I always find this interesting. The Catholic church’s definition of church is broad and practically all-encompassing, but when it comes to belonging to the “right” one, the definition becomes so specific it is ridiculous. So, which definition of church are we talking about here? Just so I’m clear.
Let’s see what we can agree upon.

The Church is the union of all baptised believers.

The Church is an institution founded by Christ to assist all men learn about the Good News.

The Church is one in doctrine

The Church is Apostolic in nature and history

The Church is holy: founded by Christ and Guided by the Holy Spirit.

The Church is catholic: universal for all men in all times.

Are these acceptable?

How about a gathering of those called out. Ekklesia.

Yes
The Church is an institution founded by Christ to assist all men learn about the Good News.
The church does not exist independent of believers. It is not an “institution” with a separate existence.
The Church is one in doctrine
I’d have several caveats with this. Paul said it was OK for there to be differences, even in seemingly faith-based issues such as what is appropriate to eat or drink, or what days are held holy, etc. If you simply mean, “one in doctrine” on the basics, or salvation issues, then I’d ask you to define the basics.
The Church is Apostolic in nature and history
This is vague enough to mean just about anything.
The Church is holy: founded by Christ and Guided by the Holy Spirit.
Yes

Depends on what you mean here. It has never reached all men in all times. It took 1500 years just to reach the New World. I’d revise this to say that its purpose is to become catholic and reach all men (The Great Commission).
Are these acceptable?
I’d actually add a few statements from scripture, in addition to defining the word as Sambos has done, as well as providing some prophecies regarding the church.

The church is the Bride of Christ.
The church is the Body of Christ.
Christ is the head of the body.

Depending on how you interpret them, some of your statements could be considered mutually exclusive. E.g., since I’m validly baptized, I’m a part of the church based on your first criteria, but since I don’t fit in with other doctrines of Catholics, I am not a part of the church. So, my question would be, are they all required?

Ok
The church does not exist independent of believers. It is not an “institution” with a separate existence.
Ok, if you mean that if there were no people, there is no Church. I would say that you are incorrect if you are saying that there should be no heirarchy or visible church on earth.

Can’t do it. There are no minor issues or basics. If there were, no one would ever leave.

Sorry. I used terms without defining them. It would mean that there is an episcopal system in place and that you had an unbroken line to the apostles.
ok

I would not argue against that.

Ok, but what does that mean?

It depends. If you are looking for what makes us part of the church, that is one thing. If you are looking for signs that you belong to the church as founded by CHrist that is another.

Hi all, I just got here.

First I’d like to say thanks to ricko and Amadeus for correcting those erroneous statements. (It really bugs me when people say there are 23 “rites” in the Catholic Church.)
The Catholic Church is a communion of 23 sui iuris Churches (particular Churches), East and West.

The West is represented by the Roman Catholic Church, or the Catholic Church of the Roman (or Latin) Rite. It is headed by the Pope as Bishop of Rome. More than 99% of all Catholics belong to this particular Church.
Not to quibble, but I believe it’s closer to 98%. 🙂

Precisely.
It is icrementalism. The story of cooking the frog slowly changing the water temperature little by littleso that you dont realize what is happening.
Interesting … that’s kind of how I view the history of the Episcopal Church (USA).

The catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Christ. The Roman Catholic church was NOT founded by Christ. One is an institution created by man and the other is not an institution and was founded by Christ.
To quote GKC “This is the proper thing for a Protestant to affirm. You will not be surprised that RCs have a different view of the matter.” (slightly modified)

So the choice left to someone who believes that the Catholic Church has added to much to stuff to the original faith is only left with the option to belong to a church NOT started by Christ?
I think you’re missing the context of Ralphinal’s statement. He was responding to your statement that “It’s dead. You get a new one.”

Those last 5 words are particularly interesting, at least at face value, because you’re not saying that the RCC is one particular branch of the Church which fell into schism and error (which is what the Eastern Orthodox claim). But rather that we need a new Church to replace the old one. Or something like that.

You are correct. If the Church founded by Jesus goofed up and no longer exists then you must find a new one that Jesus did not found.

There’s no need. There’s around 30,000 to choose from.

This is like asking when the Roman Empire started. It didn’t just pop into existence out of nowhere. It evolved. That’s the problem. The Roman Catholic church has evolved far beyond what it should have.
And who says? What did it evolve from?

It did not evolve. It developed.

From the acorn in 33AD or thereabouts, it is now a full blow tree.
Me thinks you would rather it remained an acorn.

The child grows into an adult. The person who remains a child forever means there is a retardation somewhere.

Hi **SIA, **

I am piggybacking on this one and would like a full reasoned and historically supported answer.
Read Scripture. Jesus founded the Church upon himself giving the Apostles the power to bind and loose which is illustrated well in the Acts of the Apostles. Nowhere does Jesus ever imply that his Church would be one descriminating and condescending institution which calls utter fabrications and actions to suit its wrongdoing leaders Oral Tradition and makes it and it’s leaders equal in authority to the Word of God. The proof is right there if you are willing to accept it.

Ok, let’s look at this claim.

Did the authority to bind and loose end when the last Apostle died?

No it didn’t, but the point here is about what exactly binding and loosing is. By the way, how are you doing? I haven’t talked with you in a while my friend.

Sorry. But you are obviously the one that needs to read Scripture a bit more closely.

Matthew 16:18 clearly states that Peter was the rock upon which Jesus built his church. Even Protestants have grudgingly come to agree on this.

And you are right, nowhere does Jesus ever imply that His Church would be one descriminationg condescending instition becuase IT ISN’T. It is Christ’s Church and does not desciminate. It is your ignorance of truth which makes you come up with this conclusion.

And I agree, the proof is there if you are willing to accept it. But sadly there is something that is blocking your vision from seeing the truth. GK Chesterton said it is pride.

Oh yes, don’t accept Chesterton’s word for is. Why should you? He converted to Catholicism.

No… The Roman Catholic Church was, as you say, invented by man… But which men? Actually the term was invented by the Anglican, as you should know. It was used in a derogatory remark. The actual way to identify what you are referring to as the “Roman Catholic Church” is most likely the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. The official name is not really official but it is known mostly as the Church of Christ or the Catholic Church. The word “Roman” really identifies all Catholics that are in union with the Bishop of Rome. You should already know this. I’ve gone through great lengths to learn this and have verified it over and over. As a former Catholic SIA you should already know this but maybe you’ve been gone too long. Thinking about swimming the Tiber back soon?😉

But this is the reason I hate the term “Roman” in Catholic Church. It offends me even though many Catholics use it unknowingly.

The bile, the anger, the hate !!! Holy Macaroni !!!

Look at the authority SIA has been given! Hallelujah! His word is infallible, he was there some 1900+ or - years ago and knows what Jesus wrote! Hallelujah!!

And I thought Jesus left the organization up to the men He choose. Silly me!

Didn’t I know that the Bible was dropped from the sky sui generis and it was meant to be a HOW TO BE A CHRISTIAN book!!??

I must have missed that memo from Luther, although we all got the one where he decided to create his own canon of Scripture.

SIA is full of AIR.

Shame on those scandalous allegations, tsk tsk

You make some good points.
