I heard Cindy Sheehan speak publicly at the University of Maryland last night. I was surpised from the very beginning to hear her talk about her son and his love of the Catholic faith. I had not known Cindy Sheehan and her son were Catholics.

I am new to this discussion group but I noticed a discussion thread about Cindy Sheehan began on September 26th and was closed the following day by the moderator. People here seemed to have some strong opinions about Mrs. Sheehan.

It is interesting that for whatever attention the media has given Cindy Sheehan, her own voice has been broadcast very little. Therefore, opinions of Cindy Sheehan are formed more from what others have said about her than from what Cindy Sheehan has said.

I am curious how many people here have actually heard her speak for any length of time?

Everyone, keep it polite, charitable and follow the guidelines (see below).

Many have heard Madame Sheehan speak…
Sometimes actions speak louder than words…
Casey Sheehan was a good man, and I’m sure his mother must miss him.

  1. Ms Sheehan has said quite a lot.
  2. I believe some of us formed our opinions based on Ms Sheehan’s actual words.

How about you, have you formed you opinions based on what you have personally heard Cindy Sheehan say? What have you ever heard Cindy Sheehan speak about for any length of time?

We have answered your questions.

Have you ever heard Cindy Sheehan speak for any length of time about anything?
I have heard mainly her stunt speech. Since I have a daughter in the Middle East right now I am not too keen on anything that causes our soldiers more harm. Yes I am biased. I am not in favor of anything that compromises our troops or our country.

I feel very much empathy for Mrs. Sheehan. I think she has said some very hateful things about our President, our country, you name it. She puts her foot in her mouth IMHO.

I know that she has speech writers when she formed Camp Casey in Texas. I have no doubt she might have given a good speech to your group. I just don’t like how she is going about her protest, for the above reasons I mentioned. I won’t be posting again because I do not feel the need to debate anyone about Mrs. Sheehan. I pray for her and for her son. I pray for our military. End of subject for me. I won’t be going to see her speak.

I believe that Cindy Sheehan’s position on America’s invasion of Iraq is pretty much the same as that of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. That carries a good deal of weight with me, but apparently not with a lot of my fellow American Catholics.

How do you prove that? Sheehan asks for immediate withdrawal of troops. can you show us your evidence that JP II and Benedict XVI has explicitly supported the same idea?

John Paul II cautioned the U.S. He wanted to make sure that all of our information was correct and that war was the last result. He never questioned our motives, just our decision.

Cindy Sheehan has constantly accused the administration of lying to got to war for oil.

John Paul II preached love. Cindy Sheehan preaches hate.

They have nothing in common.

Sorry I was so blunt about things, but that’s just how I see it 🙂

Let’s just all pray for Cindy and her son. She is hurting.
I wish her peace of mind and spirit that only Jesus can give her at this time.

Love amd peace

Are you saying that we are not entitled to form opinions on Cindy unless we have personally heard her speak? Her words (or those of her speech writers) are widely reported, which appears to be her intent in the first place. Do you not form opinions about public figures based on what they are reported to have said? Why are you implying that the rest of us have to personally hear her speak before we can have an opinion? Leaving the war out of it for a minute, her reported comments about the hurricanes (just a little wind and a little rain) spoke volumes about her intentions whether I personally heard them or not.

You have changed the subject from the truth. The previous statement was, “I believe that Cindy Sheehan’s position on America’s invasion of Iraq is pretty much the same as that of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.”

That statement is true.

Cindy Sheehan like the Pope questions the decision to go to war. Have you heard her speak?

I did not hear her say that. When did you hear her say that?

Clearly you have not heard the words of Cindy Sheehan. Can you provide quotes from Cindy Sheehan to support your statement that she preaches hate?

We should also pray that God provides us the grace to open our hearts to the truth. When we believe things that are false we distance ourselves from God the source of all truth.

I believe that your assessment of the positions of Cindy Sheehan, and the above mentioned Popes is quite accurate. Some may ask: “Why is this so?” In order to understand this we must further examine the Roman Catholic world view .

Roman Catholics are “process” Christians. They are constantly told how to do things in order to be pleasing to God. They are taught to view conversion as a process. They do not accept the finished work of Christ, completed, once for all, at Calvary. For the Roman Catholic, people are weakened by sin, not totally deficient in and of themselves. Catholics believe a person must achieve sanctification by “cooperation” with the grace of God. This is done through outward works of merit by which the person actually becomes objectively good and holy.

For the Catholic, it is not faith in Christ alone that saves, but an inner process that leads one to salvation. Catholics are told they must “offer it up,” or “give their lives to Christ.” Such an understanding is nonsensical to the Christian that understands that salvation in Christ is a free gift to which nothing can be added, plain and simple.

Cindy Sheehan, Edward M. Kennedy, the above mentioned Popes, etc., all follow this maxim. They all believe that by standing up against the War on Terror, they are doing something noble in the sight of God that will help them become objectively holy and hopefully merit eternal salvation. They are not trusting in Christ alone and His finished work on Calvary in behalf of all who would believe on Him.

The only way we can “be perfect” as our “Heavenly Father is perfect,” is to accept the perfection that is our Heavenly Father’s, that of Christ’s perfect sacrifice. Only then can we say, “I am a man in Christ. I do not sin. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things are new.”

Debunkerman, you keep bring up “Have you heard her speak?” Please refer to post 13 and answer the questions raised there.

What’s JP II’s view on America’s invasion of Iraq? It’s wrong for US to attack Iraq but should stay there until it’s stabilized. That’s the full view of him. don’t quote anything out of context.

No. I did not say that. You could read her words or you could have a popular uninformed or misinformed opinion.

If you ever heard her speak you would know she does not need a speech writer or any notes. Please provide evidence of these speech writers you imply exist. Please provide a list of the publications where Cindy Sheehan’s unedited words have been widely reported as you claim.

geezerbob:
Do you not form opinions about public figures based on what they are reported to have said?
No I do not, especially when something does not appear to be right (thousands of innocent people are being killed). Anyone who has been quoted in the press knows, what is reported is often very different from reality.

It is difficult to personally hear Cindy Sheehan speak in person. I was fortunate that I was near a place where I could hear her speak. We are blessed to live in the Internet age where the words of Cindy Sheehan are only a mouse click away. Her essays are at www.gsfp.org (Gold Star Families For Peace).

Someone wrote, “Cindy Sheehan has constantly accused the administration of lying to got (sic) to war for oil.” and they added, “Cindy Sheehan preaches hate.” We can easily verify if these statements are true or false by reading the essays of Cindy Sheehan online.

We should not place our faith in what we others tell us about Cindy Sheehan because that is not our religion. Our faith should be in God alone.
