The other day I went to an individual 's office to have some professional services done. I was told this person had a very bad mouth. This individual used his/her fowl tongue as a means of humor, all the while insulting her clients. While in her/his office I noticed he/she had some Catholic photographs up on her wall. One was of Christ, one of Mary and one of Padre Pio. I took his/her offensive tongue as a humorous and her way of “endearing” himself/herself to me. But the more I think of it, the more concerned I am. For this individual to have these Catholic images her/his office yet have such a fowl tongue causes me to pause. Christ said we shall give an account for every word we utter. What is going to happen to this individual at Judgement Day? I know it’s not for me to judge this person. However, I can’t help but wonder if his individual might have some demonic stronghold on her/his life. I really don’t know. But the more I think of it, the more this person needs my prayers. What do you think?

Well, clearly their fowl tongue is due to a poultry vocabulary. This person sounds like quite a turkey. I imagine that being there was quite unpheasant for you. I would duck and cover to get away from that sort of language. Do not let yourself quail - keep courage so that you do not chicken out of telling them what’s wrong with their behavior.

Sorry. I couldn’t help it. I’m a silly goose.

I’m trying to recall a verse that helped me in the past. It goes something like “From out of the heart, the tongue speaks.”, so if I found myself using bad language, then how much worse was my inner condition. The bad language is just a symptom of underlying spiritual disorder, though one must overcome the symptom in order to examine the cause. This is something one has to do for themselves. You can pray for this person, and you could perhaps send an anonymous letter to perhaps get them thinking about their language. Being directly and personally confrontational would probably be unwise.

Thanks for making my day, Sir. You’re one smart chicken, and you’re certainly no bird-brain! 🙂

I agree with the poster that said to send an anonymous letter. I would add some, or all, of these bible passages:

Colossians 3:8 - But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Matthew 15:10-11 - And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: (Read More…)

James 3:10 - Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Ephesians 5:4 - Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

Matthew 12:36-37 - But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. (Read More…)

James 3:6-8 - And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (Read More…)

2 Timothy 2:16 - But shun profane [and] vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Proverbs 21:23 - Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

James 3:11-13 - Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter? (Read More…)

Psalms 19:14 - Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Matthew 5:37 - But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

1 Corinthians 10:13 - There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].

Romans 12:21 - Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Luke 6:45 - A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech [be] alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

James 4:7 - Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Timothy 4:12 - Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

It could just be a bad habit , this cursing and swearing, and not so sinister after all. When I was a kid, our beloved old pastor was known let loose a few curse words now and then. Turns out he had been an army chaplain in WWII, and picked up the habit on the field of battle. Later, I worked in construction, where swearing and cursing is quite common, but usually only showed a lack of vocabulary or a desire to fit in with others who were swearing, more than any sort of evil intent. On the other hand, a lot of these same guys I worked with would never use such words around their wives and children, so it shows they could make the choice. As others have said, try to bring up your concern to your coworker with discretion. Maybe this person watches a lot of today’s movies, where swearing is so rampant, and doesn’t realize how offensive such cursing really is.

I think there is something inherently creepy in anonymous letters…so either have the courage of your convictions, or mind your own business…

👍 Excellent Scriptures, and very interesting as it just dawned on me that the evil referred to in some of them seems to be the human ego, which some call the “false self”.

Eggzactly! 😃

Beat me to it, but truthfully I could not have done as well.

Very clever and well done and very punny too! Love it!

Your post reminded me of a thread I started a few years back. I guess we both appreciate goofy humor and puns.

MainBrain, WetCatechumen offers great humor and good advice in his post. I agree with the advice (and I appreciate the humor too). 🙂 Gently tell the person that maybe she does not realize how much offensive words have crept into her speech, but that it seems to be a habit and it is distracting and makes communication difficult and it is just off-putting. I wouldn’t put it that way exactly, but I’d find a way to gently communicate that reality.

Praying for her is also good. Prayer is always the correct answer. 🙂

The only bad words to get offended at are “damn” in the proper context and anything taking God’s name in vain. You are offended by common “cuss words” because you think you should be, but you say their synonyms with no thought. I think the type of cussing he was doing says a lot.

I agree that there are differences among profanity, obscenity and cursing. But, none should occur in a professional setting. I think all are offensive and occur too much in general due to the coarsening of society. But, I do agree that it has unfortunately become quite common and everyday for people to utter expletives. It is a sad reflection on our culture.

I taught kids not to use foul language or cursing, and at first they would switch for example to “f that”, so the revised rule was “no alluding to foul language”. One day it dawned on me I was doing the same thing with “Gosh darn it.” and similar “light” forms of cursing.

…You are offended by common “cuss words” because you think you should be, but you say their synonyms with no thought. …
I am offended by vulgar language and I try to avoid coarse speech at all times if for no other reason than that someone who speaks in such a manner leaves a poor and unprofessional impression. Not everyone speaks so awfully as you imply.

I agree.

If I went to a professional office – or for that matter, if I went to a car mechanic or fast food place – and the staff was using obscenities, I would explain why I was leaving and then I would leave. There’s no need for that.

The OP also states that the “professional” insulted other clients. If he speaks badly to you about his other clients, he also speaks badly about you to them. Why would you want to do business with such a person? You are hiring this person to draw up your will or file your tax return or provide some other service for you. Is this really the best person to employ for the task?

It came to me this morning that the attitude of the heart is what is important. I should not be “ticked off” about anything even though that expression is not vulgar or alluding to vulgarity.
I should not say “This weather is rotten.” on a cold rainy day even though that is no curse. Instead I should go forth in praise and thanksgiving. If I find myself angry, frustrated, or melancholy, I should hold my tongue and examine my heart, and surely the condition of my heart even if disoriented does not give me the right to lash out at or in front of others.
