does the Church know this?

If I may jump in, Pope Benedict himself said that the Catechism’s statement on lying was not the settled view of the Church, and that a minority theological view of lying could still be held by Catholics. So the Catechism cannot be entirely infallible on all matters of faith and morals.
 
So The Catechism can contain error and Pope Benedict knows this?

That’s a melodramatic way of putting it. The Catechism is a SUMMARY of a tradition that is quite complicated. Every summary leaves complexities out.
 
  1. What I want to know, (and this is getting confusing), is this, does the Church believe that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice or caused by psychological reasons OR does She believe there could be genetic reasons, biological reasons or caused by something that happened in utero?
  2. And can the Catechism contain errors or is everything in it correct?
