What does one say to protestants who keep insisting that the Catholic Church began at the time of Constatine?

I refer them to the writings of the ECF’s.

Then I tell them that they have been taught falsely.

Perhaps 1 in a thousand will actually read from the ECFs.

Well if thats all they say then you don’t say anything back… they can’t just make a wild claim and expect people to believe it…

If they say that and they back it up with something substantial then you show them where they went wrong…

If they continue for no particular reason, you just put them on your ignore list…lol 😃

you challenge them since they undoubtedly call themselves bible Christians, to actually crack open the book and read it, every word of the NT, particularly the Gospels and Acts, for the numerous references to Jesus Christ–who did found the Church–his apostles, and His Church.

If the Catholic Church only began at the time of Constantine then all of the supposed errors of the Catholic Church would only have emerged after A.D 300, or even 337 - when Constantine died. If that is the marker for when the Christian Church fell into error, then how can they trust the very Bible they put their faith in, since the canon of Scripture was not settled upon until about fifty years after the death of Constantine (at the Councils of Carthage and Hippo). I agree with other posters who suggest that the objectors read the writings of the Church Fathers. If they are really interested in the truth, they will see that Catholic practices and beliefs - such as the Eucharist, confession to a priest, papacy, etc - existed long before Constantine.

I guess I would ask him what he means by that. What does he mean by started? The Church has constantly been evolving over the years, though the faith has remained unchanging.

Tell them they don’t know their history. Tell them the Truth. Say, "St Ignatius of Antioch, born in 50 A.D., taught by the Apostles St. Peter and St. John, Bishop of Antioch and the Martyr to be fed to the wild beasts in the Collesium, said ‘Whereever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church’ ".

Thats almost 300 years before Constantine was emperor.

I tend to agree with this. But if you really want a response, you can refer them to Ignatius’ words someone else quoted here. I also like to expound on the development of the papacy. You can read St. Irenaeus’ *Against Heresies *(ca 170 AD) in which he expounded on apostolic succession, with “pre-eminent authority” at Rome. In other words, he pointed out that only the Catholic Church had valid apostolic succession. You could also point out the issues in which the Pope’s final word won the day with regard to Pope Victor’s call for Sunday worship (ca 190 AD) or Pope Stephen (ca. 256 AD), regarding so-called heretical baptism. Or you can look at the Church’s unanimous acceptance of infant baptism or the Real Presence in the Eucharist. So many ways can this be approached. It’s almost too easy. :o

The church was nothing but Essenic Jews?

Seriously, Baptists? John the Baptist was an essene. A sect of Judaism. Baptists are Protestants of the Calvin line. How can a Protestant Church exist before the Catholic Church?

I am confused. I do not udnerstand this comment. John the Baptist died before Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross (He died before the ministry of Christ, too). Therfore, John could not have preached a gospel since it had not occurred.

allischalmers - may you please explain what you wrote?

Thank you.

I think maybe he wrote this line to distract us from the real topic of this thread.

Peace!

Allischalmers is wrong.

Matthew 14:1-12
1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. 6On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much 7that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10and had John beheaded in the prison. 11His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

John the Baptist never established a Church nor led one. He had been killed before Jesus established the Church on Peter.
However, we would all be interested in your documentary source for this assertion.

I guess Allischalmers is unable to defend his/her statement as he/she seems to have gone quiet!

I have not yet seen al chalmers carry on any real converstations. All I’ve seen is posting false one line preposterous claims with no basis whatsoever. Never answers questions about these false claims and is utterly unable to defend them.
