Excuse me, but this is Catholic Answers. If you don’t want Catholic responses you shouldn’t have come to a Catholic website. No one is excluded from the NCF–not even Catholics. LOL!

The Sacred Traditions of the Catholic Church are both oral and written. The Bible is a part of Sacred Tradition, not the basis for it. That you don’t know this coming onto a Catholic website shows you have been used to dealing primarily with Protestants or uninformed Catholics. If you want to know what the Catholic understanding of Jesus vis a vis Sacred Scripture you only have to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The text, with a search function, is readily available online.

No, I won’t be getting negative responses from other Catholics because what I’ve told you is the plain facts. The Catholic Church is not founded on the Bible. It’s authority to preach and teach was given to it by Jesus Christ not by the NT, which wasn’t written for several years and not finally compiled for centuries.
Wow! I did not know that there was another kind of Literature in the Catholic Church which speaks of Jesus. I thought the NT was the only thing we had about Jesus. It might be interesting to know more about this. If the authority to preach was given to the Church by Jesus and not by the NT. What do you have as an evidence of what you say?

**Jewish-Christian scholars! But of course! Hyphenated Jews. They are worse than Christians without Jewish background. Usually, these Christians converts from Judaism are the worst kind of fundamentalists to deal with. You should not regard them too high in honor because they are very unfair to Christianity. They accept the things of Christianity and deny Christians the credit that is due them. **
The more you make statements like this the less credible you are. I’ll take the likes of Dr Arnold Fruchenbaum’s word over your word any day of the week. As I said, you don’t seem you can be reasoned with and now it’s apparent you’re not able to be reasoned with because you’re unreasonable. Sorry to be so blunt but I don’t see any other way to answer you.

Well from my hyphonated point of reference, Ben sounds more like a disgruntled Worldwide Church of God, refugee. The only thing missing is the inclusion of England, and the stone of scone, otherwise there seems to be lots of Herbert Armstrong and his fellow travellers in your messages. I’d take what Ben writes about what Jews believe with a pillar of salt. I was raised in a very observant Sephardic home. Grandfather was a rabbi, and scholar. I also made the rounds of Azkenazi shuls and heard a far different understanding there from what Ben writes.

Remind me Ben, Since I don’t have a photographic memory. I seem to recall somewhere that you are a convert to Judaism, or a quasi Jewish sect that presents a different slant on Jewish thinking than the rest of us were taught. I could be wrong, (I was once :p) But somewehre in the foggy past, I think you tipped your hand, and disclosed your past.

The writings of the Early Church Fathers and other works, such as the Didache. The NT is not the only document that affirms what we know and believe about Christ.

Let’s not forget that Josephus also mentioned the early Christians and the historical Jesus. Although Ben’s skewed history would discount Josephus, (when he does not support the mythic history Ben gives us) as a Hellenized Jew.

Yes there were many schools among Jews. My own family as mentioned above being Sephardic, had different cultural interpretations of Halkalah, while still being as Jewish as Eastern European Jews. As a matter of fact, the Jews of Eastern Europe used to seek answers to difficult questions from the Rabbis of Sepharad, (Spain) prior to 1492.

I hesitated to mention Josephus because he doesn’t give evidence of Jesus’ resurrection–at least I don’t think he does. I’m not all that familiar with his writings except what I’ve read here about them.

Oh yes. In Jesus’ day there were various faction–and they all lived with each other. Judaism doesn’t speak with a united voice. The Seat of Moses passed to Jesus and he passed it on to his Apostles, although I wouldn’t expect non-Catholic Jews to accept that.

Why don’t you read I Kings 18:23,40? Prophet Elijah had also his hyphenated Jews at his time. They were called “Jews-for-Baal.” They would practice pagan rituals and insist on being identified as Jews. Elijah said they would straddle the issue, without a decision to follow only our God or only Baal. They would insist on staying in between: Following Baal while holding the identity of the real Jews who would follow only God. Elijah lost his patience and slit the throats of 850 of them. At least, I behave a little more civilized than Elijah by agreeing to dialogue with them. Have I rebuilt back my credibility?

**At least, about something in this post of yours, you said all: You don’t have a photographic memory. Otherwise, you would not have forgotten the stock where we have come from. It is deplorable for lack of a better word.

Have you ever heard about the Rambam? My grandparents came from his homeland of Cordova in Spain. I am not a convert but a Baal Tshuvah. However, I bet much more on those who convert to Judaism than on those who are allegedly born Jewish and lose their Jewishness for their lack of knowledge, according to Hosea 4:6.**

I think you are only ruminating on food already chewed by Hellenistic jaws.

Several Scholars assert that prior to the 4th Century, no one had ever heard of a quotation from Josephus about Jesus or Christians from the time of Paul. Afterwards, he started being quoted. I wonder why! Then, I found out that pious forgery was an allowance by the Church, as long as it contributed to the common good of the Church. Then, exaggerations became the order of the day. In the name of Piety one could interpolate any kind of forgery. Therefore, not only Josephus but also Philo were out confirming for those who had a more restless mind, that Christianity was here to stay.

As I wrote, I know little about Josephus except that he gave into the Romans and bowed before them instead of being killed at Masada. His “history” is taken with a grain of salt by all good scholars, be they Catholic or secular.

Your claims about pious forgeries is pure calumny not fact. I don’t know what “scholars” you are referring to, but they sound like people with an agenda not those who have any real knowledge of how the Church determines what is/isn’t to be used as aids to faith.

When it comes to matters of doctrine the Church is very careful what it declares must be believed. It investigates such things over decades/centuries. It never accepts writings as authentic unless they’ve been proved to be so. Popular piety is another matter, still it must not contradict doctrine/dogma. You should take note that not all writings from the 1st/2nd centuries are included in the NT. All such writings underwent intense scrutiny and had to meet very strict criteria. If what you say was true, the NT would be filled with such works, but it isn’t.

That is not what these scholars say.
Now, there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works—a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.[37]
The text is obviously an amazing confirmation from a Jewish contemporary of the apostles, who was not a Christian, but still confirms Jesus as the Messiah (the Christ) and the resurrection. However, it is too good to be true. It is just unlikely that a man like Josephus (not a Christian) would write this about Jesus. Therefore the vast majority of scholars agree that the basis of the text is genuine and originally from Josephus, but that likely over the centuries Christian sources have added the statements about Christ and the resurrection. The text accepted as original is underlined in the above quotation, and it still confirms that:
Code:
* Jesus was a wise man, a teacher and a “doer of wonderful works”.
* Jesus attracted both Jews and Gentiles to be His followers.
* He was condemned to the cross by Pilate at suggestion of the Jews.
* His followers are now called Christians and they are “not extinct at this day”.
The Scholars do not dispute that Josephus wrote of Jesus and the Christians only that there were suspected additions.

Yes, you are right. When something is too good to be true, it’s because it is definitely not true.

You do realize that this came from a web site that I linked?

You state without proof that Josephus never mentioned Jesus or Christians. You are mistaken. He mentioned both. Sorry if you don’t like it but thats the facts.

It is too frustrating to have a religious conversation with Catholics who are too framed by Church authority. The bandages are so narrow at their eyes that they become unable to see beyond the length of their nose.

Yet you continue to come here attack, belittle and slander Catholics. Moreso Jews who after study and prayer have decided that they can only be good Jews by converting to Catholicism.

Why cause yourself such tsorus?

As to your mishigosh, asking me if I have ever heard of Rambam. What observant and well read Jew has not? Most of all as I mentioned I was raised in a Sephari home. The only thing you are accomplishing is the destruction of good faith between Christians and Jews. By who’s authority do you speak? You hurl accusations and when asked don’t supply references. Several times when you have attacked Catholic teachings that you know little of, you come back suprised that the Catholic Church does not teach what the Evangelical Protestants do. I’d suggest that you don’t just copy and post the attacks your un-named sources have provided you, but that you investigate what those you attack really do believe first.

**Stop the cop-out once and for all! You are not Jewish. What do you think, that to be Jewish is to belong to a different race? If you regret to have confessed your religious loyalty to another strange faith, just give up and return. This of following the rites of a strange religion and insisting with being identified as a Jew, you remind me of Elijah and the Jews-for-Baal who used to practice a pagan religion and to insist that they were still Jews. Ellijah said they were straddling the issue neither following the true God nor Paganism all the way. Therefore, he Elijah lost his patience and slit the throats of 850 of them. You are lucky that we don’t have Elijahs today. (I Kings 18:23,40)

If you want to be a Catholic be it at full and stop claiming you are Jewish, because you are no longer. There is more than one way for a Jew to lose his Jewishness. And you have lost yours.

Attack! Who is attacking here! This is not for me to attack. Attacks are what you guys are experts at. When someone started talking about being attacked it’s because he has run out of juicy. You have even lost that Jewish trait to hold a good and attractive discussion. **

If the Jewish people and the Catholics after them had always stuck themselves to God’s ways, maybe everything would have been so different!
As for seeing beyond the length of their noses, listening to the Church and recognize her authority given by God Himself is not the obstacle! Not listening to the Gospels and the Church enough and yielding to our own selfishness is the main obstacle.
You may follow your own interpretation of the Bible and still fall aside from God’s ways, you know…
To denounce an actual evil is very good, and yet one can be deceived into attributing it to the wrong target(s). Unfortunately, it has happened before and is still happening…

Y., this person has just told you he was raised a Sephardi. Why is it BTW that those Christians who were born Jews should be told they are not Jews anymore because they became Christians? It’s when the Nazarenes, who were called “Christians” after a number of years, were banned from the Temple and the synagogues, little by little and then officially, that they were cut off from the Jewish people.
Hasn’t the Jewish people a role which should lead to the redemption and the salvation of all those, Jews AND non-Jews, who renounced their sinful ways and were (are) determined to follow God’s?
