I’m not saying the teachings you guys are using are medieval. I’m talking about using veiled or otherwise explicit references to hell isn’t helpful.

Using fear and intimidation does not lead to enlightenment. These were often used in the past and is one of the things that we need to improve upon. One can teach without using this kind of methodology.

Much of the past centuries is and was holy. More reverence, spirit of sacrafice, modesty, but use of fear and threats was not a gem of the period.

Saying that using birth control, condoms, and such is a grave sin is fine but waggiling the finger and saying “you don’t want to burn in hell do you?” isn’t helpful.
Agreed. As long as you agree it’s grave sin. 😉 (and I never use the “h” word) 😃

Actually NFP doesn’t work because my wife has irregular periods. Her doctor tells us it wouldn’t work either and she is Catholic. Even if it did work my wife says it’s too much work. My wife, however, has high prolactin levels and is 37 so hopefully that will work in our favor. Our only child, DD, didn’t come easily

I don’t even use the withdrawl method as that’s not permitted either. I guess it’s up to God. The decision has been taken away from us. I completely and utterly disagree with these folks saying that Catholics are supposed to have more choldren baring “grave” reasons otherwise, whatever grave is.

I’ve never met a priest that says this though they do teach NFP.

I’ll be obedien. It’s what I have to do. . . .
Serious reasons are required to make use of NFP to avoid…but these do not need to be “life or death” …the Church generally uses the word “serious” in all her recent documents not “grave” …

Serious reasons are not limited to financial …medical …etc there can be all sorts …life can be full of varied reasons.

This is actually the teaching of the Church not the matter of opinion of some Catholics.

(though some Catholics may have a rather severe understanding of “serious” as their “opinion” on the matter…)

See for example the Compendium of the Catechism which was issued around 5 or so years ago by Pope Benedict XVI

I will quote from it here:
  1. When is it moral to regulate births?
2368-2369
2399

The regulation of births, which is an aspect of responsible fatherhood and motherhood, is objectively morally acceptable when it is pursued by the spouses without external pressure; when it is practiced not out of selfishness but for serious reasons; and with methods that conform to the objective criteria of morality, that is, periodic continence and use of the infertile periods.

As for the irregular periods…actually one should contact the Paul VI Institute…they can help her! 🙂 Their NFP method is like no other! They are “the experts” beyond many others. popepaulvi.com/education.htm

They really can help…and they have docs all around the country trained by them…and one can do a review with their Dr. Hildgers who has been on Catholic Answers show…look it up 👍

Speaking of Hell, I actually once had another member here on CAF flat out tell me I was going to Hell for saying I wear shorts and tank tops on hot days. 🙂

Lol her words exactly were “If you think it’s too hot in Florida, what do you think Hell will be like??”

That was a classic. 😉

She is probably worried about your soul.

Maybe she should be worried about her own.
What makes you think she isn’t? I mean, it’s not an either-or thing, “Either she is worried about somebody else, OR she is worried about herself, she can’t be both”. . .🙂 Sure she can be worried about herself and another!

I know it’s the typical reaction to criticism to immediately posit that the criticizer should be going after the ‘plank’ in his or her eye, but as I said on another post, there has to be SOME way that a person can make a statement of fact and not be labeled as either ‘judgmental’ if the statement upholds the rules and annoys somebody who isn’t following those rules, or labeled as ‘heterodox’ if the statement doesn’t ‘jibe’ 100% with somebody who is following A set of rules which might not even be authentic Catholic teaching in the first place. . .

Let me just say that “Admonish the Sinner” seems to be the favorite Spiritual Act of Mercy for some folks around here.

I think telling someone else that they will go to hell is a little bit overboard. Especially for wearing shorts, haha.

I also think it’s downright rude and very reminiscent of spiritual pride. 🙂

Just my opinion though!

Anyways… let’s get back on topic… 😉

Cheesehead, (haha, cheesehead??)

You have always been very kind to me. I remember our PM conversations a few months ago and you really reached out to me.

I know for a fact that you are being genuine with your intention, and that you truly care. I appreciate that very much.

It is nice knowing that I have people like you who I can reach out to for guidance if I ever feel God is calling me to change my views on contraception. I thank you very much for that, as it means a lot to me. God bless, brother. :hug3:
No problem, sister. I hope you were able to consider some of my points along with the kind words 👍

Because nobody else was respectful and genuine, they were only concerned for your soul.
Mmmmm, NOPE! 🙂

Sorry.

Someone who is genuinely concerned for my soul is not going to call me names and make false assumptions and false accusations of me. 👍

Any intelligent human being knows that doing so will not lead anyone closer to Jesus Christ, our Lord.

…And as this thread doesn’t contain any stupid people, I’d have to conclude that for them, it was probably more about spiritual pride and a sense of self righteousness than about genuine concern for my soul.

I’m sure everyone in this thread is an intelligent person. 👍

Seems to me as though someone who is going around being disrespectful and un genuine, should be concerned for their own poor souls. :signofcross:
