The Crystal Cathedral *will become* a CATHOLIC Cathedral

Dear friends,

There has been a lot of condemnation regarding the Diocese of Orange’s purchase of the Crystal Cathedral, much of it blatantly biased and ill-informed. Much condemnation was poured upon His Excellency Bishop Brown of Orange, my bishop and a man I esteem, as being ‘new age’ and even, yes, for some obscure reason, heterodox. Therefore it is to my great delight that I post a link to the Diocesan newspaper, Orange County Catholic.

As it turns out, the Crystal Cathedral WILL BECOME a Catholic Cathedral.

Here are some quotes from the story, which I hope can appease some who were actually furious over what most view as an awesome opportunity for the Faithful to evangelize Orange County, and for the Faithful to build up the Kingdom of God.

There is more, and it all points to the intense efforts which are underway even now to transform the Crystal Cathedral into a proper cathedral. It will not, I repeat, will not, be a Catholic-light Protestant Church as so many pundits have said. Praise God that He has seen fit to at long last give Orange County a magnificent capital for His Church!

When the Diocese of Orange won the bid for the Crystal Cathedral I made it a point of actually touring the campus. In reality the cathedral reminds me of a very neutral building. Almost like a sound stage that can be configured for whatever need is necessary.

I have absolutely no doubt that it will make a great Catholic cathedral.

The real value getting the entire campus for such a low price. It will do a wonderful job of serving the people. My only hope is that the remodeling no go overboard trying to turn structures into things they are not.

The Cathedral of our lady of Angles is a TERRIBLE church!!! A great example of how modernism has corrupted the reverency of church architecture. The Taj Mahoney is indeed a great name for it. I think the Diocese of Orange is going this direction with a modernist cathedral. Waita go Spirit of Vatican II you did it again

Have you ever actually attended a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels?

I suspect you have not.

I have attended many Masses there. I never realized the full potential of the edifice until I attended last year’s Easter Vigil Mass there. It was then that the design of that cathedral really made sense to me.

In brief, many cathedrals throughout the world do a pretty good job of putting themselves on display. On the other hand, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels does a good job of putting the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on display.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will never be a favorite of mine from architecturally aesthetic standpoint. It is however a favorite of mine in which to experience the Mass.
