I can’t remember who said this but I heard it on EWTN. I guess it meant, the Latin Rite and the Orthodox.

I still don’t get it. How can the Orthodox church still be in union with the CC if they do things differently? images.bravenet.com/common/images/smilies/11_confused.gif

I mean, I don’t want to sound disrespectful toward the Orthodox church but really, if you’re not 100% in union with the CC, then you might as well be not part of the True Church!

Could someone explain more on this?images.bravenet.com/common/images/smilies/10_confused.gifhttp://javascript: void(0);

Instead of Orthodox, I would suggest that the Eastern Rite Churches were meant as the other lung.

I believe it was JPII who said that West and East (which could mean Catholicism and Orthodoxy) were the two lungs.

The Eastern Orthodox (yes, Orthodox, not just the Eastern Catholic Churches) are “true particular Churches.” They have authentic teaching, true Apostolic succession, and valid Sacraments. Their spirituality differs from ours in the West in a way that reveals aspects of the divine in a way quite distinct from our Western rational approach to things. They are separated from the Latin Church by issues which do not touch the character of their identity as true Churches. They are our sister Churches and their ability to express the mysteries of the faith brings a richness without which we are all impoverished. Hence, the missing lung.

I do not know who first coined the phrase “breathe with both lungs” but Pope John Paul the Great certainly made it a widely known expression and made significant attempts to bring a closer fellowship between the East and West.

Peace be with you!

I think it’s been meant to mean both the Latin and Byzantine Rites and also the Catholic and Orthodox Churches (East and West). I would absolutely LOVE to see the reunion of these two Churches.

In Christ,

Amen to that 🙂

It was JPII who said it in Light of the East and it’s the Eastern Catholic and Latin (western) Catholic Churches that he speaks of. Not the Orthodox.

Even though we would love to see a reunification with the Orthodox Churches…they are still schismatics and are not in any way a left lung of the Catholic Church.

What the Pope is talking about is the Eastern Rite Churches in communion with Rome as one lung and the Western Rite Churches, of which there are several other than our Latin Rite as the other.

To place the Orthodox Churches as the other lung is wrong. They reject the authority of the Pope and are schismatics.

We should all pray for the reunification of Constantinople and Rome.

I went to a Divine Liturgy ast year. The priest made a special point to say durying his homily that we are not just a ‘different rite’ - we are our own, individual Church. Now I’m really confused…I thought the Byzantine Rite was just another rite of the Catholic Church…are you saying the Eastern Orthodox Church is actually a separate Church? Were these the guys at JPII’s funeral with the hats who incensed his casket?

The “Eastern Orthodox Church” is a seperated schismatic part of the Eastern Catholic Church. And yes, those who incensed JPII’s casket were of the Eastern Orthodox Schismatic Church. I guess this was allowed as an ecumenical gesture as JPII wanted to have them reuinited with Rome.

Which “Divine Liturgy” did you go to? Was it Orthodox or Byzantine Catholic?

If you look in the front cover of most missals, you see a statement about who can take communion in Catholic churches. Members of the Orthodox Churches are admitted to communion.

The Orthodox Churches (not just the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches) have the Apostolic Succession and valid teaching.

It is confusing because most Catholics have never been taught anything about the whole Catholic Church.

My understanding is that there are twenty four (24) Catholic Churches that make up the Catholic Communion of Churches, excluding the twenty one (21) Orthodox Churches. They celebrate and express their faith by using one of eight different Rites and celebrate the Divine Liturgy by using one of eight different Divine Liturgies.

The Eastern Orthodox Churches are every bit as schismatic as the Society of St. Pius the Tenth. In fact, even more so.
The SSPX at least accepts the doctrines of the Papacy (even though they disobeyed JPII), and the doctrines of the Filioque and the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God, and all of the ecumenical councils since 787 A.D. The Eastern Orthodox flatly reject all of these.

vern humphrey:
Members of the Orthodox Churches are admitted to communion (in a Catholic church).
Valid point, vern. Because of our shared apostolic succession and the common validity of our sacraments, the Catholic Church does (or would), in fact, admit members of the Orthodox Churches to communion. The “catch 22” here is that the Orthodox Churches prohibit their members from receiving communion in a Catholic Church. So even though the Catholic Church technically makes the Mystery of Holy Communion available to Orthodox faithful, you’ll not see them partaking - to do so on their part would violate the praxis of their own Church.

The term “the church must learn to breathe with both lungs” originated with the poet Vyacheslav Ivanov and derives from the worldview of Vladimir Soloviev. “Eastern Lung” has always referred to the entire east, Catholic and Orthodox and John Paul II did in fact use it in reference to Orthodoxy.

It is for this reason that the Russian Catholic church has steadfastly referred to itself as the Russian Orthodox church in communion with Rome, the goal being full union between two sister churches and not the subordination of one to the other.

Further, I quote a snippet from another post at CA:
His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas (Orthodox) recently made these comments to a very large crowd of Roman Catholics regarding his personal conversations with Pope John Paul II, " I will say to you what Pope John Paul II used to say to me on the occasions he greeted me; ‘Glory to Jesus Christ!’ ‘Slava Isusu Christu!’ “The very day I received the news of my elevation to the rank of Metropolitan, I was in Rome representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate at an important session. The Pope and other Roman Catholic leaders joined in applauding this news.” He continues to say; " During his papacy, our relationship improved significantly. The Pope spoke of the Churches of the East (Orthodox) and West being two “lungs” of one ‘body.’

This is not remotely true. Those gathered to incense and chant over John Paul the Great were patriarchs and bishops of the Eastern Rites in union with the Holy See. I’d be interested where you got the idea that they were the Orthodox not in communion.

Also, when John Paul spoke of the Church breathing with both lungs, he was NOT speaking of the Eastern Rites (they’re already "breathing"with us), but of the Orthodox, in each and every context (of speaking of the need for reunion or unity). I would challenge you to provide proof that he was speaking of the the Eastern Rites. There are folks who believe he SHOULDN’T have been speaking thusly, but I’ve never heard it asserted that he was, in fact, talking about anyone other than the Orthodox.

This is the list that I found of the Rites and Churches in union with the Pope. I didn’t count to see if there were 24 or not.

Correct. In addition to the rites they use, there is a preference to be regarded first as each one belonging to true particular churches but you are definitely right about this.
