Hello everyone,

I am having trouble with Catholicism. When I read up more and more about this denomination, I find it to be more of a set of rules that if are not followed condemn you to hell. When I speak to my peers about my beliefs, I find their questions intriguing and I cannot seem to back Catholicism up. I am firm in my belief of the Christian God being the only One and Jesus being the Son of God. However…

These are my questions based on the beliefs of Catholicism:
  1. How can our God be loving if he condemns all homosexuals (who carry out the act) to hell?
  2. Why did the Pope hide the actions of and protect those directly involved the sexual abuse of young boys? I am very sure that our God would not condone the actions of sexual abuse no matter who you are (correct?!), so why didn’t the Pope issue any punishment?
  3. My mother had a child out of wedlock, so why are we loving a God that will condemn my mother - who is a good woman - to hell?
  4. Why is the Catholic church telling me who I can marry (religion-wise)? Why would a God that loves me send me to hell for not obeying the rules such as those just stated previously?
  5. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
  6. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
I have always been a Catholic. In Sunday school, the God I was taught about was loving and did not send anyone to hell except people like murderers. As I’m growing up and reading more, I am seeing a different God, a God I should be fearful of with all these rules I must follow or expect to burn in hell and it leaves me questioning whether Catholicism is right?

First off, what is this “our God” business.

The answers you get here would be wide and varied, and I’m sure some would recommend you do a search for some of your questions.

However in this case, MHO is you should talk to your priest. Not just in a confessional either, I mean call him and make an appointment. Better to go straight to the source than an internet forum.

God bless you!

Hi Impossible

I’m not overly familiar with the sex-abuse scandals that have happened so I will let someone else address that question.
Other that that, the main theme you seem to want addressed is
“Why would a loving God condemn someone to hell?” I will try my best to help clear things up but, as Loozcannon says, talk to your priest. He will explain these things more clearly than is possible for any of us to do over the internet.

The answer might suprise you but its because he is a loving God that hell exists. God does not really condemn people to hell. People choose to go there themselves. Now that probably sounds like a silly response and a cop-out, but let me explain what I mean by this.

God created everyone with free will. He loves us and desires for us to love him back. That is what our earthly journey is all about. Will we respond to God’s love? God does not force us to love him. Now loving God is not merely telling him you love him, or feeling “love” for him (sometimes a lack of feeling actualy shows a spiritual maturity). Loving God means not sinning. It is about saying “not my will, but yours be done.” Loving God is sacrificing our desires. Isn’t love sacrifice in the end? God sacrifices himself in love for us. If we refuse to sacrifice our desires then we are rejecting his love as we refuse to love him back.

Heaven is complete and perfect union with God. We have union with him through love. If we don’t love him how can we be in Heaven when Heaven is lovign and being loved by him?

As well God has not condemned your mom for having a child out of wedlock. Your mother has commited a sin by having sex outside of marriage. However, if she repents, then she accepts God’s mercy and is trying again to love him. As well, having a child is not the sinful part- its the sex outside of marriage. The child itself is a blessing from God. In fact it is God bringing something good out of something wrong (sin).

I hope this answer is somewhat helpful to you. As well, pray that God may enlighten you that you may come to terms with these doubts and questions.

God Bless

We should do these one at a time.
  1. How can our God be loving if he condemns all homosexuals (who carry out the act) to hell?
God condemns to Hell only those people who in the end absolutely refuse to repent of their sins. Can be any serious sins. Can be any serious sexual sins. Lots of those are heterosexual acts. God isn’t singling homosexuals out. If I dishonor my marriage vows and sin, and I refuse to repent and then I die, I can be sent to Hell.

The fact that you are asking about one particular sin is indicative of a lack of understanding of sin, forgiveness, and punishment in general. All sin is bad, and all serious sin can got one sent to hell, and ANYONE can repent of their sins and change their choices as to what they do in the future.

  5. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
  6. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
  1. He’s loving because, like the father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, He’ll always welcome us back. All we have to do is go to confession, and our sins will be forgiven. (Or in the case of venial sins, even just pray an Act of Contrition like we do at Mass every week)
  2. Not sure how to respond. But remember that those priests only seem like a majority because they’re some of the only ones to make it onto the news
  3. See #1
  4. IIRC, the only two rules with that are raise your kids Catholic and preferably marry one.
  5. No women clergy means we don’t think women are as important as men, you say… How do you explain the Hail Mary, Memorare, Hail Holy Queen, Rosary, Assumption, Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception…
  6. There can be salvation outside of the Catholic Church. And remember, God does love everyone. Remember the Parable of the Prodigal Son. He’s always happy to see us when we return

  1. Why did the Pope hide the actions of and protect those directly involved the sexual abuse of young boys? I am very sure that our God would not condone the actions of sexual abuse no matter who you are (correct?!), so why didn’t the Pope issue any punishment?
Because it’s the Bishops who discipline their priests canonically, and the court system who punishes offenders legally. The Pope disciplines the Bishops, and you might do a little research about what happened to Cardinal Law, who was forced to resign, made to testify to grand juries, and ‘deported’ back to Rome and a nothing job as titular head of a Basilica which amounted to being thrown under the Church where he couldn’t hurt anybody.

You might say “more punishment” if you want, but the Pope decided he simply wanted Law out of a position of power and publicly humiliated, and since the Mass. Attorney general said that the Cardinal hadn’t broken any laws, nobody here was going to put him in jail.

  1. My mother had a child out of wedlock, so why are we loving a God that will condemn my mother - who is a good woman - to hell?
That’s tons holier than aborting a baby. I was born out of wedlock, my mom endured tremendous suffering to allow me a chance at life. That’s penitential suffering, you might look it up. If your mom is going to Hell, it sure ain’t for carrying a child to term and giving birth. Rather, is any of us go to Hell, it will be because we won’t repent of our sins.

  1. Why is the Catholic church telling me who I can marry (religion-wise)?
You can marry a Vanic Pagan, an atheist, or a Snail Fondler, provided you demonstrate to the priest-witness that you understand exactly what you are getting into. The Bishop grants dispensations for disparity of cult provided you are prepared sufficiently so that the marriage is valid.

I don’t believe non-believers are going to hell. Imagine someone has never heard of Jesus. Or how about someone who has heard of Christianity but doesn’t have a proper understanding of it? Some people are born into families that practise a certain religion and naturally are inclined to believe it. Some genuinely believe that God cannot exist or that Christianity is wrong. In my earlier post I mentioned that responding to God’s love is what is critical. i don’t believe God expects someone who doesn’t know him to love him.

The problem is that some reject Catholicism because it teaches views that contradict their sinful choices. They don’t want to give up their sin so they reject the voice that tells them what they are doing is wrong. Think of how Herod’s wife had John the Baptist beheaded because he was condeming her sleeping with her husband’s brother. That is true rejection of God.

However every human has the capacity to know basic morality (i.e don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t lie, etc). This is of course assuming no mental impediment or a lack of ability to reason because of age. Every human has the capacity therefore, to reject God based on their actions. Again, if someone does something that is morally wrong but is ignorant that it is wrong, then they can’t have commited a sin.
I have always been a Catholic. In Sunday school, the God I was taught about was loving and did not send anyone to hell except people like murderers.
Why murderers? What makes them paticularly bad?

  1. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
You’re not. The holiest person ever born naturally is a woman, Mary. She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth. She outranks everybody else who isn’t God. Period.

Men are called to be priests, this is how God set it up, and we keep doing it that way. To say that this somehow demeans women is modern political ideology, and has nothing to do with actual Catholicism.

Being Catholic can feel like a handicap at times. I sort of agree with that. I’m single so the church sort of forgets I’m there. I get no support on any quarter. No groups no classes nothing but an alumni club that you have to pay to join and is mostly about happy hours and volleyball. No thanks. I can do that on my own time with other groups and avoid the air of desperation which seems to hang in theses groups.

  1. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
I’m a Catholic, and if I choose no to repent of my sins, I may go to Hell. And, yes, God loves me like He loves everyone. But, just like my parents punished me for my misbehavior, and the law will punish me for my crimes even though the judge does not hate me and may love me like a brother, God has created heaven for those who love Him and want to obey and serve Him. Nobody has to go to Heaven if loving and serving God is not their desire.

Re: #1 & 6 - God does not condemn anyone to hell. God does love everyone. We have free will to choose actions that will bring us closer to Him or those that deliberately separate us. God does not want anyone to go to hell nor does anyone in the Church. The Church is here to help bring people to God. Part of that is advising people what God has already revealed to us as the truth and what is ethical here on Earth. We would not be doing our job if we just said “do whatever makes you feel good”. It’s sort of like a parent who makes you eat your vegetables, I guess.

Re: #2 - The activities you discuss are considered 100% wrong and sinful in the eyes of Catholicism, including the cover-ups.

Re:#3 - Your mother is not condemned to hell!! This is absolutely not a Catholic belief.

Re:#4 - The Church doesn’t say who you can marry. You and your spouse are the ones who marry each other. The “rules” you might encounter exist because different faiths have different understandings of the nature of marriage. If the Church is going to administer the sacrament of marriage, it only makes sense that the marriage be Catholic in nature.

Re:#5 - Women and men are equal in Catholicism. The issue of women in the priesthood is much larger than can be answered in my quick response here.

God loves everyone and He calls us to love Him too. And He tells us exactly how to do this. It’s up to us if we want to accept His love and follow His commands. I’m not sure what Sunday school you went to but I’ve never been told that everyone but murders go to heaven. If someone told you that, they were mistaken. The Bible tells us that the path to Heaven is narrow but the path to destruction is wide. Read Matthew 7:13 and Matthew 7:22. Only those that do the will of the Father will enter into Heaven.

We have to stop looking for what we think sounds good and what we think would be nice and loving. Instead we need to seek truth – God’s love and strive to conform our hearts to that love. We have many tools to do this and the church provides these tools.

Having sex outside of marriage is not condemned because God doesn’t love us. It’s condemned because the act itself takes us away from God’s love. We do this to ourselves. God loves us and he wants us to be with Him. He wants us to follow his commands so that we can experience true love. Love is not subjective. Many people think that it is and spend their lives meandering. God is love. He created us as man and woman so that we might find love that is his likeness. Homosexual acts are completely contrary to this design that brings us to God. Such acts take us away from God. He doesn’t want that for us because he loves us and he wants us to know Him so that we may do his will and have eternal life.

Find the meaning of life and you will find that the pillar and foundation of truth – the Catholic church.

Your concerns come from a lack of understanding of your faith, and of God Himself. God is not Barney the dinosaur. God is loving, but God is Just. He rewards and penalizes, according to our thoughts and deeds. Please get a copy of Catholicism for Dummies and read it. It is an excellent resource that you can rely upon for years to come.

Don’t take this as being flip, but try reading some better and more informed books about the CC. Don’t assume you know everything. 2000 years of history is a lot wisdom.

  1. How can our God be loving if he condemns all homosexuals (who carry out the act) to hell?
We don’t know that they’re “condemned to hell”. We can only say that active participation in the homosexual lifestyle is gravely disordered (which makes it potentially a mortal sin to engage in). HOWEVER, in order for something to be a mortal sin, it must also include knowledge that such an action is grave and the choice to carry out the action made with free will.

The question of whether or not one goes to hell is a question of worth. Is union with God WORTH forsaking our sins? If we value our sins and cling to them over choosing God and forsaking our sins, then going to hell is OUR fault for choosing something over God.
  1. Why did the Pope hide the actions of and protect those directly involved the sexual abuse of young boys? I am very sure that our God would not condone the actions of sexual abuse no matter who you are (correct?!), so why didn’t the Pope issue any punishment?
To part 1, the pope didn’t hide anything and there hasn’t been a valid shred of evidence to that effect.

To part 2: with what authority would the pope “punish” someone? How would the pope in the Vatican justify his legal authority in the United States to punish priests who are US citizens? The punishment available to the pope is to defrock those priests, and this was done in several cases.
  1. My mother had a child out of wedlock, so why are we loving a God that will condemn my mother - who is a good woman - to hell?
What about the loving God who offered redemption for our sins by dying on a cross for us? If your mother confessed her sins, and received absolution, then she’s saved.

Catholicism is not about a one-and-done kind of deal. It isn’t that if you commit a mortal sin you are instantly doomed to hell. When we repent, receive absolution, and return to the communion of the church we are restored to the life of faith. We are in the process of being made more Godly.
  1. Why is the Catholic church telling me who I can marry (religion-wise)? Why would a God that loves me send me to hell for not obeying the rules such as those just stated previously?
Who in the world told you that you can’t marry someone? I mean, sure, statistically marrying outside of your faith makes your marriage less likely to last, but the church still allows interfaith marriage all the same.
  1. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
I think you mean why are you a part of the church, which recognizes that women and men are not the same thing. There is nothing in the catholic church which states that women are not equal to men. They are, however, mothers/sisters (nuns) and not fathers/brothers (priests/monks). Their commensurate roles, accordingly, are equal but in different areas of the Holy Family of the faith.
  1. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
God desires all people be saved… but there’s a slight crucial part in there: they have to desire to be saved too. For those who have no chance to realistically accept God, we trust that their invincible ignorance is credited to them and that God treats them with both mercy and justice.

But for those who ardently reject God, that is their right and God gives it to them.
I have always been a Catholic. In Sunday school, the God I was taught about was loving and did not send anyone to hell except people like murderers.
Really? What about the homewrecking adulterer and the massive damage they do to their families, particularly their children? What about the theif who deprives an old woman of her grocery money for the week? What about the person who utterly rejects God, despite the fact that God created that person AND died for them?

You see, morality is not just about “rules for the individual”… morality is also about crafting the communion of the church… making it into ONE Body. And that cannot happen when some people are like cancer to the body and the work that they do is to destroy the unity of the faithful and tear apart lives, even in small ways.

Thus the morality of the faith is about forming us into a more perfect union together with Christ. It doesn’t take murder or rape to be an evil person… it takes a lack of love and utter disregard for the dignity of our fellow man (and likewise a lack of love and respect for the adoration due to God). That’s it.
As I’m growing up and reading more, I am seeing a different God, a God I should be fearful of with all these rules I must follow or expect to burn in hell and it leaves me questioning whether Catholicism is right?
Let me pitch something to you: is anything you just said evidence that Catholicism is wrong… or is it more just that you find some things hard to stomach? Catholicism is about changing the self towards a more Christlike way. Sure, it is a spiritual journey on which we are all at different points on our own path… but at the same time, it demands us to subvert our own selfish understanding of morality in favor of one which is universally promulgated as virtuous towards and for all of mankind.

So what about any of the above leads you to believe that the Catholic church is wrong, other than you have a “gut feeling” that you don’t like portions of it?

Dear Impossible…
It appears that you have been very poorly Catechized…not really surprising since catechesis hasn’t been the best for a while (thankfully I think it is getting better now that we have the Catechism available…

Asking a lot of questions in a single post is not the best bet…In fact I think technically it is against the rules…but we’ll try to give you some good information and if you need more detail, it is best to start a thread on each question.
First of all. Catholicism is not a “denomination” it is the original and most fully Christian Church.

Second…When one finds the Church to be a “set of rules” it is because they have not recognized that the rules all stem from a single source. The source that you allude to here…God is Love. So the rules stem from Love.
This can take some time to integrate so please be patient with yourself and keep praying on the matter.
  1. How can our God be loving if he condemns all homosexuals (who carry out the act) to hell?
  2. My mother had a child out of wedlock, so why are we loving a God that will condemn my mother - who is a good woman - to hell?
  3. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
These three questions basically all go together.
Those condemned to hell are unrepentant sinners. Determining who is a sinner, and how severe the sin is, can vary from case to case…So we really try not to make blanket statements that this or that “group” is going to hell.

I’m sure you’ll get a lot of answers on the specific questions above…but try to integrate them in this way…That the core reason someone goest o Hell is for violating the first and greatest commandment. To Love God with all your heart, mind, and strength. (Mt 22:36-40)
  1. Why did the Pope hide the actions of and protect those directly involved the sexual abuse of young boys? I am very sure that our God would not condone the actions of sexual abuse no matter who you are (correct?!), so why didn’t the Pope issue any punishment?
None of are really in a position to know what was done, by whom, when…You have to remember that these things occurred over many decades and were mostly handled at the diocesan level - not the Vatican. Also, diagnosis and treatment of the problem also evolved. So there really isn’t a simple blanket answer to this one.
  1. Why is the Catholic church telling me who I can marry (religion-wise)? Why would a God that loves me send me to hell for not obeying the rules such as those just stated previously?
So far as I know the Church does not forbid us marrying whom we wish…within reason…
As for sending one to hell for not obeying the rules…
I ask you this. Do you Love God above all else? Do You??? If you Love someone with your whole heart mind and strength…don’t you want to please them???
Then why would you balk at obeying His rules?
And if you break a rule, why would you hesitate to come running back, apologizing and promising to do better?

See what I mean about all stemming from Love?
You are here asking these questions - “Why doesn’t God Love…” - - - I think it is more important for us to ask, “Why don’t we Love God and Love Him as He asks and deserves”?

I don’t say this as an attack on you…I struggle with this constantly as does everyone else here.
But before we accuse God of not loving us enough…We better look at if we Love Him enough…
  1. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
If, as you say, you are Catholic, then you DON’T belong to a Church that bans women from being equal to men.
Yes - you are growing older…and as part of that you are expected to learn the deeper truths of the faith. Yes God is Love (1 John 4:7-8) and it is easy to point to certain things (like Murderers) as worthy of hell, while other things are more difficult.
Keep praying, reading and asking questions. Listen carefully to the answers and all will be well.

Lastly - someone mentioned talking with your priest…I think this is an excellent Idea.

Peace
James

  1. Why am I part of a denomination that bans women from being equal to men?
What are you talking about?? the priesthood - when Jesus instuted the priesthood (at the Last supper when he also instituted the Eucharist) he chose only men, we are following his example. Think about it, why didn’t he make Mary his mother a priest - who better than her to lead us to Christ , but he did not make her a priest nor any other female

second look at all the female saints Catholic Christianity has produced, Blandina, St Joan of Arc, Mother Theresa - thats just off the top of my head - so you question is stated completely wrong you need to do some homework
  1. Why doesn’t God love everyone? He sure does not love non-believers as it seems like they are going to hell too.
God Loves everyone, all of us, but its up to us to love him back

show me one line out of the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the bible that says God does not love non-believers

you sure your reading the bible and not the Quran???

I have always been a Catholic. In Sunday school, the God I was taught about was loving and did not send anyone to hell except people like murderers. your looking at all wrong kid, first look at what the Catholic Church said about hell and how you can get there, second look at the history of the Church and study it because then and only then with study will you come to find the Catholic Church is the one true church - you can see it the bible and the writings of the first Christians.
