Hello!

I have a medal of St. Benedict that I have begun to wear, and recently asked a priest to bless it. Now, I read all the time, and in reading about the medal of St. Benedict (or any other sacramental really) everything has said that part of the blessing is sprinkling with holy water. The priest I asked did not use any holy water, however, and simply verbally blessed the medal, making the sign of the cross over it. Of course, I would never presume to correct a priest, but is the blessing still efficacious without that step? Help a convert out, and thanks!

With a lot of things it may not make a difference, but the St. Benedict medal has a blessing of its own. This page has information about the medal and the blessing: osb.org/gen/medal.html

Thanks. I may… discreetly take it to another priest and print that off to use. As a side note, holy crow, that site has a ton of free information!

I know that some sacramentals are blessed with water, but I know at every Easter Vigil I have been to, they ask everyone to raise any items they wish to have blessed. I have also witnessed Priests blessing items after Mass without the use of water.

The Vatican sells Rosaries by the truckload that has been blessed by the Pope. I suspect he does this in bulk, not one by one with holy water. I am sure both ways confer the blessings we seek!🙂

They do? I always thought that you cannot sell a blessed object and, if you do, it loses the blessing?

The Vatican does not sell rosaries blessed by the pope. One can find rosaries for sale in the Vatican gift shops, but there is no claim that they were blessed by the pope or any other cleric.

In Italy (especially near Vatican City) one will (inevitably) see many vendors selling rosaries. Some of them claim that the rosaries were blessed by the pope. I only write “claim” because there’s no way to prove or disprove such a thing.

At the end of a public audience, the Holy Father typically blesses all the objects that people bring with them and want to have blessed. Anyone can hold up rosaries, medals, crosses, etc. and have them blessed. The Holy Father does not use Holy Water when he does this. There is nothing stopping a vendor from holding up a large quantity of rosaries and then later selling them.

By the way, they are not all dishonest (there’s no need to be). Sometimes, if you ask “were they blessed?” the vendor will say “no” then tell you that after you buy them, you can have them blessed yourself.
